Best horse-friendly area to live within 2 hours of Washington DC

Two different people - it seems the the new poster is just looking at anywhere in MD/VA (unless I missed something, and I totally could have!)

Seconding this rec. Both are great people and great riders, and very involved in the local hunt and horse community (John is/was a master) so will have lots of advice on hacking/trails. And his daughter is Sloane Coles, a grand prix rider and show jumping trainer based in the area as well.

Severna Park is a great area. Close to Baltimore and to Annapolis. There’s a paved trail that he can run called like the Baltimore-Annapolis Greenway or something like that. Plenty of people commuting to DC and I think there are metro stops not too far from there. Nice upscale area and lots of barns nearby in Davidsonville and close proximity to PG Eq Center where they do the Cap Challenge and a local circuit called the BEST Horse shows. They probably have one of the better and more competitive local circuits with McDonaugh, BEST, and Blenheim shows all in that region
and MHSA and VHSA are all doable, along with about a 2 hour trip to Culpeper and some other nice VA shows.

On the east coast, you will probably want to look for boarding barns that are full care that will allow you to BYOT (bring your own trainer if you’re looking for 2 separate individuals). However, since you’re doing jumpers and dressage
Maryland is HUGE into 3-Day Eventing, so you should find some decent trainers/pro riders in that region and some that may dabble in strictly dressage or some hunter/lumper shows
and FWIW, Maryland 5* at Fair Hill is an incredible show/event and not one to miss (I think it’s coming up in October). So might not be a bad idea to go check it out and see who is local that’s competing there.

Agree. We live less than a block from the B&A, my husband runs on it daily and I board in Davidsonville. It’s a great area.
