Bracelets vs arm bands

It depends on how much history/how many conditions you have, I suppose. I listed ICE numbers, my name, birth year, blood type, and allergies, which constitutes the entirety of my medical history. And it’s all right there on the bracelet.

It sounded to me from the correspondence I had with USEA that they will probably end up amending the rule to do away with the online requirement, because organizers seem to be getting hung up on that and because in many cases the bracelets contain everything that’s required.

Fers, here was Abbe’s response to your inquiry:
"Message from Susan Farmer, Abbe Ranch

To Riders entered at Abbe Ranch HT,
I have been admonished by USEA and USEF for doing what I thought was the right thing.
In my hurry to inform riders of important matters that they should know ahead of time before they arrive, I used the wrong words to describe our safety situation. And I need to restate that for your safety, the Larkspur Fire Department, EMT and Abbe Ranch are requesting that everyone wear the USEA medical arm band even though you wear the medical bracelet. You do have the choice of wearing one or the other according to the rules of eventing. We however are worried that the bracelets, which as far as we can find out, need to get information about you from websites. Our cell phone access is very poor. (Maybe there is gold interfering with communication in our hills.)
In my opinion, it would have been better for a rider to explain to us why they had to wear the bracelet only, instead of both bracelet and arm band, than to waste the time of USEA, USEF and others. I agree that I should not have said requiring or not be allowed.
I am sorry for the misunderstanding, because of my poor choice of words, but not for my interest in your safety.

I really don’t think your inquiry to USEA was necessary. The owners/orchestrator of Abbe are elderly and work their butt off to put on this HT. Area 9 has already lost Rocky Mountain as a HT this year (and possibly several more). I hope this doesn’t push the Farmers over the edge as well.

Fergs, glad you sent an inquiry to USEA.

I didn’t put any of that (except ICE) on my bracelet because the directions for accessing the other info needed to fit (I got a RoadID rather than RideSafe). Not an issue for my currently local events, b/c there’s good cell/internet at our CHP. Maybe I’ll spring for a second badge.

Wow. I’m kind of amazed that my inquiry about organizers’ discretion regarding USEF rules could have ruffled feathers this way. (Oddly, I didn’t receive that follow-up e-mail from Susan Farmer. . . I wonder why?)

I certainly didn’t intend for the organizers to be admonished! I just wanted to know whether it was okay for a standing rule to be changed at the whim of the organizers. It didn’t seem like a waste of time; it took me five minutes to compose the email, and I received a quick, helpful reply the next morning.

What would we think as competitors if we were told the week before the event that we couldn’t use a running martingale or something?

ETA that the USEA contacted the USEF for clarification, not me. If competitors asking rules questions and having the USEA contact organizers to clarify matters leads to losing events, then I find that to be pretty scary!
