boarding in houston

Hi,
I have one soon to be 2 horses. They are multi talented, doing dressage and hunters. I am pretty new to the area, but am really frustrated!

I had posted b4 about getting changes put on one of them (thank you for responding)… I checked with one (who is gone to florida) and will follow up with another; it may be more permenant of a need. The barn we are at- I specifically told the owner that I was getting one or two more horses. After numerous promises to hold a stall- well the dollar won out and the barn is full with a waiting list (sigh). I have a horse being vetted right now and shipping down from east coast after the blizzard.

We live West of the city, think “katy” area. With the “new” highway 99, it is easier to manuver to Tomball and other places up that way but I have no idea what is up or over there…

Ideal:
-a couple rings, one that doesn’t have fences set up in it all year (hard to do a half pass with a fence in the way).
-Trainer there that has proven ability to put changes on a horse in a short time frame (the horse is nearly there, so it’s not a green thing)
-near trails or not landlocked facility- can go out and ride around - maybe a xcountry course?
-not really looking for a “clubby” barn- I work full time and don’t have the time to spend going to “barn” events (sorry if that sounds odd, but where we are now, it’s kind of - OOO let’s all get together for …)

  • it would be cool to be able to jump without having to be in a lesson. Not talking GIANT fences but cavalettis…
-Turnout with a pasture that actually is growing grass and not weeds (looks green but on closer inspection, there is no grass at all and horses just stand around miserable).

I’d like a money tree, a string of Grand Prix jumpers and Derby hunters, a pair of grooms to drive my horses and RV whilst I fly from show to show, and a perfect manicure all of the time.

Anyone else?

My sister is at this barn and is happy. It has most of your requirements.

Lower your standards a smidge. This isn’t the East Coast, this is Texas. There aren’t hoards of great trainers here. There are some really good ones, but here they aren’t so abundant as other places. Meaning the good ones are far too busy to be catering to one person.

Two come to mind, both close by in Tomball, easy to get to from Richmond/Katy.

Tex-Over farms, dressage with an event trainer, a good mix for you it sounds like, jump lessons available but not the total emphasis.

Berry Porter at Lanes End, amazing guy, hunter and jumper based, a very talented trainer, he can install lead changes, but he is quick to dish out tough love style training/advice. Good facility.

I know of a place that meets most of your requirements sans the jumping alone. There is a nice place to ride out on the property but no cross country course. PM if you would like more information.

Brian Powell is in Conroe TX. The barn is not fancy but the stalls are huge and everyone gets daily turnout. You can trail ride after a brief ride down a quiet road.

He is a hunter/jumper trainer with a strong dressage background. His jumpers are trained up through PSG.
