Ben Maher: Showjumper sued for £700,000 in 'secret profits' case

I haven’t seen this posted here yet…

Not good…

What? Agents telling clients their horse sold for a lower selling price and pocketing the difference? Never heard of that happening before…

No one can blame them for suing if this is true. Bad for horse sport, though.

Very interesting…

If it’s true, he made a pretty handy profit on some of those horses! $350,000 .

Curious to see how it all shakes out.

Bloody disappointing if true.

Yes, I’ll be very disappointed because I really liked him–I always rooted for him even though he’s British. I wonder if Jane Clark will take her horses back as well? Seems like she is not the type to like any shady business with her horses.

If it is true and I hope it is not, this kind of practice coupled with the drug use, are two reasons why some governmental agency is going to come in and start regulating the horse industry. We need to have a code of conduct that is enforceable to avoid that. USEF does what it can about the drug use but once it is seen as ineffective, the government will respond to citizens cries for regulation.

Interested to see if the allegations are true or not, but either way the sad thing is that this happens way too often in the industry.

I wondered that as well. Undeniable that it would be a gain if they ended up being ridden by Americans, but they’ve gone beautifully for him. He’s a wonderful rider.

Regardless, it’s a shame to see so much talent under the radar for bad reasons lately- first Jock Paget and now this.

some state agencies are already regulating sales and commissions, you still have to have proof to win in court…

If the UK law doesn’t already have an opinion on it (and they may well prohibit it) I wonder if this will change that?

I don’t think the average citizen is too worried about ponies dropping dead before their hunter round. I’m sure there was some talk after the NY Times article, but the horse business has been having shady dealings for centuries and there isn’t a whole lot of regulation outside the sports where they are trying to protect bettors, or business transactions. Heck, there aren’t a whole lot of regulations for the disciplines that abuse horses (like horse tripping).

I’d love the USEF to take a stronger stand on these kinds of issues, but I’m not holding my breath. The FEI can’t even get its own house in order.

Funny I see no results for Tackeray since August of this year. Wonder if he’s laid up.

Or is Lauren competing in Europe right now?? Anyone know?

Also my questions is was the rider from January/WEF Eirin Bruheim someone from Ben’s camp or was the the purchaser in question??

Although maybe he’s not laid up, maybe he switched to the first year greens, with a new name.

(That’s a joke)

If I bought a horse for $850,000 and found out the seller was selling it for $500,000, I’d jump on the lawsuit bandwagon myself.

Totally disappointed, was a huge BM fan. Oh, well…such is the horse world.

interesting - am wondering if the situation is as simple as not having discussws the price in GBP vs USD - if the horse was sold for the purchase price of 500,000 GBP to someone in USA the conversion to USD would be about $850,000 which makes sense but its moot if the conversation about purchase being in GBP or USD wasn’t clearly laid out; and how ridiculous would that be if it were that simple

Certainly it’s not the first time we’ve heard of this happening. But if he really did this, and not just to anyone but to the people who’ve sponsored him since he was 22… there are no words. :-o

Don’t you think any discrepancy due to currency conversion would be straightened out prior to a lawsuit being filed? Don’t think a lawyer is going to file a lawsuit and then a month later discover it has no merit because one figure is in USD and the other is in GBP.

You would hope so.
