Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)

Black and blue might work, since your labels are white with blue and black lettering. I guess a white jar with blue cap is not available? White with white and blue lettering? Such decisions. :). I am anxious to try the conditioner.

I wish that white jar/blue lid was available!!

I am willing to open up conditioner to COTH’ers for sale next week, if y’all are ok with it not being in the final jars, with the proper labels?

I need to do something with the square ones, after all – is it possible to have an ā€œoutlet saleā€ of it when it isn’t even available for general sale yet?

What do y’all think?

Libby

Received mine in the mail earlier in the week. It’s the lavender/vanilla and smells fabulous.

I had bought it for the new saddle I was getting ready to buy for my gelding, but I just had to retire him. :frowning:

But not to be a downer- I can’t wait to use it and loved that you included the candies.

Oooh, that leads me to another question – I like including a ā€œgoodyā€ of some kind in the package. The candy is fun, and my thought was that people or ponies might enjoy those!

But, someone suggested homemade pony treats and I’ve been experimenting with recipes for those. What would you think about getting a sample two or three pony cookies in the package instead of the candy?

Hmmm – Decisions, decisions!

Thanks!

Libby

I would be fine with buying the conditioner in the square jar without labels, just so you can get rid of them. It can’t be that hard getting the remaining product out of the corners, I’m sure we can manage. I didn’t even realize there was candy in the package until I went to throw out the envelope the next day and while its a nice idea, (and so are horse cookies), you might find as your business expands that life will be easier if you just concentrate on your cleaner and conditioner.

Sign me up for conditioner whenever it becomes available no matter what shape it’s in.

I’ll buy square jar conditioner. I’m not picky.

Ooh, I will buy the square jar conditioner!

I think it’s a fabulous idea!

me too on the square jar

Add me to those who don’t care what jar the conditioner comes in; I’ve got a thirsty saddle and a brand new leather shank to try it on!

Oooohhhh I can’t wait for the conditioner! I don’t care what jar it is in! I am jonesing for it! I LOVE the cleaner and have been anxiously awaiting the conditioner! And black and blue are my colors!

Ok, you guys have convinced me – later today I will post a notice here and on FB when I’ve got it up on Etsy . . .

It will eventually sell for a couple of dollars more than the soap as its ingredients are a little more expensive/hard to find and it is a little more labor intensive, but this exclusive ā€œbuy it before you can buy itā€ sale will be price closer to the soap, I think. Y’all will have to give me reviews, though! I wish I could have afforded time and money wise, to send out as many testers with it as we did the soap, but I couldn’t :frowning: But, I’m willing to do a special price on it if y’all can tolerate labels made with a sharpie and maybe some duct tape

I also need some feedback on whether, because it is a) a little more expensive, and b) something you don’t use as much as you do soap, if it would be better to package it in smaller jars? I thought I had ordered the 4 oz square jars, but they aren’t – they are 8 oz as well. Same size as the soap. But when I order the actual round jars, and I’m thinking blue with black tops . . . - I want to make sure and get what will be the best size.

Also! WARNING! I have Never Ever Ever had the soap melt on me once I’ve made it – kept in a hot horse trailer through a Florida summer. BUT, apparently, if you leave it in the sun on the seat of a black car on a 100+ degree day for 8 hours-- it will melt. :sigh:

Gives you a good idea of just how hot it gets in a closed up car – it has to be sustained temps of 160 for it to liquify and it dang sure did!

My mail AND my pants got covered with soap when I took the lid off to check it. :o

Libby

Got my soap, and after using it on the half chaps and tack, I put it to the ultimate test: my old, worn, still-kicking leather Rainbow sandals.
After five years of wear, all that dirt and sweat and grime had worked into the leather, and they were RANK. I cleaned them often, but the smell came back quicker each time. So I tried Bensmom’s wonderful soap (after seeing how buttery soft my half chaps are with this soap) on the sandals–holy awesome!
All the stink is gone, and they’re like new! The leather is soft and cushy, which they hadn’t been in years. And there is NO stickiness whatsoever, which would drive me crazy, walking on sticky sandals. I love this soap! And the amount of scent is PERFECT: just a pleasant whiff during cleaning, no residual smell.
Needless to say, Bensmom’s is the only soap I’ll use on my leather goods, whether it be saddles, chaps, or summer sandals

One question: sometimes I get a little streakiness after using (it’s tiny, but it irks the neat freak in me): am I just not wiping it away enough?

I just opened the package that came in the mail from you. The small sample size jar - is that 2 oz? For a gift, maybe a 4 oz jar would be better - thoughts? If you could PM me pricing on about 75 sample size jars (the size you sent me), that might help make up my mind! LOL!

I think offering the conditioner in 4 oz jars would be great; you’re right, you don’t use conditioner as often as soap - and the difference in size would help people distinguish between soap & conditioner when you’re reaching for a jar quickly. And I LOVE the scent of the conditioner - not overpowering, very pleasant.

Also - Going to use the conditioner on my thirsty 2001 Prestige & my brand new lead shank from Quillin today - what’s the best way to apply? In the past, when I’ve used leather balsam type conditioners, I usually take a bit, rub it in my palms to kind of melt it & use my hands to rub it into the leather. Sound good?

I’ll post reviews on the saddle & lead shank once they’re done! THANK YOU!

Taryn

Yes, exactly!! Or, you can also use a soft cloth to rub it in. I usually start with a soft rag, and then end up working it in with my hands. I can work up prices for you on both sizes of the small ones – I am thinking that it would be better to do gift packages with the ones that small. But, I’ll order some 4 oz jars and see what those look like. They just won’t be much of a $ saver for you, I’m afraid over the big ones – maybe what we need to do is just to run numbers and see!

And I don’t think I’ve ever seen streakiness! I would think perhaps rubbing it more in would be the answer? Hmmmm.

Off to experiment . . .

Thanks!

Libby

I didn’t experience any streaking on any of the old or new leather I’ve used it on. Libby, I will post a link to before/after pics of my saddle: before the conditioner, after the conditioner and then after wiping it down with the soap post-conditioner. What a difference in the little surface cracks in the calfskin saddle flaps!!

I showed the sample size jar to DH - he thinks that will be just fine for his clients’ holiday gifts, considering I’ve cleaned a LOT of leather and have hardly made a dent in my soap! So don’t worry about working up a price for the 4 oz jars… the 2 oz will be just fine.

THANKS!
Taryn

I have Before Conditioner, After Conditioner & After Conditioner / Soap Wipe-Down (those last photos have a bit of sun glare, but you can see the difference). https://plus.google.com/photos/111905546578685545738/albums/5889818950673245617?authkey=CO75k7Hynqr_LA

What GREAT pics!! Thank you so much! I will work up the price on the 2 oz jars and send you an email.

For everyone who has been waiting . . . the limited edition run of the conditioner is up on the Etsy shop – there are 18 jars available, with my only special request that you be willing to review it. It will eventually be a little higher priced than the other, as the ingredients are harder to get and it is more time consumer to make, but for this run, it is priced at almost the same (I did an even number rather than odd – that should help me see which thing is coming in on orders faster  )

I hope you all like it!

Libby

Yay, conditioner!

I ordered mine…not that I was sitting at the computer waiting for it to show up on the etsy site or anything

I will definitely provide feedback on how it performs out here in the hot, dry high desert climate. Very excited!!
