Best Winter insulated coat

I would say “equestrian” to “normal”, definitely not overly generous. It fit great before I put on some pounds. Now it’s a bit snug. It’s the nicest coat I have ever owned, probably.

ETA: waterproofing’s great. Have worn in rain and snow and has kept me dry and warm.

I have the Dover Saddlery Nobscott parka and LOVE it!!! It’s perfect to layer and kept me warm in this latest winter blast that saw temps feeling like negative 30. I took a chance based on reviews and no regrets. Debating buying another when my current one bites the dust, just in case, but it’s holding up great so far in its second winter. And I have horses at home, so hard use!

I have always been told that a hood can strangle you or break your neck in a fall if it gets caught up. That said, I have this coat with a hood that I don’t remove, and wear a mid layer smart wool thing that has a non-removable hood I just tuck in. So, it’s more a disclaimer than anything, since I don’t follow my own advice anyhow.

For this coat specifically, I would remove the hood, but on Uber cold days, I do appreciate it! I just wish it was sized for a helmetless head, as that’s when I am most likely to want to use it. It’s become my go-to not just for the barn, but out and about in Brooklyn. It’s quite stylish. And, as mentioned… super warm and comfy with the lining.

I put a cap with a brim under my hoods otherwise they all fall into my eyes!!

You mean like a baseball cap? I may have to try that! I wish I could just downsize this hood, as the coat is PERFECT in all other respects. Except I guess that I am chubby at present and it’s pretty tight. At least it has the best zipper I have ever seen, so am not worried about my pudge demolishing it. I suppose that if I were skinny again, I would think it’s the perfect coat sans the hood size. It really is lovely.

I have some knit caps with brims. Synthetic yarn but wool like texture. They make a great layer under a hood.

Will have to check those out for “around NYC” and “around the barnyard”. Seriously, though. I do love the coat. The hood is my only objection. I only have self to blame for the extra pounds. So, your tip might help there.

Hey I just wanted to report back that I ordered a Le Mieux Loire coat, 30 per cent off, and it’s gorgeous. I wore it riding in the rain today for the first time. I got size large. It’s a bit snug around the bust, maybe if I’d been shopping in person I’d have tried on an XL, but it’s a nice fit and it kept me warm and dry.

Yay! Mine is also snug across the chest. So glad you like it!!

So I know the OP already found a coat, but I recently bought this one as a barn/riding coat and it is SUPER warm. Almost too warm if the temps are above 40 degrees. It was also very affordable (under $100 depending on color etc.). So if anyone else is looking, this is a good one if you want something warm and cheap! https://amzn.to/3X8wny1

How long is the coat? Do you think it would keep you warm at -20C?

I was looking at the Columbia Women’s Little Si Omni-Heat Infinity parka. Anyone have this jacket? Is it heavy?

I absolutely LOVE the LeMieux winter jackets. I bought one last winter and I never felt cold while riding! It’s not too bulky, and very lightweight! Definitely recommended for riding or barn chores! The price may seem to much at first, but it’s worth the money!
