Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)

Oh, wow!! Jarrn, thanks for the photos!!

I’ve been MIA for a bit, actually riding my own horse (and once in a while using my own products  ) so I have missed the latest comments and questions – Bristol Bay, I’ve never had any curdle, so I’m not sure exactly what is happening? I’ve left it in the trailer for months, and have used some that has been more than a year old, and gone through a Florida Summer and never had a problem. Can you drop me a note at higherstandardsfarm at gmail.com and let me know what you are experiencing?

Thank you guys so much for the feedback!!

Libby

i just purchased my first HSLC item (the combo pack w/ citrus)!! will be eagerly anticipating its arrival… with all the crippling winter weather, i have a lot of tack to clean

i will report back for sure – have a few neglected/thirsty strap goods that definitely need some attention.

I just wanted to report that further research revealed that if you leave too much water in the sponge, it can cause the soap to turn creamy. That’s apparently what I did. The jar this happened to is the one I keep under the sink ( as opposed to the one I keep in the basement for cleaning tack, or the one I keep in my locker at the barn, or the one I gave my groom to use on my bridle) to clean my shoes with every day as I go out the door. So my bad–it was just carelessness on my part.

Nevertheless, Bensmom sent me a jar as part of her R and D team.

She’s the best!

Today’s random HSLC thought: Bensmom, you should do a “show us your empty jar” campaign on social media. Enter people in a raffle for a free jar, or whatever. (Says the girl who polished off another jar of HSLC last night and re-appropriated it as a container for sugardine…yay for abscesses).

I listed my saddle for sale after cleaning it with Higher Standards. The saddle hasn’t sold yet, but I have gotten lots of compliments on how nice it looks and several inquiries into what I use to clean it!

Following up to chime in as a pleased customer. The soap lasts FOREVER. I am seriously 1/10th of the way through the container after 6+ months of regular use. The conditioner is going more quickly but I have a lot of very old (15+ years old) tack. I love how easily it absorbs. I also use it in a pinch as a lip balm and hand moisturizer out at the barn.

the reports are in! I will have to snap some pictures tomorrow.

I purchased the Citrus & Ginger soap and the Balm.

First, I tested the soap’s mettle by matching it against a throw-away girth I had come across a year ago. Tough first battle, but I figured the blade needed to be wetted, so to speak. It worked very well at cutting the old dirt jockeys from the leather. I rescued this girth from a barn’s dumpster… so… it isn’t in the best shape. Cleaned it with the soap and you’d never guess it was someone’s throw-away.

I also cleaned my jump saddle (NOT a dumpster baby, mind you!). It’s seen its days of over-oiling, admittedly – I have this problem you see, where I have to religiously clean my tack to the point where it is cleaner than my laundry. The Citrus soap did a spectacular job of riding my saddle of that post-leaderbalsam feel, the dull greasy feeling on the seats and its repulsive attraction to dirt.

I’m very happy with the soap - it gave my girth a renewed vigor for life despite its initial reluctance to look presentable. This girth probably existed before I was born (and probably was not ever cleaned SINCE I was born) and now it looks like it was show ready.

I then tackled my dressage saddle, a senior Kieffer with some grey around its temples… It hasn’t been used all winter and it was very thirsty. The soap left it with a nice little gleam, like that fresh new leather sheen you see on the saddles of the modern age.

I couldn’t be happier with the soap. It did a swell job of freshening my bridles as well. I do like how the soap leaves a gloss - it’s like the gloss of glycerin without the drying effect. It does repel dirt too - my BIGGEST peeve about the higher end balms and soaps is that even after one ride they accumulate enough dirt to make a PC inspector have an aneurysm.

Then comes the balm - which I have to profess I am a little perplexed about. I opened up the can and the smell was divine, but my can was frozen (through no fault of HS). The day it was delivered happened to be in the single digits, and it sat out for several hours.

Which comes to my question, is the balm a balm… or is it hard? My balm is about the same consistency as the soap. The hardness did not effect the quality however – a little goes a long way and definitely leaves my leather with the rich patina you’d expect of Akene or Belharra without the greasy residue that attracts dust or hair. I wish it wasn’t so hard as it makes it difficult to spread, but I was very happy with the job it did on my tack.

I’ll have to get some pictures!

I also cleaned and conditioned my saddle with HSLC products before taking it to a consignment sale. It sold! For the same price that I bought the saddle 13+ years ago. Can’t give all of the credit to HSLC, but it certainly helped. And I LOVE the scents of everything. I bought the rosemary mint, citrus ginger, and balm. I’m getting ready to purchase the remaining scents to give as gifts, in part so that I can get a whiff of those, too. LOL

My balm was also frozen when it arrived here in below-freezing temps. I expected as much. It has softened a bit here in the house. I don’t find it problematic to use. What has been a challenge is finding the right water:sponge ratio to prevent sudsing when using the cleaners. I wet the sponge and wring it out as much as possible by hand, but it always creates suds. It’s a little better if I squeeze the sponge in a paper towel after I’ve hand-squeezed out the water. Is there a magic trick to this?

So I recently ordered a combo back of soap and balm to keep at home, for things like shoes, etc., and have discovered a small “problem” with the balm. Apparently my dog thinks it’s food! I had it sitting open on the coffee table, cleaning and conditioning a pair of shoes, and she came in and started licking it. I guess in addition to doing a great job with leather, it also is tasty (to my weird, weird dog)

So…I am a tack cleaning Nazi. After working for a saddler during my teenage years I am also a bonafide product snob using only very expensive certain German products.

Over the years I would succumb to reviews and marketing and buy something else…only for it to immediately be relegated to the paddock boot cleaning only bucket. And my bucket overfloweth. So I just stopped buying anything new. My will was STRONG.

I saw this thread a year ago and watched with interest but resisted…until I was buying goat supplies at Jeffers and needed just a bit more to get free shipping.

I caved. And man oh man I am glad I did!!

The cleaner is far superior to my German stuff. I am in love (as well as honestly shocked).

I have ordered the balm now as well.

Just.Do.It. You will not be disappointed (at least in the cleaner -we’ll see on the balm).

Wow, had no idea it was at Jeffers. Very impressed!

Any new scent planned in the near future? I should have bought sugar and spice or the sweet lemon, but forgot and then they were gone!

It has been at Jeffers almost a year now (a little less) LOVE LOVE LOVE Libby’s stuff (and she is the nicest person ever as well).

I have just given the soap the ultimate test - a co-worker (who is NOT horsey) has a pair of leather boots that were very expensive. A year ago (and the second time the co-worker wore them) she was at a concert and someone actually vomitted on her new boots. She has been unable to remove the scent or the marks from her boots. She acknowledges that some of this may be stain from the acid in the vomit. But she is using HSLC tonight to see if she can salvage her boots

I think I have the ultimate testimonial

I loaned a work friend (NOT a horsey person) my HSLC soap to clean her expensive boots that one of her friends had vomited on. She had only worn them 2 or 3 times and has tried everything for the last year to get rid of the smell as well as the stains from the acid in the vomit.

She ONLY used the soap - no conditioner yet. She had been at the point of throwing them out.

Here was her results with two cleanings with the soap…
The smell is gone
MOST of the stains are gone. I’m going to loan her the conditioner and see if she can get them the rest of the way out.

I’ve said it before - Libby’s soaps are the BEST bar NONE.

Whoa! That is amazing news! Not sure how best to spin that testimonial for advertising purposes, but certain I can come up with something!!

While we are gearing up for Rolex for the first time, (alas, only to send product up for Wise Choice to feature it, as I can’t go with a busted knee :frowning: :frowning: ) I want to take a minute and thank all of you – all of you that tested, that bought, that wrote testimonials, that told me where problems were and gave us a chance to fix them.

I never, in a million years, dreamed I’d have a product that was going to be featured by a Rolex vendor, and without the encouragement that the eventers here on COTH provided, I probably never would have gotten here!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,

Libby

Bensmom, that’s fantastic! So crazy, but not at all surprising.

“When your friends can’t handle gettin’ buzzed on suds, try our soap!”

I kept meaning to order some, after reading all the fantastic reviews, but I was never at the computer when I thought, gosh, I really do need to try that!

Thankfully this thread was brought up towards the top. I just placed my first order… so excited to try it!

After seeing all the responses on this thread I ordered the combo pack and tried it. I have to say I love it! I do still use the hydrophane oil on the really dry tack after using the soap, but then I finish it with the conditioner and end up with even nicer leather than my previous standard method. I’m Definitely hooked.

You may not be at Rolex but how many of the riders are using it now ? Must be 5-10 that use/sponsored now.

Keep up the awesome work!

P.

Of course I’m not heading to Rolex this year!

Will you be featuring the Lemon scent at Devon again though? I will be there and would love to get my hands on one. I love lemon!
