Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)

I like the cobalt square jar, too. Easier to pack in the grooming box, less likely to tip over, more volume in the jar.

Ps. I sent you an email

Yay! It’s here (and, omg, love the lavender scent!).

I agree, conditioner in a square jar.

All of my tack (and my hands!) LOVE this soap, especially my thirsty Shleese! My boots finally look decent again, and the halter I was rehabbing from finding it IN the creek is so soft! (It needed conditioning in addition to cleaning, but still).

I keep meaning to clean Toby’s daily halter since it keeps getting rained on with these summer storms (ā€œsummer,ā€ I say with a laugh, since it is 55 degrees and windy!).

Bensmom, I will be making an order today for my first jar. Am totally intrigued by all these great reviews. Just HAVE to try it!

Another vote for square conditioner jar.

And a question, does this cleaner leave the leather slippery, tacky, or neutral?

And one other question, everyone here is saying clean their tack daily now, I was told to wipe down my new saddle with a damp cloth after use, and condition as needed, DON’T use soap/cleaner unless absolutely necessary. Is this just a dressage world vs eventing world thing? I would imagine your tack would get dirtier on a daily basis than mine would. Anyway, I love my new saddle and want to keep it in great condition so… If lightly wiping it with ā€œHigher Standardsā€ after every use will keep it in tip top shape, then that is what I will do!

thanks Bensmom

This stuff absolutely does not leave tack sticky. It is SO SOFT, supple, and shiny.

I don’t wipe my saddles with it daily, but I have taken to wiping them off more now than I ever have (that is also in part due to a new jump saddle). Saddles are shiny, but newer saddle definitely still gets thirsty without the occasional coat of something a little more conditioning.

Hunter rider here, and I wipe down tack after every ride. I had used Effax Leder-Combi to do this previously but now I am using bensmoms soap (love). I generally don’t use a conditioner or oil but maybe once or twice a year and using just a damp sponge with water just doesn’t seem as fun to me

All my tack has looked great with that routine.

Order made!!!

I have been using my Higher Standards soap for a couple weeks now (Citrus Ginger - love it!) and I have to say its hands down the best tack soap I’ve ever tried. And I have tried them all! So looking forward to the conditioner (square cobalt jar? yes, please!) and limited edition holiday scents. All my horsey friends are getting HSLC for Christmas this year!

Just got mine in yesterday. Cleaned my saddle with the vanilla lavender and I’m impressed!

I ordered mine and love it. I sent some really nice before and after pics of my tall boots to Bens Mom. Told her she can use them for advertising too

Anyways - I posted my review on another forum, but I love this stuff!

I shamelessly plugged The Soap to a fellow boarder today… and she is completely sold. I helped her clean this scrungy old breastplate, and even though I was there cleaning it, the before and after pictures leave me gobsmacked.

You can see the pictures here

There are just two. Please don’t bore yourself with all the other random timeline photos!!!

Cheater, you can’t use an ā€œafterā€ pic of a brand new piece of tack! WOW!

Bensmom must be sooooo busy! We have, what, 25 pages of people, probably 10-20 replies each page, of people who have either ordered it or are ordering it, and plugging it!!

Overnight (well, almost  )!!!

Yay!

I laughed about that the other day! It seems like an ā€œovernightā€ success, but I’ve been working on the product for 9 years!

I’m so glad that everyone has been happy with it, and so grateful to the COTH’ers who have offered advice and helped it get launched. I was so scared to take that step, and it is more complicated than I thought, but it has been fun and exhilarating!

So many more exciting things are on the horizon! In June, we launch the first limited edition scent – by popular vote, it will be the Confidence Aromatherapy blend, then I plan to have the leather balm ready – it seems to be working really well. I just want a little more time with a jar to see what happens to it when it is left in a hot trailer in the summertime . . .

And, we have actually been working on the bit cleaner too – and that is really fun. Anything you drop in water and it fizzes up like a volcano takes me right back to 6th grade science projects, and makes me giggle everytime.

And shouldn’t cleaning tack be fun, if you have to do it?!

I’ve also got a surprise in development that if it goes well, I’ll reveal later in June!

Wheeeeee! It’s been hard work, but so much fun!

Thank you all for your help and encouragement!!

Libby

How long does a jar typically last? I’m not sure why I’m even slightly hesitant purchasing because of all the reviews but just curious before I hit the order submit!

I think it totally depends. yellowbritches barn went through the first 8 oz pretty quickly, but that was with a lot of different people using it. It also matters whether or not you store your sponge in the jar, and if you do, how wet it is when it goes in the jar. Really wet sponge popped back in the jar will give you dissolved gloopy mess pretty quickly.

I’m still using the container I made over a year ago, but then I haven’t ridden or cleaned tack much this year.

Clear as mud, right?!

I want to add ā€œProud member of The Original Saddle Soap Test Squadā€ to my signature but it’s too many lines

(And I still love the soap!)

Edited to add: I DID IT

Okay, I’ve had mine for weeks and I’m finally jumping on the bandwagon because I got all of my tack clean :). I LOVE it! Now Bensmom, you better never go out of business because I will personally stalk you and beg you to make more!

I won’t go back to any of the myriad of cleaners I’ve tried over the years because they all pale in comparison. The pleasant scent takes the chore out of cleaning take too. LOVE it and now can’t live without it!

I just cleaned a boat-load of tack over the weekend and it barely made a dent. I cleaned a giant old western saddle with fenders too! I used maybe 1/4 of the jar on 3 halters, 4 bridles, 2 pair of boots, long line reins, western saddle, 3 pairs of leathers, a filthy cribbing collar, 3 girths, a pony bridle and some odds and ends on surcingles. Oh, and my purse!
