Boddy protectors in hunters?

I wear a vest pretty much every time I ride now. I have an Airowear (fairly bulky) that I wear at shows and in the winter when it’s cold, and a purple Tipperary that I wear at home. With both its quite obvious that I’m wearing one! I have had a few bad falls and I just don’t need a repeat of broken ribs and collapsed lung. I used to show jump, and now I’m in an eventer barn, and I ride in both h/j shows and at events.

I’m the only one at my barn who wears a vest all the time, even though I get comments from some of the adults that I’m smart to wear one. The eventers pretty much only gear up for xcountry. The vests are far more comfortable than I had imagined. The biggest downside is they can be hot in the summer.

I even wear mine when I go to h/j shows. I used to never see vests at h/j shows, but now you do sometimes see them being worn - and sometimes I see only the air vests. I really don’t care if anyone thinks I’m odd for wearing it. Sometimes people ask me about my vest, like if it bothers me, and I’m happy to provide feedback. Too bad I never wore one before my accidents, I might have avoided a couple of long hospital stays.

I wear mine every ride. I have had some bad falls and I don’t bounce any more. I have worn mine at the rated shows too. I would get my hunt coats fitted over my vest.

Thanks, BAC. I do appreciate your comments.

This thread came at a very appropriate time! I had someone bring in a real nice slim tipperary on consignment in my tack shop. I thought about buying it myself. I’ve just started getting my horse back into work after the winter off and its been a bit scary…you guys have convinced me! I’m buying that vest. I know I will have more peace of mind wearing it and even though he rarely gets me off now as I know all his tricks in the off chance he does the fall hopefully won’t hurt as much.

I actually tried to get a coat to fit over my vest, but even with a coat bigger than my normal size, I looked like the hunchback of Notre Dame. I couldn’t make it work, so I just decided to wear it over my coat. Your experience may be different.

Totally hunched backed it! I do think you look very elegant in the picture you shared. I showed for mileage so maresy could see different places and to get a gauge of how well she and I were progressing. If I showed because I love showing I would have opted for a show vest as well. I get way to anxious and worked up at shows for it to be enjoyable. Once in a while is fine. Also, my hunt coat is an older Melton so maybe with the new tech fabrics it’s different.

I have a friend who wears one. She’s very slender, so she wears it under her coat. I don’t know that she has specific concerns based on having been hurt in the past, but wearing it makes her much more confident! I wonder if there is enough of a H/J market that someone would make an “integrated” model that looks like a coat?

There is one already! https://www.helite.com/air-show-coat-for-the-circuit Erynn Ballard wore something like this a few years back. It’s an airvest, not the hard body protector though.

The CoTH article about her in her vest (complete with pics) inspired me to get my shadbelly.
