Braids and bows, or hair net and hair up in helmet?

Age-wise, or look of maturity, when should young girls on ponies make the change? Do judges think the braids and bows are distracting?

My daughter switched once she was out of the short stirrup and doing rated ponies, I think around10/11

Coincidentally, I happened to see a display of bows in a tack shop window the other day which reminded me of this thread.
