Peppermint flavored paste. My horse loves it.
Thatâs a great idea!
Tablets or powder, I put both in an oral syringe with some liquid (water, apple juice, etc.) and orally dose them.
Liquid bute is my favourite to administer, but is more expensive than the powder. My vet doesnât carry the tablets or the paste.
I did get a tube of the paste a few years ago when I was at WEC and I hated it. It was so hard to push out of the tube, I felt like half of it got wasted.
Alas, I go with the powder. None of mine will eat it in their food, and yes Iâve tried multiple flavours. Now I just keep a 60cc syringe with the bute container so I can add liquid and syringe it in.
My horses have no issues with eating the orange flavored powder on their feed with nothing else added. My 31 year old, who gets it from time to time, is awful about syringing anything in her mouth anymore. She wasnât always this way, but now itâs generally impossible to do.
I prefer the compounded alfalfa flavored Bute powder in most cases or the injectable for the rare horse that wonât eat it.
The paste is absolutely impossible to get out of the tube more often than not. My horses are very good about oral meds, but I have small hands and physically cannot squeeze the tubes without using both hands, which means no hands free to hold the horseâs head to ensure sis meds actually go in the mouth and not on the groundâŠ
Thank you so much for all your responses! They were very helpful
