Bitting up from a Pelham?

Helpful thread!

So funny - after yesterday’s hunt I am in the exact same position of trying to think of what bit to use to try and get some small amount of control. The galloping is just too exciting, and we had the fastest hunt yesterday. I was just getting run off with. I was using a gag with a rubber mouth jointed mouthpiece. I’m going to try a Pelham with two reins on Saturday. (trying it at home first today and tomorrow, but you never really know until they get galloping with the group if you will have brakes or not!)

This thread gives me several ideas of things to try - thanks everyone!

Hopefully they won’t run away together Saturday, Daatje!

Hi Finn’s Mom!

So the hunt Wednesday was faster than last Saturday? Wow. This is a great thread with some great responses, thanks everyone!

I’m going to set up a few different things to try, in combo with being more on my toes when the run gets going and not letting her motor on without some immediate input.

Not saying it would work for all horses, but I hunt my 6yo TB gelding in a Waterford D-Ring. He (and I!) love it - he tends to stay more on his haunches and will rarely bear down on the bit… if he does, a couple of half-halts gets him right back up where he needs to be!

Just back from a hunt to report. I take a bow to those who suggested that I sit up and half halt. I focused on that today, in conjunction with getting off the curb rein and the mare caught on quickly. She was fantastic! So, the Pelham stays, I just have to ride better and it’s all good!

Lol. Funny how riding better always seems to help.
