Bit Ideas For Sensitive Mouthed TB

Don’t take this the wrong way, CPCG, but I suspect OP is looking for more specific recommendations given that she’s tried a French link eggbutt and at least one other double-jointed bit. And it seems a little odd for a kid who’s elsewhere described herself as having little equestrian experience outside of lessons to have enough experience solving contact issues to have meaningful advice to offer on such a tricky problem.

There are a lot of really smart and experienced folks in this forum and you seem intelligent enough to be able to make helpful contributions where your experience allows. But you should also be aware that people sour really quickly on posters whose posting history and implied expertise don’t add up. I’m sure you mean well, but this particular forum doesn’t respond well to poseurs (see the maestro thread for evidence of this).

Also, since you’re posting in a dressage forum, it might be helpful to know that ‘snaffle (not harsh)’ is essentially a given for a horse that’s not yet comfortable in the contact, and that most dressage riders prefer to solve issues through training and would not consider even a difficult horse to ‘need a strong bit’, especially when the goal is confident contact.

As for OP, my fussy mouth horse isn’t an OTTB, but I didn’t find the expensive KK Ultra much more inviting than a cheap stainless steel knock-off lozenge bit, fwiw. My horse’s biggest improvements have come from progress in my own riding, but if I ever do try again to find a bit she hates less the last thing on my to-try list is a Myler.

I have a leather bit from Sweet Billy Bits that i got for restarting a tb mare with bit issues - nicely made and the horse likes it, came promptly and the price is very reasonable.

I have not read the entire thread so I apologize in advance if this has already been said. My horse is a very sensitive Trakehner, he goes in a Nathe loose ring WITH rein aids! It has been a journey but the rein aids allow me to be a bit stronger then he likes but it doesn’t grab him in the mouth… Worked like a charm for me…

I’ve had great luck with the neue schule verbindend and sold it to a customer who had a horse that sounds very much like yours. We have a bit trial program and she tried it and her horse finally was seeking contact with the bit. You can get the verbindend mouthpiece with a loose ring, universal, or D cheek piece.

Lots of good suggestions. I had a bit list like the OP and found the stubben EZ control loose ring to be great for a low palette/thick tongue due to stability. Certainly the riders hand play a major role but I think the bit choice is very important. There are some sensitive souls that just abhor certain bits, even if the riders hands are perfect.

Sherian, which cheek style did you get, and was the leather flat or rolled?

I have the 0 ring with the rolled mouth piece - o ring doesn’t act as a loose ring though, bit sits still so hard to say how much difference there would be between cheek pieces other than aesthetic

Thank you! That’s the one I wanted to try. Good to know that it’s still - I think Reggie will like that better.
