Breyer Horses….. How many adults still have their collection?

The smell of a newly purchased Breyer horse still comes with a memory of excitement!
A short flashback of being a kid again. Maybe I need to go out and buy myself a couple new breyer horses.

I used to make these really nice (nice for a kid!) saddles and bridles for my breyer horses. The saddles were of layered felt in different colors and the bridles were made mostly out of pipe cleaners. I did save some of them along with whatever other breyer horse accessories I managed to collect.

I also remembered hating my best friend because her parents bought her everything she ever wanted which once included the She-Ra horse in that clear pink color. Oh, how I hated her for having that horse.

A few new Breyers can never hurt!

Breyers… Mine are stabled on top of a bookcase and in a closet, along with some random horse models from other makers. Amazing how deeply you could live in make-believe as a kid. Between toy horses and books, I essentially didn’t have a “real” life between 5 and 15.

I still collect them…

My husband likes to buy limited edition ones or porcelains. I just counted 25 in the living room. There are lots of stablemates in the kitchen…maybe 30.

And the rest are on shelves in the office & guest bedroom.

Breyers are the only thing horse related my husband will buy, so I am just fine with the ones I received. It is still exciting to receive a “special” or “rare” one.

Not sure how many I currently have…I have sold a bunch of the ones that didn’t make my top list, but I think maybe about 200 or so. Not too bad.

Wow!!! Some of you sure have A LOT of ponies!!! I had mine in boxes at parents but I’m WAY too old to have stuff at parents so they told me to take them- and a bunch of other stuff I had there. I doubt I have more than 20. I think I am going to re-home the yearling quarter horse, the arabian mare (black with white mane and tail), the appaloosa baby (even though it’s really cute, and maybe the rearing buckskin. I am definitely going to keep my jumping horse (still have the wall that it is jumping over- many on e-bay don’t!) and Clydesdale family. I have more but haven’t finished unpacking the boxes. I think I have a nice bay mare with a nursing foal and I’m going to keep them. It was such a nice part of my childhood to get new Breyers for birthdays and x-mass. I would like Breyer to make one of my horse- but she isn’t famous so I doubt that will happen.

I’d like to get Seattle Slew and Rags to Riches and Secretariat… and probably more but I really don’t need any more stuff like that…. I guess… well that would be the mature thing to do…but I am not always known for my maturity!
There are THOUSANDS of mature people who are aficionados of model horses! I have about 200+ myself, and just bought some from an older lady going into assisted living…they were the last of her 40+ year collection.

I have a few- one of a mule Im told is collectable. Most are bandaged with duct tape. And my favorite was the grey arab mare. Even though shes in pretty rough shape I will always treasure her.

We couldn’t afford Breyers, but I still have a large collection of Grand Champions in my parents’ storage shed.

Is there a way to repair them? I seem to recall my John Henry had a broken leg.

How do people keep them if you still have them, also? I don’t have a huge collection but I do like them. I’m just a bit short on storage space. I’m wondering about maybe a lighted shelf up around the top of my office space? So I can see them but they aren’t in the way?

Superglue and model paint worked well for me. I have my collection still, some 50 odd models. I considered selling them during a tight patch back in the early '80’s, but managed to hold onto them. Many of mine date back from the '60’s, when my older sisters got them and handed them down. Memories…

I’m glad I read this thread. Now I can look at my collection guilt free ! Think I have close to 50 displayed in my spare bedroom, along with trophies, ribbons, and pictures from events. I’m sure my non-horsey friends roll their eyes, but all have been nice enough to not express their opinion.

What I don’t care for are painted ponies, which several people have gifted to me. They are all still in boxes. I ask everyone I know for a Zenyatta Breyer for Christmas the minute it came out. No one got me one, yet in that time I got several PPs. My DH finally gave me Zenyatta last Christmas

I very sadly no longer have mine.

I sold all but my favorite models. If you are willing to do a little research and sales listing some of the models are worth quite a bit for those of you who have older/limited edition models. They are worth more if you still have the box. I used to show them back in my 4-H days.

I have two painted ponies given as gifts, but I absolutely don’t want any more.

I donated my extensive collection to my Pony Club when I was a teen.

They had a used tack closet - received donations then sold them to fund the club. The model horses were a hot item with the kids - and raised a good amount of funds for the club!

I still remember my three favorites (all purchased in the 80’s) - “Sham” - because I loved “King of the Wind”, “Touch of Class” - because I loved that show jumping mare, and “John Henry” - who can resist a big brown TB gelding

I lost a very impressive collection in my house fire almost two years ago.

Got a lot of wonderful gifts from the model horse community and friends who knew I collected in the aftermath. I have picked up very few models since then - I’ve just lost the passion. I gave away a few of the New In Box models to my best friend’s daughters. Got to make new collectors of course.

I used to customize and paint them too - did a lot of commissions for people (I had super cheap prices because I liked doing it and know I’m not as awesome as most artists) but that fizzled out about a year ago.

I keep my favorites displayed - I have a taste for the shiny glossy ones. I’ve moved onto collecting goats. It’s much harder to find goats (that look like goats) so it’s a more interesting hunt for me and fits me better.

I have a few at my dad’s house, boxed in the attic. I need to get them, too hot up there!

They made a model of my horse’s sire, Sshameless. Found out a few months ago. My horse looks just like his daddy so it’s essentially a model of my boy. My birthday is next month. Guess who is gonna get a new Breyer!

In my office, I keep a Justin Morgan since Bosco is a bay Morgan. All my others from childhood are wrapped in bubble wrap in boxes in the attic. I used to have them in a curio cabinet in a previous house, but we sold the cabinet. My four year old niece has been bitten by the horse bug and received her first Breyer this year. She wanted a black horse so I gave her one new Classics of a black Thoroughbred. She named him Thatrow. Funny kid.

Great memories playing with my Breyers.

I have about two dozen of them stabled on a bookshelf in my parents’ house. I told my mom she’s not allowed to get rid of them, even though I live 8000 miles away and currently have no room in my tiny house. Some of them are in pretty good shape, others a bit beat up from years of travel and stallion fights. I used to pretend select ones were alive and care for them (or so I thought) like they were real horses until about age 13, when I got my first living, breathing horse. Then I found out very quickly that real ones are far more troublesome than Breyers and superglue is a lot cheaper than your vet.
