Thank you, SLW!
How much copper and zinc do you add?
Which Zinc/copper product do you use?
This one supplement has made a HUMONGOUS difference in a 20 y/o gelding I took in last November. Horrible hoof wall…crumbly, thin - just a disaster. Last trim I did on him two weeks ago = double thick hoof wall, no more concussion rings, sound.
Depends on how much you need And that depends on the analysis of the whole diet, forage included.
If you don’t have a forage analysis, then a best guess somewhat depends on what, if any, concentrates you’re feeding. Meaning, if it’s a fatty who’s on nothing but hay/grass, then I would add more cu/zn than if it were someone also getting a ration balancer or other fortified feed.
If you have really nothing to go on, then a safe guesstimate would be half a serving of Horesetech’s polysaccharide copper and p-zinc. For those products, that would be 250mg copper and 625mg zinc. Other companies have polysaccharide cu/zn with a slightly different % of the mineral, A half scoop of Uckele’s copper provides 310mg, for example, with each of those being a 2.5gm scoop.
Horsetech, Uckele, Custom Equine Nutrition, Vermont Blend, California Trace, all have them.
My picky fatties love McCauley’s M10 ration balancer.
15 grams each or 1 scoop each of the Uckele Poly Zinc and Poly Copper. I’m a bit obsessive about my feed program and do actually measure it out to the gram. I’ve done the math on how to best balance out the iron in my feed, and water and that’s the result I came out with. My hay tested extremely low for Iron shockingly.
My mare is on Thryro L and the vet recommended Purina Enrich for her needs. It has worked out very well.
