Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)
Unfortunately, gr8fulrider, the County Competitor (of which I am a fan and own) does fade due to their tanning process.
Thanks. I know-- that’s what my fitter said. It actually looks good, and I don’t think I’m going to bother trying to darken it up. But I do think I need to condition it well and I wanna try some of this 56-page-thread-worthy saddle soap.

How about

Saddle’s Little Helper

Hrm names

North Polish

Olive the other Reindeer

Elf Esteem

OK. So, I gave it a whirl on the Toby-trashed post xc tack. Here are my thoughts. I’m going to compare it a lot to Tatersall, which has been my favorite cleaner (til now???), and has a similar-ish history.

It does smell nice, but it is subtle. One thing I notice NOW (that I’m done), my hands don’t stink and aren’t sticky-gross like after using Tatersall.

It is MUCH lighter that Tatersall, but cleans easily. Even with the salty, grimy grossness of Toby’s tack. I started out using a barely damp sponge, like I do with Tatersall and wasn’t loving it. It DOES need to be truly damp. But no foam (I HATE foamy saddle soap!). And I liked it way better.

I did exactly as Bensmom says in “the Story of the Soap” and wiped it on and off. Normally, I run a damp rag over my tack, THEN soap. Didn’t need to. It loosened and removed the gross grimies without extra help…even the nastiness that were my reins.

Tack is now soft and shiny but not sticky. Pretty impressive considering how gross it was and that I basically just gave it a gentle scrub with a sponge (after xc a week ago, I hosed all his tack off before I cleaned it).

I’m impressed. I took pictures that I uploaded to FB, but they aren’t showing up. Go figure.
I’m going to try some once I wade through this thread and find out where to purchase it. I’m a Tattersall loyalist, too, so yellowbritches’s feedback on the first page is enough to tempt me!

Nuts I missed the CyberMonday sale, ah well

Just ordered three! Two as gifts, one for me!!

Finally got around to taking some pictures as I cleaned tack! I have them posted on my blog.

As impressed as I’ve been with things that have been visibly dirty, I have to say that I’m even more impressed with the results on things that are not as visibly dirty, like my new saddle. It was in great shape and clean when I bought it; I cleaned it with Starla’s Sugar & Spice and was amazed at how much better it looked - and it looked great to start!

I ordered some and gave it as a gift and it got RAVE reviews!!! Will definitely be ordering some for myself now and passing it on. Wonderful product!!!

Wait…wait…coupon code?! HOW did I miss this!! Aw crap!

ETA - cyber Monday code…duh. Oh well, ya snooze ya lose!!

Libby I think I sent you an email through Etsy asking if I could change one of my scents (ordered 3 of the Christmas ones) to the Lavender Vanilla instead. If its a hassle don’t worry about it!!

OH yay! I just ordered some to send to NZ as a gift. I hope they love it too!

To further confirm my addiction I now have 16 mini containers of Higher Standards on my coffee table… Yes Sixteen - for a total of 21 HSLC items in my possession at this time… In my defense all but two of the small samplers are gifts. I am sure my barn mates will love this soap! I am going to to put them in everyones tack trunk with a little note and the link to where they can order it

Must say I think the Citrus Ginger is a close runner up to the Starla’s Sugar and Spice in my book.

Libby I am going to PM you. There was a small issue with my order that is the reason I am keeping a couple for myself. (Not that upset about it… But still think you would want to know).

So very excited!! EN has made us their Holiday Gift guide item of the day!!

You guys get a shout out in the article for all of the wonderful crowdsourcing of ideas! Thank you so much for all of your support and suggestions!!

It was a great article. Congratulations. You deserve it.

I can’t wait to give the sampler pack to one of my good barn for Christmas. I think she’s really going to love it! I’m so happy for you Libby. The article was great!

Yay! Great write-up! I knew you would have to be part of the EN gift guide. I just got my special-edition holiday gift packs today and the Cinnamint is awesome (but the Sugar & Spice is still my fave)!

Great interview, Libby!! Way to go

Fantastic article! Keep the good stuff coming

Congrats on the article- that’s awesome!

Planning on getting some for my sisters for Christmas! Can’t wait to test some out myself, too.

Excited to see that my soap and balm is on it’s way to me at True Prospect Farm - loads of tack to use it on here!

Over time, the balm has gotten quite hard in the container. When it came, it was soft and pliable. Then after a month or so, I could warm it easily with my hands to get it out. Today I had a really hard time and had to basically scrape it out of the contained. Seemed to work fine once I got it on the sponge, but if you’re tweaking the recipe, I’d err on the side of a touch softer.
