Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)
The rosemary mint is my favorite. Rosemary is more herby smelling than floral…after all, it is an herb! More in the range of a subtle pine.
Thanks for the clarification! That does help actually, it may be too different for my sensitive snoot so I’ll stick with planning to order the citrus ginger.

I posted my B&A pics, and a bonus “rinse water” pic on the HSF page. I love this stuff!

I love the soap - my tack looks great, and my hands don’t feel disgusting after cleaning. Did I miss when the conditioner will be tested and ready? I love the Oakwood Leather Conditioner, but it makes my hands feel all grimy and gross!

Well other thing you can do is pick up some Rosemary at your local grocery store. It will be with the spices–fresh is best. Should give you and idea of the smell. Plus it is good for cooking. Fairly strong flavor…I love it on roasted red potatoes (garlic and rosemary)

It really isn’t very strong in this soap

I love Rosemary! But BFNE is right, it isn’t nearly as strong in the soap as it is with the actual herb. Both Aveda, and Suave have a rosemary/mint shampoo & conditioner that the smell is close to == I use the shampoo and that is what gave me the idea to try the scents together for the saddle soap! Imitation is flattery and all that!

I’m hoping to have the first batches of the conditioner ready to sell in about 10 days. Still haven’t settled on a jar. Research & Development (that would be me!) likes the square jar, but finance and shipping (DH) does not.

I think I’m going to order one package of them and see, though and order a pack of 2 oz sizes, which Finance & Shipping is also concerned about.

We shall see!

Thanks for all the support! I just packed up all the current orders and they will head out to Clothelia at our tiny P.O. tomorrow!!

(and I LOVE fresh rosemary scattered over potatoes and root veggies to roast! Yum!)

Got a tub of this in our IEA N3D goody bag. Awesome smelling and great on my tack. Where were you when I worked for Karen in the early 90’s :frowning:

Oh, wow! So glad you liked it! That was a big order for the IEA goody bags, but I am so glad to be able to give back to the sport.

And in the early 90’s, I hadn’t bought the first cow pony yet, and was still playing tennis and going to law school. I didn’t lose my mind and buy the first horse until '96, when I discovered my true passion – which is apparently spending lots of money on horses with issues!

Please let me know what you think!

I use that same shampoo! Love it – it’s a good balance with the mint, and the rosemary smell isn’t too overwhelming. We have a HUGE patch of rosemary on the side of my apartment building (literally about 10 feet wide), and it smells lovely!

Got my vanilla lavendar soap this weekend, so cleaned two saddles and two bridles last night. Now my tack is black so it just does not show the impressive changes that brown tack might, but one on-looker commented that the bridle I was cleaning was “glowing” and what was I using, so I told her and she wanted the etsy address so I gave her the address portion of the directions tag Bensmom sent with product. Black tack just doesn’t “glow” so I thought that was a positive comment. Everyone thought it smelled really good. It definitely didn’t suds much, so there wasn’t much to rinse off.

After doing two saddles and two bridles, my daughter looked in the tub and said it didn’t look like I had even touched it! So it should last a long time.

For you guys who actually clean saddles every ride (or almost) do you do the entire saddle, under flaps and all or just the seat and top of flap/knee roll?

And how thoroughly should I rinse this off versus leaving on for conditioning effect, especially if cleaning daily so there is minimal actual dirt to remove?

Great product Bensmom!

Here’s my grand marketing idea - could you enclose some business cards with each package so we can pass the card out to everyone who asks us about our wonderfully clean tack??? I’d be happy to pin one up at my barn!

Jo – that is a great idea! I JUST got my cards this week and I will stick a few in the packages that I prep for shipping tonight!

COTH’ers are making great evangelists!!

arabiansrock – It is hard to describe, but if I am not making visible lather that needs wiping off, I have usually just taken my sponge, picked up some of the soap and wiped stuff down, without going back to wipe off. Basically, that is what I’ve seen some BNG (big name grooms – I’m inventing a new acronym!) do, and I figure those that do it for a living know what they are doing!

Here is a thought – would a short video clip showing how I use the soap be helpful? I was toying with the idea of short videos on some other things, when I was trying to explain how I wrap a foot to someone at a distance, for instance. I have no desire to be a video star, but surely I can con someone into being in a short video clip for me? Good idea to put on a website, or too much trouble to watch?

Thanks again for all the comments!!!

Another satisfied customer… I got my orange-ginger saddle soap and then didn’t get to the barn for a week. I finally got to try it today, and wow… just wow. I have a black dressage saddle that’s picked up some scuffs… they’re GONE now. My bridle also looks awesome.

Now I just have to make sure no one steals it. (One of the disadvantages of being in a barn with kids… stuff “grows legs” sometimes and I am lucky if I find it a month later in the school horses’ grooming kit. Currently missing: my fly spray in its brand new bottle! Hypothesis is that one of the kids grabbed it on Sunday morning on the way to a show and it didn’t come back.)

My soap just arrived

I just got my citrus ginger soap and cleaned some old bridle parts so I could create a new bridle for my gag bit. Loved the smell and how easily the soap applied and removed scum. Now I want to get a different flavor so I can choose which one to use in the barn and in the house…probably also need one for the horse trailer…

My only suggestion to Bensmom is that on the jar, I had a hard time finding and reading “Buzz’s Citrus Ginger”. When I opened the jar, I immediately wanted to know what I was smelling. Are you color coding the jars so that each scent has a different color? Maybe you could highlight the name/scent in a different color on the label or somehow make the print larger. Otherwise it looks really good.

Also over 40 and I had a hard time reading the print on the jar for what the “scent” was. Otherwise we are totally in love at my farm

Totally agree on the size of the name of the scent!!

What we have actually done is to move the name of the scent to the side labels. I am sad to say that y’all are still stuck with the temporary design for now. :o At this juncture, I am working with the label companies to pick the best waterproof label design and then to get them ordered. So many things to get picked out that I would never have imagined!! There isn’t an easily available home printable label for the side of the jars that won’t dissolve the first time it gets wet. The confidence scent, though, I am writing on the side of the jars and boy, is it easier to tell which is which!

So, for now, one thing that occurred to me was marking them in sharpie on top of the label - just to make it easier. I had to do that with a whole batch of the Rosemary Mint. The RM on it isn’t nearly as pretty, but a darn sight easier to see!!

So glad y’all are happy with them though!! Sample packs of the square jars to try for the conditioner, and of the 2 oz jars should arrive today!! So, I’ll be testing stuff in the kitchen this weekend!!

Please keep us posted- as I’m sure you will- about the status of the conditioner. I’m beginning to get frustrated with everything in my trunk that isn’t olive oil or balsam, and sometimes those just aren’t the right tools for the job!

So far, the reviews have been really good! I’m pleased with the fact that it seems to even add a bit of water resistance. My boots handled the rain quite well the other day, and then my saddle did well being wiped down with the soap, and then having a little conditioner added after I rode in the rain on Tuesday.

But, the reviews from my panel of experts have been really good. In fact, I was told to STOP tinkering with it! I’ve tried several different oils – what I know for sure is that the coconut oil was too greasy. The Almond and Safflower have been much better!

Now to see if we like the square jars!

I am also eagerly awaiting the conditioner! I find that I am trying to not condition my tack because it takes away the nice scent and my hands feel like greasy garbage afterwards. Can’t wait to upgrade

I got my soaps today…they smell SO good! I can’t decide which one to keep, which one to use as gift. And I can’t wait to try it.
Thank you for the business cards (and the candy!)

I’m very interested in the conditioner too. Will you make assorted scents, or different from the soap?

Got my soaps (lavender vanilla and confidence) in Wednesday as well as a leather balm tester. I LOVE both scents but the lavender vanilla is definitely my favorite of the two. It’s done an awesome job cleaning everything. My only complaint so far is that my western saddle that is highly tooled has a tendency to get the soap and the balm trapped in the crevasses and takes a bit longer to get the soap off but I figure I’m probably one of the few with that problem and it’s not the soap or balm’s fault. Overall, just fabulous and I’m really enjoying cleaning all my tack that’s been sitting around not getting used. Makes me feel productive
