Best SUV for hauling?

I tow a 2018 Boeckmann Portax LK (front side ramp) with a 2018 Audi Q8 (all-wheel) for my 17h warmblood. You barely know you’re towing it is so smooth. Got it from Maple Lane and they’re fabulous to deal with. It may be for sale in the next year if I have to retire my big guy….

I think the expedition max is almost a Ford Valdez

The last thing I would ever do is buy the smallest possible vehicle. Get the safest possible towing combo for your situation. Unless they have changed in the last few years, the towing weights are determined under perfect conditions. Not factoring in live weight, wind, terrain, etc. It also needs to include the passengers and cargo inside the vehicle. A whole lot of people think their 1000 lb horse inside their 3500 lb trailer means they are well under an 8000 lb towing capacity. Unless you are just occasionally driving 30 minutes to a park for a trail ride or to a lesson, get more vehicle than you think you need.

I have a QX80 4wd, it tows 8500lbs. I sold my F250 as it killed my back & I couldn’t get up into it. I tow a Adams BP with dressing room locally with no issues. If I was planning lots of trips through the mountains, I would definitely drive something different.

Don’t ever rely on the dealership to help you with the right vehicle to tow a trailer with. A lot of vehicles can tow a certain tonnage but not a lot do it safely.
One thing that people forget to consider is the wheel base. You see a lot of SUV type vehicles tipped over in accidents…there is a reason for that. I would never pull a horse in a jeep especially in the North East.

I’ve watched a Suburban pulling a two-horse loaded down a decent grade in Harpers Ferry. WV almost got pushed off the road by the wind and live cargo. So scary to watch, I couldn’t imagine being the driver.

If its flat land, you are probably fine but I’ve always been told that pulling with many SUV’s will cause the transmission to give out quicker. It is not if, it’s when the transmission goes.

Thanks everyone for the input.

I’m thinking I’ll get a sequoia (9500lb capacity) with a boeckmann trailer. Thanks so much!!
