The behavior you describe may very well be training related. You could try to retrain your horse for the ramp by blocking the ability to go sideways and step up/down. Some patience…and a large bag of carrots from Costco…might do the trick. And it’s a lot cheaper than buying a new trailer. Ideally, you want any horse to be willing to mount and dismount any trailer, especially in an emergency.[/QUOTE]
I agree, and it is definitely something I want to work on, but I do not have a trailer currently. She will eventually get on a ramp trailer, but has a “I’ll do it myself” mindset that if I block the sides, push her over, etc, she becomes more obnoxious and it prolongs our trailer loading, along with the next few times I try to get her on. Using a chute results in the same behavior. Going head first, she has no problem walking down a ramp. It’s just going backwards.
I didn’t begin her trailer loading experience, I know from a baby she was used to step ups. So I’m not sure if shes just stubborn or what, but she likes the step ups. I like the ramps. We just disagree
