I too am unimpressed with the SSG 10 Below gloves. I don’t find them warm at all in the midwest winter, and they’re too bulky for riding. I have had many pairs of SSG gloves that look like ski gloves with fake suede on the palm side. Unfortunately they develop holes and the suede comes unstitched fairly quickly, but they only cost about $10. I have some Ovation gloves that seem to be a new design, I haven’t decided if they are warm enough yet. One problem though is the inner liner and the shell aren’t bound together and sometimes realigning the fingers of the layers has been difficult. Right now I’m trying some $9 gloves from Menards that seem to have a decently tough outer layer and a fake suede palm and between the fingers. They feel like they are thin enough to ride in.
I have lots of Tropical Rider toasties breeches. Usually 2 pairs of long underwear go under them in the winter. Smartwool socks and the foot warmer inserts go inside my Ariat winter boots. I never got my chaps out last winter, but they’re usually my top layer in the coldest part of winter.
