I do agree that some SO choose to use vet services for their collection methods. That is their chosen business model which I do not want to pay for. It raises my cost basis for producing a foal and decreases the odds of a successful profit for me.

I agree with many of the points made here. I too have walked away from stallions because of a M-W-F collection schedule. I was a mare owner before I was a stallion owner, so I always try to go above and beyond (ie/ I request 24 hour notice but have never refused a collection even with no notice, have collected at 10PM, etc).
I also have NO booking fee because I always thought it was a bit crazy as a mare owner. I charge collection at cost (paid directly to vet clinic). I also have no black out dates and stick to local shows during breeding season and have collected and shown on the same day.

I was a just a mare owner for many years before I bought Concerto Grosso a few years ago. I have tried to word my contract so that it covers all the things I would want to know and have if I was an outside mare owner breeding to him

First of all, my stallion has very good semen and ships well. I stand him at a vet cinic where the staff is unbelievable and we have been very successful in delivering viable semen on time. As long as they are contacted by 9am in the morning, CG will be collected and shipped out the same day. They will collect Mon-Sat (a little extra fee for Sat). So far there have been no complaints on the receiving end.

My contract is good for several years, I offer a 30 day post foaling LFG and no fees above the stud fee except for $125 collection fee and FEDEX costs.

I give discounts for approved warmblood and performance mares. All in all, I think in this economic climate, we as stallion owners, have to woo and please the mare owners if we want any business.

Oh yes, one more thing I hate. LFG means foal stands and nurses. Beyond that - you’re on your own. That doesn’t show me that the SO is really all that interested in me getting a nice foal, only that they are really, really, really interested in getting their money. I’ve had that happen and lost the stud fee, including the booking fee, the shipping fee, the insemination and board fees, a year for the mare, the foaling and board fees AND the d@mn foal!! I HATE contracts like that.

The LFG is the justification for a higher stud fee, which should, in theory, cover the extra collections. But instead, the mare owner gets to pay for the extra collections and the extra booking fees.

With frozen, the collection is already paid for. All you have to pay is shipping - AND, with some SO’s loses the foal if it stands and nurses the first day and dies the second. So how much of an LFG is that?

Squeeze the lemon till it puckers…I heard a nasty rumor from a stallion owner they have a private clique with a list of mare owner names…it’s just a rumor though…I will say I’m on it. Work with the people that are willing to work with you!
