I have one of these, which honestly I’ve never used. It’s super light. On sale now for $207.
@StormyDay
Thanks for the idea on the Rambo Summer Series. Put a 100gm liner under it last night and my PSSM guy was perfectly warm this morning. It was 50 degrees last night and he walks stiff in the morning after those temps. Pulled it for a sunny and 80 degree day but great for cool overnights.
Most of mine are like this on the first few chilly mornings in the fall, every year. The young ones adapt quickly, but I do find it takes the older (mid teens +) mares a bit longer to toughen up. It - for obvious reasons - also gets much better once they get a bit more coat growth going later in the season.
Like you, I leave for work too early to do much good by tossing a sheet on one overnight (though I will do that if it is raining). I find that even my most sensitive mare usually stops shivering by the time she finishes her breakfast grain. I’ll toss them a flake of hay each, too, on these chilly mornings. That seems to warm them up more quickly than grazing does, for whatever reason.

These are great sheets for a bit of warmth, but vented so they don’t overheat (at least mine haven’t in the few years I’ve used them).
My mini started the same type of shivering about a year or so before he was diagnosed as metabolic. Once we got that sorted out the shivering improved quite a bit but did not resolve. I have to put a sheet on him when it’s below 50.
You mentioned he gets jumpy. Peanut did too. I’d touch him and he’d bounce his hind end straight up and down like he was on springs. DH calls it the “humpy-bump” and that’s how he judges when Peanut is in need of a blanket.
Interesting. He’s on Heiro, but once the weight came off of him and he wasn’t really super fat anymore, it seemed like everything had improved and all symptoms had gone away. Maybe it isn’t so, and this will be forever.
That’s ok, he’s worth any and all trouble.
I have a couple sheets that are lined in the most important areas https://www.horseware.com/en-us/rambo-summer-series-turnout-disc-front-0g-light, but mesh everywhere else. Or, you could create one using a light liner https://www.horseware.com/en-us/horseware-waterproof-fly-sheet-liner-0g-light
Also, check out Snuggy Hoods
Horseware also has this Amigo sheet, which looks like the same design as the Rambo, but without the liner.
I thought I might managed not to buy any blankets this year, but thanks to this thread, I think I’m going to grab one of these. https://www.horseware.com/en-us/horseware-amigo-ameco-combi-0g-light?nosto=categorypage-nosto-2-fallback-nosto-1
I have a KoolCoat Airstream in I think a 78 if that would be of interest to the OP (or anyone else). They run large.
This guy is a solid 72, unfortunately. thank you though!
I don’t have any facts to back this up but many years ago an old vet told me that shivering is just a mechanism for the body to warm up and nothing to worry about.
