Water, water, water …
No not rain, but rather the intense amount of water that has been applied to the Churchill surfaces and its been significantly increased.
Kentucky has been suffering a drought for much of the season and Stay Thirsty might apply to the Europeans. They have complaints of the firm ground: Sir Michael Stoute (and to a lesser degree Henry Cecil), with the course superintendent as to whether enough water has been put on the track.
Plenty of water is being poured on the track but could a Euro scratch (like ML favorite in the BC Turf - Workforce) if it stays too firm? They won’t run him if its too hard as they see that as a risk.
Churchill reportedly has been watering the course 10 minutes per day since Oct. 25, and had watered 20 minutes per day before then. Ten minutes of watering is equivalent to about one-quarter inch of rain, 20 minutes to one-half inch. The turf course is far greener than any of the grass in the area that hasn’t been heavily watered.
TVG said that 100,000 gallons a day is now being applied up from 20,000 gallons a day just last week.
