Brands of heavy weight winter blankets? 450+gram fill

Thanks @fourfillies I forgot about those! A client did have one a few years ago and it seemed great (but fit large if I recall correctly?)

@Simkie Her BR has the similar idea to the Vari-Layer, but a 500. Static guard is what my client uses, but I really hate spraying chemicals in the barn as I am chemical sensitive, but that is an option, and might be what I do. She has pretty much free choice hay when cold (unless it blows away), but she won’t always leave her shelter to eat, and I don’t want to feed her in the shelter as then I don’t think she will share the space with her buddy. I just want her to be warm enough the odd cold snap, that she will venture out. She and the other chestnut that come inside, have very little hair this year: I have no idea why and it is not normal for either of them, so maybe a 400 plus a liner for these odd cold snaps make sense?

I am not liking climate change.

What does BR mean?

Lightly spraying with water might be effective enough for the static.

How about hanging a hey net in the shed? Totally get but wanting to feed in there, but if you can keep her intake up, that might solve this problem.

Yes, the fit on the Premier rug is generous, but not enough to size down. My Rambo 81” guy is fine in the Premier 81”.

@Simkie I think if a hay net was in the shelter, then she would keep her buddy out of the shelter. Without food to protect she is fine sharing.

BR is the brand of blanket. BR Equestrian. They don’t seem to make the blanket that I have anymore though.

The Rambo liners can get staticky. You can spray some diluted healthy haircare spray of something like that on the horse lightly before putting the liner on.

Last year my guy thought Colorado was far too cold and I would sometimes have him in 500g fill (200 blanket with 300 liner). He wasn’t clipped. Never got too hot or sweaty. And I don’t think we even got into the negatives much. I don’t really like dealing with cleaning heavy blankets so I do like the liner system. Especially if it doesn’t stay that cold for very many days.

Have you considered the Greenhawk Pagoda quilted liner? It’s a 400gm “over the head” blanket with a belly band. I love mine. It only gets pulled out when he’s clipped, or if we’re around-30C.
It fits my horse well enough that I don’t even bother with leg straps, and since there aren’t any front closures it isn’t bulky.

Yesterday I noticed that someone on Facebook was selling theirs. They put it on their horse for this cold snap and the horse was sweating.

Ah, thank you! I’ve never heard of them!

I do think it would be worthwhile to figure out some way to keep food in front of her face all the time, where ever she insists on standing. Digestion is SUCH a big part of keeping them warm.

If she is still getting cold with a heavy weight blanket - and if she’s clipped- that’s certainly possible -
you might have to resign yourself to layering. I know what you’re saying about static - something that seems to work well for me is the Schneiders Teknofleece stable blanket - which actually makes a great liner. . . I use the 1200 denier one. It has a layer of fleece between the inner liner and outer shell and a tough 1200 denier outer shell - which at least in my experience - seems to be free of static.
I have an aged metabolic mare who has to be kept thin or she gets bouts of laminitis so she has no layer of winter fat at all. She stays cozy with the teknofleece stable blanket under her 220 gram turnout with a matching neck cover (which also has 220 grams of fill.)
The teknofleece stable blanket is not terribly expensive - about $130 if memory serves, and it comes in handy in the spring too when you don’t need the heavy warmth - you can throw a turnoutsheet over it too. Best of luck.

Thanks for the recommendation! They are actually on sale right now, so I might order one of the bellyband ones!

If throwing a turnout blanket over a heavy stable is an option, Schneider’s makes a heavy stable with a belly band (and neck option, if you’d like). I have the belly band and non belly band version for my guy, and his turnout goes over top. He likes quite a bit of cover for overnight turnout in Canadian winter, and is currently wearing a heavy over a heavy.

Schneider’s also has different cut blankets for different shaped horses, so take a look around their site! I’ve had really good luck with their stable blankets, but no experience with their turnouts.

Good luck!

It’s surprising how much warmth even a light liner will provide. I don’t get really freezing conditions where I am, but a really cold wind will cause the blanket to flap around a bit and let the warm air escape. A light liner stops this from happening. That’s why adding a sheet over a blanket will also add warmth, because it allows the blanket underneath to trap the warm air against the coat.
