Burgundy Show Jackets?
Just a heads up to anyone it may apply to: judges can and will eliminate you in the hunter/eq rings for this color! I follow a girl on Twitter who bought the equiline version and got eliminated from the junior hunters. Too bad, because it’s just gorgeous. I hope to see it more in the jumper ring in the future.
Not sure I would put too much faith in that being the whole, complete story and absolutely only reason she was completely eliminated off Twitter unless the judge wants to weigh in.

I personally feel like the the entire back shirt tail pulled completely out of low rise breeches flopping behind the riders butt with the too loose blingy belt thumping up and down in rhythm with every jump should be grounds for elimination. Hasnt happened yet, riders always found other ways to screw the round up.

Fair enough – but considering we’ve had two judges weigh in on the burgundy in the hunter/eq ring and it’s spelled out pretty clearly in the rules what colors are allowed, I’m not too fussed on whether there was another reason in addition to the jacket or not.
as a hunter eq judge…JUST NO!!! In the jumpers, have all the fun you want with it!!
OK, mroads, if you had a…say 84…trip from a Junior that should pin 3rd based on the other rounds you saw and scored? Would you give it a zero and sign the card that way? Have the steward excuse it? Give it a 78? Or hold your nose and turn the card in with the 84?

Care to weigh in?

BTW, not arguing to defend bugundy coats, although they would be better then that blindingly bright blue on a Hunter. But genuinely curious if this, eliminated because of hunt coat color, actually happened at a USEF rated show or it’s a social media legend.

Cavalleria Toscana makes a really stunning burgundy one with black piping.

Why would the lovely deep burgundy be worse than a navy, green, brown or black jacket in the hunters? All these colours are classic and understated!

:love-struck:
I wish I rode well enough for this! I have a dark bay  is the burgundy generally accepted for jumpers? I’ve always thought it was frowned upon being a shade of red but I’ve seen it all over recently so it makes me wonder… And covet…

Because under the current rules, it is not considered a conservative color. Competing in the hunters in not about it being a fashion show, it is about style, form, way of going…and tradition.

The Rulebook does state that either the management or judge has the right to eliminate an exhibitor who is inappropriately attired. I’m a stickler for riders being properly dressed while in the show ring. Have I eliminated a rider before for being inappropriately dressed? No, but I have dropped their score down significantly and then have made sure to have the Steward speak with the rider and trainer so they are aware that they need to do a quick change before coming back in the ring.

Ever since Jessica Springsteen wore (and looked fabulous wearing) a burgundy jacket I have seen so much buzz about the color!

Definitely going to be a hot new trend it seems.
I was just going to say that! She looks SO chic in burgundy- not sure if I could pull it off in the pre-adult hunters, but for the rest of you, go for it!

I just love the burgundy. Which brand is Jessica’s? It’s such a gorgeous shade.

I don’t see the big deal about burgundy in the hunters either, you used to see it sometimes in the old days, but a much plumier one than these even, almost purple. not to mention the bold plaids. I can only imagine what some of these judges would think about some of the bold plaids!!! hahaha

If you want to see pictures buy GM’s book, you can see one famous hunter trainer in her childhood horrible bold plaid coat. On a paint. It’s adorable. Then she handed it down to her daughter I think, who I doubt was eliminated for wearing it. Love!!!

Destry Spielberg has worn the Cavalleria Toscana coat in the jumpers: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2015/10/02/14/2CFD3AD900000578-3257619-image-a-29_1443793006801.jpg

Canary breeches are allowed in the hunter ring.

“Not about it being a fashion show”

True, but if it nothing crazy and it makes it a tiny bit more fun for the people paying lots & lots of money to do this . . .
But then, where do you draw the line? Who gets to decide if it is “nothing crazy” or just makes it a “tiny bit more fun”? If that’s the case for some riders, then they are best to enter classes in the jumper ring instead where the dress code isn’t so strict and making a fashion statement is acceptable. JMHO

As a fox hunter, tradition and hunters just don’t even go in the same sentence anymore. We have strayed so far away from tradition, that I stay as far away from that ring as I can.

So basically if I want to have a little fun with my horse, and think that color Burgundy enhances her appearance, I should basically hightail it to the jumper ring even though my horse is a hunter? I doubt that in days of old, when they were fox hunting and some nobleman showed up in a dark purplish/burgundy coat they told him to take a hike…;)but I might be wrong. What about the dark “eggplant” coats, and crazy colored shadbellies we see in dressage? Besides, as has already been discussed hunters today is so far from what it was meant to be, it doesn’t really make a lot of difference. I don’t mean to offend anyone who actually does know the specific rules of the Hunt, but the color we are discussing is so muted! Oh well, I guess I’ll just go buy a nice hunter green, or something like that.

Looks like hers is Gucci:

I am a USEF R Hunter & Equitation judge and have to agree with the above statement. As per USEF Rule HU125: “Attire. Riders are required to wear conservatively colored coats (black, blue, green, grey or brown) which are free from adornment which in the judge’s opinion is overly distracting.”

If you are planning to show in the hunter ring, just be forewarned that burgundy is NOT a conservative color for the hunter ring. ;)
What are your thoughts on the blue or black horseware coat that’s been linked? I noticed its single vented. Is that ok or distracting?

I wonder if you got the right shade of burgundy, if you could argue it is part of the “brown” family???  Would it be legal then??? I myself do stick to a more traditional look mostly because I don’t have piles of money to throw at the ever-changing trends of today, but if I did, I would definitely want to rock a burgundy coat! They are beautiful

On a side note- I have always had a soft spot for the brown helmets and tall boots as well. Don’t know if I would ever show in them, but I do love the warmth of the look.

I’ll venture a guess that burgundy gets added to the conservative colors in the rule book in the not too distant future. Really it’s a very conservative color so market demand will remove the stick from the traditionalists butts soon enough. I’m all for tradition but uptight is too much.

With both USEF and Equine Canada, any member can submit a rule change proposal. Then the involving discipline committee needs to read it over and decide whether they want to make it rule change or not.
