Best Body Clippers

Lister Stars for the body, Andis AGC for the legs and face. Making sure the horses are clean before you clip will allow you to get multiple clips out of the blades. As will taking care of the blades during and after clipping by cleaning and oiling more often you might think.

I. use the medium blades (A2/AC) with my Lister clippers and the Andis #10 ceramic edge ones for the Andis clippers.

I second this emotion. Here is why:

The Andis AGC Super 2 is, in my opinion, the best multipurpose clipper you can get. I body clipped with mine for years. But on a double coated horse, the T-84 blade chokes and stalls. The winter hair coat of a Cushings horse is just too much for it. The Lister Star cuts through it like butter.

I use the Premier 1 medium blade- the blade that comes with the clipper is too fine. I can use the Lister Stars from ankles to cheekbones on my horse. They do tend to run a bit on the warm side, but this is usually because of hair clogging the venting- I took the vent cover off and brush it out every 5 minutes, and they run much better. I finish legs and face with my Andis #10s.

I also send my blades to Premier1 for sharpening. They do a great job and have a quick turn around.

There’s a reason this combo is the consensus - it works! Clipping season is winding down now, but I’ve done just shy of 150 full body clips since September. A few more thoughts:

• Lister Stars are a big step up from lighter weight trimmers such as the Andis AGC’s. However, if you have just a bit more money to spend go for the upgrade to Lister Legends. They are slightly heavier, but make the Stars look whimpy. They run cooler (will get warm but not hot), require less babysitting/maintenance than the Stars, and will really cut through anything.

• Premier1 medium blades are the way to go for most body clipping. I routinely get 10-15 clips from one set of blades. Love their fast sharpening service as well. Premier1 clipper oil works great and is very reasonably priced.

• For legs/face and even light body clipping, Andis AGC2 are great. #10 blades are shorter than the Premier1 Mediums, so use T84 blades or Andis Size 1 (2.4mm) if you’d like to blend the two. I got tired of replacing blade drives and blade drive covers on my Andis, so I upgraded to Laube Cowgirls. They are great, and the lights on the clippers can be helpful sometimes.

• Cooling sprays are great for cleaning, but terrible for lubricating. I use the spray after each horse to clean/disinfect blades, followed by oil before storing the blades. For horses that are dirtier than ideal, I use the spray every few minutes to clean the blades followed by oil.

I live in Tucson, AZ, and my newish horse is barely shedding. We have a show coming up the second weekend in April, and I’m praying he’s going to blow out his coat before then. His coat isn’t particularly long, but it’s dense. He’s an 11 year old Appy cross.

I have Lister Stars and love them, especially compared to my old Oster Clipmasters. Since seeing this thread I’m excited to try the Premier 1 medium blades.

That is a lot of clipping! Bless you and your hair laden clothes. Or do you wear something special?

If it’s cold enough, I may wear a rain suit. If not, I wear this. Not totally impervious to hair but is a HUGE help at keeping it out of unmentionable places

Hat, mask and glasses are also standard attire. Admittedly 2020 was the first year I started using a mask, but I’ve grown to quite like it!
