Best Custom Saddler?

I agree with most of the posts. It is imperative that first the saddle fits your horse, and puts you in the right position. Many of the saddles mentioned above did not fit my horse well. He is slightly short backed. Many would slip over his shoulder while riding, or flap in the back at the canter. I first worked with George from Canterbury farm (equation saddlery) in WI, do a custom saddle, sort of a schleese knockoff. It never fit my horse properly, and he was impossible to get out to the barn to fix or adjust. After a year I just wanted my money back. I had to invest in chiropractic, massage etc., as it was killing my horse. So much for Custom. He never returned my calls or the BBB, so it is now sitting collecting dust. So it is imperative that you find someone you trust and is reputable.

I don’t know where you are located but I had Ann from Equestrian imports come to my stable in IL- she is based out of Florida. www.equestrianimports.com. We ended up with an Albion that she did not have to make any adjustments to. After one year all is still well, horse going fabulously, and he is not hurting anymore.

County is my #1

I LOVE County saddles. Have ridden in older and newer ones, different models and sizes and find that this saddle fits me best, puts me in the correct position and also fits a wide range of horses. The saddle fitter was out at our barn and was AMAZED that one County WB medium tree fit 3 completely different shaped horses (a TB, a TB/QHx and a Spotted Draft) well. That being said, my advice is to ride in as many saddles as you can before you order a custom saddle and be sure you are working with a very experienced fitter:yes::yes::yes:

How about Smith Worthington? They are a great small shop in CT. Been making saddles since George Washington was president! Very good customer service and knowledgable. I wish I could afford one of their custom made saddles. The best I could do was buy one off the rack. Fortunately, it fits my TB very well! I think their website is www.smithworthington.com

Absolutely! Don’t sit in one unless you’re prepared to buy one.

I just got back from my fitting with Jochen Schleese. Now, first of all, I didn’t realize he was gonna be the one fitting my saddle, LOL! But second of all, I’m so excited to have a truly custom fit saddle!

I bought the saddle on e-bay on impulse, then scheduled the fitting with the local Schleese rep. It was fit to a narrow TB, and my horse is XXXXXW and mutton withered. I was nervous, but within 2 hours I had a custom fitted saddle, fixed up right before my eyes.

He widened it out so I could get it on him, then had me ride him around a bit (I’m not actually riding right now because of an accident, but I sat on him and got ponied around), and he checked the dust pattern under the saddle. He then fixed around the flocking and repeated the exercise and, VOILA, custom saddle! I loved it so much I had to by a girth too!

i second Albion.

their saddle fitter (Kate Athenas from Dutchess Bridle and Saddle) came out and fitted my super hard to fit mare for a saddle. the front was made to her template. it fits amazingly!
i got an a/p saddle but my gf got the Albion SLK which is sooo beautiful!

also, i know that Kate is working with a saddle master from Long Island, NY, who just came out with his own custom line of saddles. i’ve heard good things about them as well.

Sweet! that’s about the same experience I had with him when I got my first 2 Schleese saddles for my boy. Jochen is VERY into educating and not selling and will put as much time into those saddles as needed

I just got mine adjusted for my girl, since after a year of solid work her back has muscled up a LOT and unbalanced the saddles a bit. Alas, Jochen doesn’t come out to UT but the rep we get here is very good, no doubts.

Jochen Schleese

DId you know he is actually lecturing about saddlefit at the FN Riding School in Warendorf Germany? He is doing more and more of that kind of thing rather than actually selling saddles - hope he has lots of trained saddlefitters coming up through the ranks! He always said his passion is teaching.
