FWIW, I noticed my horse was holding in his back again, and did shockwave yesterday. Will be curious to see the results.
Lunabear thank you for your kind words.
This has and continues to be such a rough road. I take one step forward and 5 back. Riding’s not fun anymore, it’s a chore. Horsekeeping…is just something I do. It’s not much fun to have all the expense and worry and very little of the joy.
I will say today’s work was better. Something I stumbled upon and tried with her is working, and she’s actually ‘getting’ it! And is actively seeking it. Which is huge since it means she’s allowing herself to come thru her back all the way to her nose.
@greywithchrome I understand the tense and rushy part! I find with my girl, S-L-O-W it down works best. When she starts rushing the brain goes out the window and all bets are off. I really find the exercise in Simon Cocozza’s book are very helpful. She seems to like them, and I use them not only to help but as a reward for giving me a good try in the harder stuff.
I have this book! Will have to do another read through now that she’s back under saddle.
I understand the feelings. I do hope that you will come out the other side with a horse that feels fabulous. I still think that it’s a little early to tell from what I know about SI stuff. Hopefully if you just continue on the path, even if rocky at times, she will get better.
I’m going to have to look into that book! I keep hearing good things.
I scheduled another appt for shockwave. This Friday, Dec 2. I was doing some googling and most of what I read indicates several treatments roughly 2-3 weeks apart. Vet didn’t mention any of that to me. Noticed this morning while grooming she seemed sore on her left side. After reading, I figured it was worth a phone call. At this point, my number one goal is to keep this mare as pain free as possible while I build up her strength and her correctness.
So!
Yes I’ve always been told two or three sessions is the gold standard for shockwave. Fingers crossed that that keeps you guys on a good path and pain-free!!
I think the time between depends on the structure. 1 week is common for some things, and I think we did longer intervals than that… 3-4 weeks? for my horse’s scapula fracture. But a lot of times for backs, they just do one session? Which seems weird to me. Although backs are expensive.
Friday 12/2. I didn’t grab my phone fast enough but she was definitely NQR tracking right on the lunge, at a trot. I caught some of it tho. Anyhow, I did hop on for a bit. She was okay but not super happy. We had a vet visit scheduled for the afternoon, so off we went. Vet did a thorough check, had me lunge her both ways several times. Felt the SI’s and there was no flinching or other. Her back tho, yes sore which is why I had scheduled the appt. Anyhow, after all that we discussed options and vet said to me she felt our best bang for buck was injections & mesotherapy. She used 2 different lengths of needles, and a steroid + sarapin. Went up and down the length of her back both sides.
And now I’m back to a week off, a week no tack lunging, then under saddle. Vet wants me to try using the EquiCore again. I’ve used this setup before and honestly I never saw anything telling me ‘yes keep doing this’. But I will try again. Maybe now that her SI has been addressed and a new protocol with the back injections…?
Sigh.
