Oh goodie. Then they gave us a montage of everyone who fell down.

That was really stressful to watch. SF is lucky to be alive. Great riding by Pippa, I’m not sure if another rider without her experience could have got that done. It sure wasn’t pretty.

This was a dangerous course for this field. Without the MIM clips on many jumps there would have been far more horse falls and rider falls. The horses got a leg down in open oxers many, many times, and managed to scramble away with just the rails down. Without clips giving way, there may have been serious injuries, maybe worse, given the way horses were getting into the open timbers.

And of course, the follow up question is, why were so many horses hesitating and putting a leg (or two) down on the oxers? It’s because of the way they were placed and what the horse could see, or not see, of the landing, I think.

The rebuilds were constant, all day long.

This is the problem with a mash-up of show jumping and cross country.

Will there be a live feed for showjumping tomorrow? They just said it would be shown on BBC, but delayed.

Did the open oxers and open corners have MIM clips or frangible pins? Frangible pins is the typical installation for that type of fence.

MIM clips were for sure on the gates, which is their typical installation.

Anyone who hopes to preserve eventing needs to think twice about that.

Someone tell Stupid (whoever Stupid is) to take it down !!! This was an ugly, ugly day. Don’t present the worst of it to the world.

Watching this on and off this morning has really turned me off ever wanting to ride at that level. Disgusting course, no rider came off saying it was brilliant fun.

this is NOT what Eventing is about. Too many open corners, too many huge oxers on turns. Jumps just TOO big.

wont be surprised to see lame horses tomorrow.

well done to all the riders who made it home. Doubt they want to do that again.

Interesting. They just took away Becky Woolven’s 11 penalties. I wish I remembered seeing her go.

A lot of those riders would not have been there, but for the European Championships. You are confusing the quality of the entries with the standard of the test. No Germans, French, Belgians, Irish, Dutch etc, etc

Joined the livestream when the cover shot was Buck’s fall - ugh. Generally pleased with the US results across the country - seems like slow-ish but technically competent rides got the job done today. It’s nice seeing so many US flags still on the leaderboard without letters.

I don’t see a problem with Ian commenting on the length of stirrup. They ARE long. He was making a comment. His opinion. I suspect that is the reason he is on, to give his opinion.
Sarah Bullimore should have been given a 15 for her trip over the egg cartons. Completely missed. I have to wonder if she got away with it because she is kind of a big deal over there. After reading what Tilly wrote about her horse, Reve De Rouet(?) in EN, he sounds a bit like Arthur. Brilliant but a lunatic.

they only showed her going thru the finish. She usually rides the giant Clyde, Riverdance.

Ian Stark has the props to say anything he likes on the subject of eventing.

Ian Stark is the nicest guy ever, he speaks from experience. Maybe shorter stirrups would help.

I am counting, (it was a long morning), something like THIRTEEN FALLS!! And more horse falls than I have ever seen. Terrible course. But as Equibrit sez, without a lot of the big guns from Europe. Maybe this is something like the results of the Pan Ams. We got thru a hairy scary course, but half the field didn’t. Burghley has always been the biggest course in the world but this was a train wreck. While I have always hated the big white spread fences at the Maltings, I have never seen them cause so much trouble as they did today. I began to watch thru my fingers after Doug fell there. I very much dislike square oxers. especially giant white ones. White should not be seen on an xc course IMO.
I am saddened that Doug, Woodge, and Buck fell, and Hannah retired, but the good news is that everyone else made it around a very difficult course.

I agree. Lots of carrots for that boy tonight
so clever and trying so hard to keep his feet under him.

Agreed with the comment about helping/coaching riders at home who might not have the skills to ride with non-traditional positions/quirks. I am about Lauren Kieffer’s height and ride a similarly sized horse (but we are completely the opposite in the skills and athleticism of the 5star combo:o). Usually riders my size are on horses at least 16h so I don’t see many famous role models to copy- I have wondered watching LK if I am supposed to be riding my shorter horse with a much longer stirrup.

Will be rooting for Bug and LK tomorrow. Love his Arabian high tail carriage.
