best dog/house keeping suggestions for a family with allergies

The retriever breeds seem to be among the worst for allergies, because whatever it is in their skin and coat that makes them good at dealing with water seems to make them extra stinky and allergenic.

We have a Chow mix that my DH is not allergic to. Her coat is so dense that nothing gets from her skin to the surface (or vice versa).

I thought our vacuum had a HEPA filter on it, and that the bags were HEPA rated, but recently I bought super fancy cloth-like vacuum bags that said they were for allergies, muttering at the expense. They cost 10x as much but the improvement in the air quality afterwards was apparent even to me, the non-allergic person.

If you have central air conditioning or heat, you can add a HEPA filtration system to it. We don’t have one, but I’ve heard they are well worth the cost. Even running it on a fan setting will clean the air.

Another thing that we do, that is not necessarily directly related to dogs, is that we take our shoes off when we come in. It does help somewhat with keeping the house cleaner. You might also try having a button shirt or light jacket that is worn when handling or petting the dog, then take it off and wash your hands when you’re done.

bath your dog often, weekly if you can, vacume daily, at least the high traffic areas. Keep the dog out of your bedroom (I know its cruel, but you will be able to breathe).

Wash your bedding every 2 or 3 days. If you can, invest in a steam cleaner for your furniture and carpets and do this monthly.

My mom and I both have terrible allergies and I live very comfortably with 2 aussies and a cat.

There are so many great breeds out there, please don’t limit yourself just to goldens. So many dogs that are much better for allergies are in need to adoption. Pit bulls type dogs, greyhounds, and other short, single coated breeds. I honestly don’t see the draw of golden, or even worse, golden doodles. There are SO many great dog breeds.

I’m allergic to everything, including my dogs, cats, and horses. I take Zyrtec and Nasacort daily (365 days per year). We have all hardwood floors (no rugs) and a Roomba. We don’t let dogs in our bedroom or on the furniture (which is all leather). Wash towels and bedding weekly. The only time I remember I have allergies is when I forget to take my allergy meds… otherwise, I’m comfortable and breathe easy!

Definitely get a Roomba.

I was thinking about Saleh Stevens MMA, any suggestions?

I assume they figured out how to manage their dog in the past 9 years.

Wow … it looks like I was the one who brought this back to the top, but for the life of me I don’t know how. I didn’t search for it and would have only posted on it if it was already recently posted on. Weird.

I am not reading through the whole thread.

OP- it is irresponsible of you to get a dog that is know to have dander etc attributing to allergies when you or someone in your home HAS allergies. You are setting the dog up for a give-a-way or worse.

If you want a golden soooooooooooooooo badly- get a golden doodle. (I personally would advise you to stay dogless with the attitude of “I know what is best but I don’t want to hear it”).

If you insist on setting the dog and you up for heartbreak

  1. have a dog free zone
  2. don’t let the dog on furniture or beds or in bedrooms
  3. get hepafiletered vacuums, filters for your furnace etc
  4. try to keep the dog off of carpet as much as possible. It isn’ t the hair- it is the dander that causes allergies but dander falls on carpet, bedding etc.
  5. Allergy shots
