Breeders' Cup 2006

So many story lines to the BC Classic and so many “battles” - the Lava Man (“Blue Colar”) vs. Bernardini (“Royal owned”) was attempted to be played up but I think the grudgematch of Coolmore’s George Washington vs. Godolphin (essentially) Bernardini is pretty interesting too …

DRF 11-1-06 “Racing’s royalty take off the gloves”

excerpt:

This is Magnier, arguably the most powerful man in Ireland, the proprietor of Coolmore Stud and Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle training center, and the owner of George Washington, the best horse in Europe, vs. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the unquestioned authority in Dubai, the commander-in-chief of Godolphin, Darley, and Gainsborough, and the owner of Bernardini, the best horse in the United States.

More than a horse race, this is a grudge match of epic proportions between Magnier’s dark blue colors and Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley maroon and white. Think medieval joust with lances unsheathed.

But King John [Magnier] was not laughing at the Keeneland September sales two months ago, when Sheikh Mohammed, his pockets bulging with petrodollars, outbid the Magnier team on every single yearling of mutual interest.

Magnier got some back when George Washington slammed Godolphin’s Librettist into sixth place when winning the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on Sept. 24, but the Breeders’ Cup Classic is an even bigger fish to fry. Magnier knows from experience that victory in the Classic, or even a near miss like that of Giant’s Causeway in 2000, can add substantially to a European horse’s stud value. To do so at the expense of Sheikh Mohammed’s Bernardini would would double the Irishman’s fun, and return the smile to his face.

Worth a peek …BloodHorse 11/1/06 “BC Classic Post Position Analysis: Anatomy of a Theft”

Also, in case he was potentially getting ignored (goodness he shouldn’t be!) that would be a fatal mistake:

ESPN/Bill Finley 11-2-06 “Don’t forget about Invasor”

Invasor has had three starts in the U.S. this year, all of them in Grade I’s. He won all three. Even so, Lava Man has had the better year. He is 7-for-7 and has won three Grade I races, including the Charlie Whittingham Handicap on the turf. He is a very good horse and I have all the respect in the world for him. But he just isn’t as fast as Invasor is.

On any speed figures you want to look at, Beyer figures, Ragozin sheets, Thoro-Graph, Invasor is a significantly faster horse than Lava Man is. His two best Beyer numbers this year are a 113 and a 111. Lava Man ran a 113 in the Santa Anita Handicap, but hasn’t cracked a 109 since.

Thanks Spurt…

it was miserable today wasn’t it?

I bet Prado didn’t look too pretty after the fall? But at least it would have been a soft landing in all that mud.

I saw Brother Derek in May and he was one big hunk. Gorgeous. So if he doesn’t look as good as he did then? Hmmm.

Not a fan of Bobby, never will be and for his comment below I only hope that much more that Lava Man brings his A game to the Classic.

San Diego Union Tribune Nov 2 “Frankel: Lava Man has ‘got no shot’”

“He’s got no shot,” Frankel said. “Bernardini, if he runs his race, will win it. The numbers are much better on Bernardini, and I go by the numbers. I’m a numbers guy.”

Of course if folks forget Lava Man was claimed and the one guy that won’t forget that is the man who lost the claim for him at $50k: LA Times 11-2-06 “The big one that got away”
excerpt:

When [Lonnie Arterburn] risked Lava Man for $50,000 in a 2004 claiming race at Del Mar, the 3-year-old gelding had won only three of 12 races.

Now Lava Man is the highest-earning former claimer in history, with $3,804,706 going into the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday.

Arterburn isn’t sure he’ll even have his television on.

“It’s pretty painful to watch,” he said.

Keep posting. I lurk because I play the ponies a bit and find alot of insight on here that has paid off nicely.

Unfortunately I will be out of town this Saturday and will not be wagering…and the BC is a bettors nightmare with alot of good ones and no sure things.
Last time it was at Churchill I did VERY well after noticing the somewhat heavy track was favoring those placed outside in the gate. Hit a #13/#14 boxed $2 exacta…I think one was Tikanen. It was awhile back.

Were I to play, I would use PD in an exotic for the Classic (along with everybody else) with several going at shorter odds as he usually hits the board but rarely wins. I hope Lava Man but think Bernardini.

No excuses about conditions this year…it should be cool and dry. It stopped raining last night with no more forecast.

I’ll try to watch some of it and schedual myself better next year;)

Dawn at the Downs was nice.

They took Bernardini out for the first time after his arrival. His trainer was leading him off a pony horse and they proceded slowly to the finish line. Bernardini then was stopped and turned around to look at everything. He was calm as can be enjoying the sights, LOL. Boy is he muscled up.

He then proceded for a jog without the pony and a slow gallop during which the exercise rider was practicing lead changes  . It was beautiful to watch. They also went into the gate once and back to the barns it was.

I will post some pictures of the horses I got on camera later on today.

Please dont stop posting about the breeders cup!!! i read the racing board every day i get onto COTH (which is most days) and im not generally reading the barbaro thread (i take a peek to see whats up but im on to read the rest of the racing stories)

Just some unknown cutie that was getting into the picture

The front page of USA Today [Friday Nov 3rd] has an article on the Breeders’ Cup and nice picture of Lava Man there.

USA Today 11-3-06 “Blue-collar horse now takes on the blue bloods”

Also the same type of story from the NYT …
New York Times 11-3-06 “Lava Man, From the Poor Side of the Paddock, Takes on the Bluest of Bloods”

“We’re trying to make him feel as much at home as possible,” O’Neill said. “I know we have a lot to prove, and people are justified to be skeptical of a Cal-bred who has not done much outside of California. But you think about how much we got him for, and what he has done so far, and there is no way me or any of the owners can be disappointed by Lava Man.”

Nobody knows better than [co-owner, Steve Kenly] that Lava Man has outrun his purchase price.

“I’ve been handicapping and studying horses for a long time, and I know on paper Bernardini looks like a freak and should run away with it,” Kenly said. “But it sure feels like Lava Man should win. He’s been looking the best horses in the eye now all year, and then separating himself from them. Everyone wants to believe in fairy tales, and I’d like to think Lava Man can write the perfect ending to this one.”

Not everyone is on the fairy tale train leaving Saturday …

Et tu brute?

Joe Drape LA Daily News 11-3-06 “Lava Man’s flow will stop”

The Californian in me wants to predict Lava Man is about to embarrass everybody who insinuates his competition at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar isn’t as strong as the Eastern horses’, and those who think an ex-claimer son of Slew City Slew is ipso facto inferior to a classic-winning son of A.P. Indy.

But Bernardini just looks too good. It looks like Wait 'Til Next Year for Lava Man. …

AP 11-3-06 “Irishman O’Brien owns strong hand in Breeders’ Cup”

excerpts

Saturday, he takes another shot at the Classic with George Washington, an Irish-bred colt named for the American president. George, as O’Brien calls him, was bred by Americans Roy and Gretchen Jackson, who own Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro.

“Most of the American people will disregard him,” said O’Brien, wearing a navy jacket with ‘Georgous George’ in script on the back.

Another European star, David Junior, is among George Washington’s rivals in the 13-horse field, with even-money favorite Bernardini, Lava Man and Argentine-bred Invasor getting all the attention.

George Washington could have entered the Mile and been a short-priced favorite, but co-owners John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith relished the challenge of the 1 1/4-mile Classic on the dirt.

“It’s a step into the unknown,” O’Brien said. “Anything is possible with this horse. We know we’ve never had a horse with ability like his.”

“I can’t tell you the gears and ability this horse has,” O’Brien said. “A horse with blistering speed like he has, you always wonder how far they can stretch it. The question is: How far can you stretch an elastic band? We’ve never been beyond a mile with him.”

British-bred Ouija Board makes her third consecutive start in the Filly & Mare Turf for trainer Ed Dunlop. She won in 2004 and finished second last year.

“I doubt many European performers would come three years in a row,” he said. “Most people would have retired her after she was injured at three. But the owners had a lot of patience. I’ll certainly never have another one like her.”

I had to laugh at this … from The Bloodhorse’s ‘Morning Line’ Report the more detailed, blog-like feedback on the goings on at Churchill:

9:10 a.m. Thursday
Riding legend Angel Cordero Jr. and assistant Mike McCarthy leave trainer Todd Pletcher’s barn to get breakfast for the crew. With McCarthy driving, they come upon a gaggle of reporters blocking the backside road.

“Do you want me to yell ‘Loose horse’?” Cordero asks. “That worked last time. I was trying to come through to train, and I kept telling the reporters, ‘Excuse me, excuse me, I’m trying to come through,’ and nobody is moving. So, ‘Excuse me, excuse me, horse coming through!’ Nobody’s moving. Then I yell ‘LOOSE HORSE!!!’ Man! They picked up them cameras, they run, they clean the place up quick.”

loose horse…quality! but hey gets the press outta the way i guess…

so whats the forecast for louisville this weekend?

also how does colder weather affect racehorses? do they have to take special precautions with lower temps?

(more or less wrapping of legs for the race? more warm up?) I know that its most likely the same as in any other horse sport but just thought i would ask…

56 for a high and sunny, last I heard. I still will be wearing something warm. I can always take it off, LOL.

Horses love cool temps. It sounds perfect for them.

Please post the results of the races. I don’t have anything but regular TV so won’t get to see anything. CAn’t go off to a sportsbar (they will probably be watching college sports anyway) 'cause I got to stay here to take care of the horses I have. Also, since I live in the Tampa bay area, Sunday all they’ll be talking about is the Buccaneers (guess they’ll loose again). So please, give me a clue about what’s happened in the races. thanks - steph

you can watch it online!

go to www.youbet.net and sign up for a FREE account…then you can at least watch the races…otherwise ESPN.com might be showing some live racing too…but the youbet.net thing is worth it…gives you the live feed from the track…and you can place fake wagers…on youbet.com you can place real wagers but i prefer the no risk kind

thanks jinx, I’ll give that a try, wonder how it’ll work on my slow dial-up. Just switched on the morning show on TV and what did the sports anchor say: What’s going on with the Bucs quarterback?’ geez. oh, and don’t forget about high school football. college ball, nascar, golf. well as far as we’re concerned here in central fl, nothing going on in the horse world. oh well. everyone who’s going to watch, enjoy !!! - steph

Isn’t there an OTB (Off track betting) place around you where you could go to watch? I don’t know if Tampa Bay Downs is open for bets/racing and in your area, but that’s a possiblity. Their website isn’t very informative about stuff like that!
