Bit sizing for the double bridle

Is the bradoon you want a loose-ring? If so, 5 3/4 would probably be just fine.

There is only the French link bradoon, the KK Ultra Soft and the Balkenhol bradoon (you could be riding with both Balkenhol and Bemelmans at the same time!!!) who come in 140mm in the HS bit collection.

From Neue Schule (only have loose-ring bradoon): you have the Starter (14mm), the Team up (12mm), the Verbindend (12mm) and the Tranz-angled lozenge (14mm) who comes in 5 1/2.

Stübben has a loose-ring bradoon (#2224 - 11 or 14mm)

What lenght is his snaffle right now? Do you have access to any 5 3/4 bit you could try on to see if the lenght could be correct?

Are you looking for a 10, 12, 14 or 16mm thickness for your bradoon?

What thickness for the weymouth?

(QUESTION : Is it brIdoon or brAdoon? FEI rules say bridoon while HS sprenger say bradoon…)

Can I say that I wish there were bridle and bit fitters just like saddle fitters!

I’m having trouble with my double bridle set up too, and all people can tell me is to try the bit rentals. Or they say, something they really like, but not why, how it works, what their horse’s mouth is like, etc.

I really need a run down of the effects of the different mouth pieces/ports, shanks, and thickness of curbs. Also, what different mouth/lips might be suited to different curb types.

I know this is an older thread but. Does anyone have anything to add? What curb might work best with a fleshy lip low palate horse?

I just started wading into these murky waters some time ago - but I followed my instructor’s advice, which is the same as what 2tempe and MysticOak said: the curb needs to be snug. With that in mind- we tried some of her bits on my horse; she had quite a few we could try. My horse’s daily snaffle is a 6" Herm Sprenger Ultimate KK. My instructor’s 5 1/2" curb was too big. Her 5" curb was too big.
My horse ended up needing a 4 3/4" curb - thankfully Neue Scheule makes one in that size. His mouth tapers quite a bit
So - from this experience, I would say the best bet is to try them on and that you can’t rely entirely on formulas. I would never have guessed that my boy would need such a small curb when he takes such a long snaffle.
