Breastplates: Favorites, pros/cons, and where to buy

I like the CWD breastplates that attach to the girth rather than the dees at the top of the saddle. They’re less bulky than 5 points but work in a similar fashion, and in my opinion are more effective than those that just attach to dees.

Mark Todd an Nunn Finer both have a similar one at a lower price point.

I never use a 5 point unless I actually need the breastplate to keep a saddle from slipping back. I have a couple Antares (non-elastic) and Dyon that I absolutely love!

Quality tack is worth the price; it lasts so much longer.

I just got the D’yon working breastplate. It’s buffalo and since I will be using it daily thought that was a better option to go with for the price, plus it came with the running attachment and yoke:

Total was around $250 USD shipped to the states.

I love my Horze breastplate! It’s great quality especially for the price. It has fancy stitching too so it matches the rest of my tack and has easy snaps to attach to the saddle which was a huge factor for me.

How long did it take to ship and arrive to you? I’ve been looking at this breastplate, but I’m having trouble justifying the cost on the ones you buy here.

I ordered it on June 22 and it arrived July 2.

Thank you everyone for your responses! The Nunn Finer one looks very similar to the Devoucoux but is within the budget. I will most likely try that! A friend at my barn has a similar one but without the elastic that I can try on for sizing. Thanks again.

I have one from Five Star that is very similar to the Nunn Finer one, but I don’t believe Five Star is making that style anymore  though I do believe they’ve got one that attaches to the girth like the CWD one mentioned above. I’m quite happy with it; I use it for eventing and local jumper shows. It has held up beautifully, and cleans up quite nicely, I like the elastic inserts as the owner of a big-shouldered horse to allow as much range of motion as she needs. For the price I’d definitely recommend them.

Thanks everyone for the help! I ended up getting this one from Bit Of Britain. http://www.bitofbritain.com/Bellissmo_Fancy_Stitched_Hunting_Breastplate_by_N_p/5095-5100.htm

The only problem I have now is that the running attachment that came with it is far too short. It is adjusted as loose as it goes AND I added a snap to it to make it longer. The snap helped, gave about an inch extra room plus easy on and off, but it was still too short. And I could really tell once the jumps were 3’9 and higher that my horses needed more room. I thought of just added an additional leather loop thing and the snap, but the attachment is raised and splits, so the V part of it wouldn’t be able to allow the individual ends to go on either side of my horses neck…if that makes sense.

Does anyone know where to get a longer running attachment? I tried smartpak with no luck :/. There are a few on Dover but I can’t tell which one will work.

I use the oxyclean laundry spray on my Antares, then I spray the elastic with scotch guard! Works great, and grime wipes off for months until it needs a new application of scotch guard. Warning though-when you first spray scotchguard on, you will see little white flakes for a short amount of time. I think it’s the excess coming off the moving elastic. 2 rides later, I never notice it. I love my Antares, and think it really looks classy. They do run big though. I ended up taking mine to a local leather repair and having it shortened by 2" on each side for a custom fit. I also had some keepers added to the chest piece for the excess leather.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Five Star Tack breastplate!! Affordable, great quality, very classy looking ( I get a TON of compliments on it) and did I say affordable???

I have the Signature elastic one, but they have a lovely all leather one that attaches to the girth if you like that option better.

And even better, they give back to the community through their Bridles With Benefits program, in terms of donations to the Breast Cancer research foundation, Alex’s Lemonade stand, CANTER, Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue, and more.

I ilke knowing that what I buy for my horse helps other horses, and people, too.

Nunn Finer works well. I use the Hunting Breastplate with elastic. I also like the 5 way but it can be a bit trickier to get the right fit. I definitely prefer the type of breastplate that has a strap that comes over the wither area. It adds a bit of security if you need to grab hold!

This… but I have the non-elastic one. Like it better. http://www.nunnfiner.com/Nunn-Finer-Hunting-Breastplate-p/47.htm

The elastic one just didn’t seem to fit my guy correctly, for some reason. I don’t use it often (XC) and if he’s had some time off and I need an “oh shit” strap.

I have a Five Star Tack bridge breastplate. It is gorgeous! It has so much adjustability and the leather is the nicest I’ve seen for the price. It has lots of padding, fancy stitching and elastic inserts for give. I like this style better than the clunkiness of the five points. http://fivestarbridles.com/breastplates.html
