BEMER for stifle injury? What about pelvis injury?

I use the Respond pemf pad for my dogs. It’s made a remarkable difference on a dog with IVDD back pain and a dog with horrible hip dysplasia. My two older cats love it too. Highly recommend it’s worth every penny.

I don’t want to get on yet another mailing list - what’s the ballpark price on a Bemer, with the neck thingy?

The blanket and boots set is about $5500. The neck cover is an additional $2800. That’s for new, there are some FB groups out there where you can buy them used, but there are a fair amount of scammers.

The Respond brand is roughly the same price, then. I thought it was a knockoff brand!

My bemer w 2 boots was around 5k, I think. I don’t look into the price of the neck thing as I just hang the body piece over his neck.

I paid $5600 for a new BEMER Blanket and Cuffs in March last year.

The neck piece would be nice, but the cuffs can be rigged for the neck without trouble:

They can also hang off the back Velcro too if you want to target the stifle. I like their versatility.

If you don’t have the original receipt, Bemer won’t service your unit–so I have heard.

That’s why I went for buying new. The used ones I saw weren’t THAT great of a deal, and I’d rather know the hours I put on it and know it’s wear and tear history.

I have not had to service mine in 2.5 years, but eventually I will want them to replace the batteries, etc. I understand the service is very good. I also happen to know someone who got completely ripped off trying to buy a used one from a Facebook group. There is a very unsavory FB group run by a scam artist.

I guess since this thread has been revived, I should update a few things. Unfortunately two of the horses I was wanting alternative therapies for have had to be euthanized.

The old broodmare had so many issues that just became overwhelming and we think she had stomach cancer; she had lost an unreasonable amount of weight in a short amount of time and I couldn’t get it back on. Her Cushings was uncontrollable, and despite her being bright/happy/eating, I decided to let her go.

2 1/2 weeks later, the 8 year old with kissing spines was euthanized because we had discovered that his back wasn’t his problem at all. He had debilitating arthritis in his neck and had become neurological.

All the remaining are still alive and kicking (literally and figuratively).

I was seriously contemplating buying a Bemer a few months ago. I rented it for a week, along with two leg cuffs, to try before buying. I tried on the following creatures, with annotated results:

-Broodmare with broken pelvis. I used the blanket every day for a week, with cuffs rigged to sit on her stiffles. I was only able to see her once a day in the evenings, when I put the Bemer on her. I was told by my parents that she was walking much more close to normal the morning following Bemer treatment, but by the time I returned in the evening to treat her again, the effects had worn off and I saw no improvement. Effects assumed to last ~12 hours.

-Mid teens hunter that has the body of a middle-aged frat boy. I Bemered his whole body, including his neck but was unable to ride him that week to see if there was any difference.

-My dad who had recently blown out his knee (undiagnosed, but looked like considerable damage considering the swelling). The swelling would go down almost completely and pain completely gone. Effects would last 6-12 hours, then swelling and pain would return.

-Boyfriend (aforementioned friend) with back problems. I used the cuff on his back once a day. He saw some reduction in muscle tension that would last around 12 hours.

Now I do realize most of these have chronic or acute injuries and truly require more advanced treatment. But at this time, the Bemer was not a good choice for my current situation.

In contrast, the BF has gotten several days of relief from a Pulse machine and the mare with a broken pelvis walks straighter with lengthened hind quarters muscles for several weeks after a Pulse session. So I guess I should put that on the wish list of things. I’d rather Pulse the creatures once or twice a week and see some results/relief than to Bemer every day and only see results/relief for <12 hours.

I did get myself a hand held 3B cold laser. Obviously not a miracle worker but a pretty cool little device. I saw some expedited healing on a knee wound on my weanling. And the BF gets some instant relief (albeit relatively short term) from it when he has a lot of muscle tightness; less relief when the tension isn’t as bad.

So not overly conclusive. I do know the Bemer is not right for my current situation, Pulse machines seem to fit better but currently out of budget.

@BroncoMo I’m curious as to the Pulse you used… is it also pemf? Can you send me details about which one you used?

Curious here too!

@BroncoMo third vote for curious…hoping it’s a Magnawave. I’ve been down the rabbit hole this week on PEMF research papers on pubmed. Seems strong evidence that it performs well in non-human trials and outperforms placebo in humans for osteoarthritis.

Count me in as curious, too!

I’ve used two in the past but one more than the other. I’ve used both Magna Wave and Pulse (brand name); both PEMF. From my very rudimentary understanding, the technology is the same but the sign wave is a different shape… My brain can’t understand that…

I’ve personally only been Pulsed/Magna Waved twice; I thought they felt different but it was done on wildly different body parts. I had a pulled calf muscle Pulsed and it was sort of a hurt-so-good feeling. The soreness from the pulled muscle was still there afterwards but I wouldn’t lose control of that lower leg when riding. A few months ago when doing some marathon braiding at the Congress, my upper back was tight and angry from braiding and my lower back was angry from a subluxation that I’m working on having corrected. I used a friend’s Magna Wave on a fairly low setting and it about sent me in to the rafters. The feeling was completely different between the two and I don’t know if it was because the one ailment was purely muscle and the other was angry joints and nerves? Or something else?

If I were to buy, I would buy the Pulse brand machine. I’ve priced them out along with the attachments I want. They went on sale last month and if I had sold the horse that I thought I was going to get moved, I very well may have pulled the trigger.

Not sure if that answers your questions but feel free to ask more, and I probably won’t be able to do so

Think of PEMF as radio. Each brand has their own station/frequency to send out their music.

Sure but how does that affect what’s received?

@BroncoMo
You know that microwaves heat things up? And xrays go through some things and not others? Or that a specific sound can break glass?

Different frequencies affect the body differently.

There’s also a strength component. The tube/hose PEMF that sort of took on PEMF as a specific name produces a much stronger electro magnetic field than the Bemer. People often say they can see the muscle twitching.

 As an example (that may not be any good) say you get Charlie horses every week. You scream, and massage and eventually get the muscle to release. The PEMF is kind of like the massage - a direct approach to a specific problem. So people get PEMF to help with injury tension, or strain, etc. You get benefit from the one treatment.

Then you find out you need more calcium and magnesium in your diet, and pretty soon the Charlie horses stop happening. Bemer is more like the calcium and magnesium - it helps the body do what it’s supposed to be doing over time. It’s a long game, doing things that the tube PEMF simply can’t do, like reduce the effects of heaves (in my horse’s case).

It’s not a perfect analogy as Bemer does have some immediate beneficial effects, and tube PEMF can be beneficial as an occasional address tightness with no injury treatment.

Does that help?

It does, the analogies work. But from a microscopic standpoint, I still want to understand how different shaped sine waves affect things; not different frequency or amplitude, but different shapes. Square versus standard sine wave shape. And if that’s truly what the difference in feel was. I fully understand that tube-type PEMF machines are much stronger than a Bemer.

I suspect nobody really understands why or how these things do what they do!
