Breeches: what are your affordable schooling faves?

I thought the buckwild breeches and tights looked interesting so I emailed them to ask about their hip sizes in inches, but I think they gave me waist sizes unless they our extremely stretchy. They are having a 30% off sale on black Friday.

Hi Judith,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us!

Here would be the size in inches -

M - 26" - 28"
L - 28" - 30"
XL - 32" - 34"

They do offer a great amount of stretch and are extremely comfortable! These will be going on Sale (30% Off) for Black Friday. If you would like to get a pair now, just let me know and I will send you a coupon code so that you can have the sale price now. : )http://buckwildbreeches.com

Thanks!

A horse is like a best friend. They`re always there to nuzzle you and make your life a better place.

I love my Montar breeches. I have a few pair. They cover my hips, have a rise made for a woman not a boy, and are not too hot in FL. Seem to wear well also. I have been wearing two pair for over a year and they still look good. They run a generous true to size. https://thehorseofcourse.com/cart.php?target=category&category_id=136#sortBy=translations.name&sortOrder=asc&pageId=2

I own a pair of the Buckwild and I agree theya re well made. However I am not a fan of the silicone seat. I wear them with my little Luso who does not have much back movement; I can’t wear them with the big moving guy. They DO make some with just plain seats.
I like the Montars (above) much better.

Yes those are waist sizes for the buckwilds. They do stretch quite a bit to fit. I have seen string beans in them, and hippy girls (my DD and me), and they seem to fit both well.

The montars look nice but don’t seem to come big enough for me :frowning:

Are they full seats, MJ? I remember hearing about the brand and how loved they were, but I have never seen them.
I have a couple pair of full seats. I prefer the extended knee patch that goes WAY up the leg.

With as much real estate as I have, don’t need all THAT stuck to my saddle… Just saying.

Hey keysfins,

I was dressing for my lesson this morning and put on a pair of USG breeches that reminded me of this thread, because they sit just below my belly button, fit in a tidy way but not skin tight on my non-willowy figure, and seem true to their waist size. I picked them up last time I was in Germany, and like them way way more than some of the other less-expensive German brands (e.g. HKM) or American budget breeches. The ones I have are a classic cut and style (plain, sturdy herringbone fabric with a slightly darker seat). Looks like this brand’s styles run the gamut from traditional to bedazzled, so this may or may not be a useful brand recommendation. Figured I’d post it since it came to mind, though!

Ovation breeches run $70-$90 at Dover, depending on full seat vs knee patches vs Euro Seat. They also have a pull-on Euro Seat model for under $60. The ones I have tried seem to hold up pretty well, although I don’t put in near the hours in them the OP does.

I had the extended patch on some of my Tropical Riders, and I like that style, too. I am really regretting that I sold or passed those TRs on. :frowning:

Thanks for thinking of me!

I think Kittybee on eBay must have the USGs, and I’ll have to look, but KL Select may, as well.

Sounds like the HKMs are not what I am looking for? I had thought about them, too, but will look at the USGs.

You beat me to it! I agree that the Montar breeches sound exactly like what the OP is looking for. I bought a couple pair earlier this year and the quality is excellent. They are conservatively cut in terms of rise (which is actually my only complaint, sigh. Low rise breeches hit me right below my natural waist so these are unfortunately too high for me to be truly comfortable for my body shape.)

OP, happy to measure mine for you - they are 30s so I can give you specs on them if that helps!

Sure, measurements would definitely help. Thanks!

No problem. Here they are!

Waist, unstretched: 14.5"
Rise: 11"
Inseam: 28.5"

They are the cutest breeches and very well made. I wish they made a low rise version (which would be a normal rise for me!) But if you like a regular rise, they may be perfect. Let me know if you need other measurements; I know how hard it is to find the perfect fit!!

I have a similar pair of USGs–brown herringbone with a dark brown seat. I love them and I think they are very attractive. I often wear them for schooling shows or clinics.

Schooling breeches for the older working student: what are your favorites, and why?

I usually wear FITS full seats with the deerskin seats. I’m a working student, so I need breeches that are durable, supportive and neat.

I bought some FITS Treads for the heat and humidity in Florida last winter season. I like them, they are light and cool, but I am not entirely thrilled with the ink dot seat. (I made the mistake of washing some towels with them, and the ink dots are now a little bit fuzzy from the towels.) Happy to try non-leather seats, tho.

Love the ease of a pull-on, as long as it isn’t thin, baggy or sheer, as some of the more affordable breeches/tights can be. Sizing: can wear a medium or large, waist 30-ish, depending on cut. Wear a size 10 in most street clothes, I have hips, cannot do low-rise, and I am not in my 20s anymore. Or my 40s, for that matter.

Favorite schooling breeches that are still nice enough to look professional? Please tell me about the different Kerrits versions, Irideon, Romfh, etc. There are too many options!
If you like FITS then try their Free Flex style. Love them!

For a heat friendly pant besides jeans, look at stuff by Columbia and north face. Lots f breathable tech pants that can also look smart. I’ve got a fabulous pair of super lightweight Columbia pants that were nice enough to wear as business casual.
What about a nice crisp pair of khaki shorts and a polo for barn work in the heat? Thankfully our barn is usually empty in the mornings and I can beat the summer heat and humidity by mucking in my moisture wicking running tights and tank tops. Definitely not professional looking!

Keys- Equine and Country from the UK comes to Wellington in the winter and keeps their UK pricing on Pikeurs. You can try them on there. After years of wearing crappy breeches, my schooling breeches are Tailored Sportsman (I have never paid more than $80 because I found them on clearance and on ebay) and Pikeur through Equine and Country, so less than $150. I am never, ever going back to cheap breeches that pill and sag and practically shine a spotlight on my worst areas.

Where in Wellington are they located? May be worth a visit.

The WEF showgrounds. I’d send them an email to check their 2017 schedule to see if they are planning on going again this year.
