Broodmare/foal boarding MD-VA area, 2012

I’m looking for suggestions of places that board mares & foals for next year. The place I’d used in the past is not breeding their own mares any more; so, unless they have an outside mare/foal it may not work out for my future foal to have a buddy there. That place is over on the Eastern Shore in the Centerville, MD area; so, that’s within a reasonable driving range for me (about 60 miles). They would still take in mares and foals, and have nice big stalls for them; but at this time they don’t have anyone other than me who has expressed an interest in that type of boarding.

I live between Annapolis and Baltimore (really closer to Annapolis). Ideally I’d like to find something within about an hour give or take of my home. Northern VA would be ok, like somewhere out/along I-66 beyond Gainesville. Or in MD out I-270 beyond Gaithersburg, or somewhere between Gaithersburg and Baltimore.

I have some time to work this out because, if all continues to go well, my foal will not be born until mid-May 2012.

Any suggestions?

If you prefer, you can PM me.

Thanks!
Jennifer

You could try Rigbie Farm.

What about Hilltop Farm in MD?

I second Rigbie. They took wonderful care of my mare and the foal. Because of my experience my trainers sent them 3 mares last year, and moms and all their foals are doing fine.

I also visited Hilltop, and their program for raising foals seems well thought out and executed. But I don’t recall if they foal out, or only take weaned ones.

Huge thumbs up for Rigbie

Hunt ridge stables at Blue Ridge Farm. Off rokeby in Upperville east of the colt show grounds.
Patricia Ramey is wonderful with broodmares and babies. She was a vet tech for many years with a repro vet. She can hsndle as anything.
She manages them according to what they need and not a set schedule. The first few weeks momma and baby come in and out according to weather and what baby can handle and have private turn out. Then they go out with one or two other moms. Never more. She watches them like a hawk. Babies are lead out in hand very early by Patricia and her partner. No helpers. It is always her that is watching and handling the babies.
Her hay is the best and moms have hay constantly in the stalls before and after foaling. She plans weanings very carefully.
When I was still breeding she would send text updates during important times like foal watch or weanings and if anything has come up. I never worried about coming out to find out something was amiss. Several small breeding operations have boarded there moms and babies there.

And all the stalls are huge. Three barns built for moms and babies.

Thanks for your responses! Looks like a few to check out so far. Keep the ideas coming! MapQuesting some of them from my house reveal that they are a bit far; so, I could use a few more ideas!

Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties, and south of PG county might be worth a thought, too/

I have to put in my recommendation for Rigbie as well. They take impeccable care. Their client list reads like a “Who’s Who” of the equine industry.

Margaret Redman is a small barn pro that does an excellent job foaling out and installing manners and life skills on young horses and foals, as well as prepping them for successful in hand careers. She is quirky but awesome! Love her.
Also Anne Jones of Black Gables (I think thats the farm name) is someone who I would reccomend to anyone!

Thanks again for the replies!!
