One of my barn cats grabbed and ate a french fry from me when I wasn’t looking.

I looked at Beneful when we got our dog. I was horrified to see avocado in the ingredient list, as avocados contain Persin, which is extremely toxic to dogs. I sure wouldn’t feed it.

One of my cats is obsessed with curry. Has to be shut in the bedroom while we’re eating it. The dog adores French fries, but only gets a couple as a treat after vet visits.

Then why is there Avoderm?

Is An Avocado Toxic to Dogs and Cats?

This much is true: Parts of an avocado contain an oil-soluble toxin called persin. Specifically, the fruit’s seed, bark and leaves are composed of this toxic, fatty acid derivative.
But is persin poisonous to our dogs and cats?

“Despite the rumors, avocado is not poisonous to dogs, nor likely to cats,” says Dr. Justine Lee, a board-certified veterinary specialist in both emergency critical care and toxicology and the CEO and founder of VetGirl.

“Dogs and cats don’t seem to be affected by persin,” explains Lee. "However, birds and large animals (such as horses and cattle) have issues with persin toxicity, as it can be deadly in these species.

“The bigger risk to dogs and cats is the foreign body obstruction that can occur when the avocado seed is ingested—it’s a large seed and can get stuck in the esophagus, stomach or intestinal tract.”

So, while avocado is safe for our dogs and cats to eat, the best bet is to limit their access to the fruit itself. This can prevent accidental choking as well as unexpected emergency surgery to remove the golf ball-sized pit from within your pet’s body.

Pet birds, however, should never be fed avocado.

Well, I was feeding Beneful until this thread. Last night I was in the grocery store reading ingredients of several dog foods and I selected the grocery store premium brand. It’s 5 bux more expensive per bag but at least I’m not feeding garbage.

Interestingly, when I told my new vet I was feeding Beneful she said as long as they’re doing well on it, no worries. They were actually doing better on it than TOTW.

You folks do realize that Purina pets foods are owned and manufactured by Nestle and Purina equine/ livestock feeds are owned and manufactured by Land O Lakes, right??? Two totally separate companies!!!

Does it matter? Cheap, crappy ingredients = cheap, crappy food… dressed up in a nicely marketed package.

Huh. I’ll have to point my vet toward the info on avocados, since that’s where I was getting my info from.

Well yes, I would think facts should matter, especially when you are talking about recalls involving one company that is not related to another!

In regards to quality? Sorry, same name means they’re related. At least as a consumer deciding whether or not to buy a product, there’s a reason companies use the same name, or use a different one. Purina may =/= Purina, but as a consumer, Purina = Purina for good, bad, or ugly.

Beneful’s an absolute joke, an amazing story about how truly gullible american consumers are. Take the worst possible dog ingredients you can get away with, manufacture a truly unhealthy food, then advertise it heavily and sell it at a hefty price (for a lower-quality dog food, that is). There are a lot of dog foods out there with equally bad ingredients but they are sold at prices more reflective of their quality or lack thereof.
One glance at the ingredients in Beneful should tell you it’s not something your dog is going to do well on. And it’s expensive for what it is- if you want to feed your dog that kind of non-nutritious junk, why not go for ones sold at a more appropriate price?
I met someone yesterday who recently lost her dog. She fed him Beneful. It was something she picked up at the store because she was in a hurry, not his usual food.
He died rather quickly and the vet did not recognize it for what it was. Said it was cancer. It was a horrible experience.

Interesting…

When I was a small animal practitioner, my #1 rule for clients was “No colors, no shapes”!
Add to that what one of my teachers says–“the first three ingredients ought to have had a pulse at some point.”

They are not related.

The original Purina Mills split into separate corporatins years and years ago. As said, Nestle owns the small animal stuff; in the US Land o Lakes bought the livestock line.

Alright. Then why do all these companies carry the same name?

Who is talking about recalls? I thought this thread was about a lawsuit.

I don’t know anyone who feeds Beneful to their horse, so it seems to me that the horse food/dog food conversation is an unrelated spinoff. Shrug.
