Buying a new 2+1 Trailer. Kingston versus 4-Star. Thoughts?

Thank you for all the feedback. Anyone out there with a Kingston 2+1 that can chime in?

Thank you! Is there anything you didn’t add that you wished you had after? I’m going through building one right now so we know what we want to order this summer.

Rob also co-owns the 4Star dealership here in town. I had a really crappy experience the first time I went there, but went back this weekend and had a really great, helpful sales girl. The prices were also much more fair than I thought they would be.

You may want to shoot an email to Morgan at The Hitch and Tow LLC-they carry Kingstons and have a few 2+1 on the lots. They may be able to provide you with some people who have bought them who can serve as a reference.

I actually had Rob himself as my sales guy, he was great. Of course I did all of this over email, so I didn’t have any in-person experience.

I listed the things I added since I bought it in my first post. I don’t feel like the electric jack is a necessary expense as it’s easy to crank, but that’s JMO.

I missed that, sorry!

My husband begs to differ on the electric jack-I told him we could wait on that and save some money at purchase and he told me it was worth the money to not have to hear me complain about it.

I love my hydraulic jack. Admittedly it came on the trailer and I likely wouldn’t have gotten one if I’d built one custom but it’s soooo awesome. I adore it.

have had both - 4 star all the way

Another vote for Adams 2 + 1. I just got a 2015, only used twice!, from Trailer Country LLC in Carrollton, VA. They were great to work with, offer financing, and they can custom order from Adams. Mine is 7;6 tall and 7’ wide, with a 9’ box. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1760216733990630&set=pb.100000069618910.-2207520000.1519304619.&type=3&theater Tack room is a touch small, but I can live with it. Love it! I can tack my 17.1 hand gelding in the box and go! It pulls really well and I expect it to last a loong time. It’s all Aluminum too.

I am not trying to be a jerk or start a ā€œfireā€, but please do not believe that an Adams trailer is a comparable trailer to a 4-Star. They are not!!! I always say that the one bad thing about a 4-Star is that they are not cheap. However they hold together and will take a beating. The Adams Trailers will not.

I’ve had both and I will tell you that both (Like anything in life) had their own pluses and minuses. That said I have seen my Adam hold up very well and for those who can’t swing the (enormous) price to have a 4 star custom made, an Adam does a solid job. This feels a bit like a Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge debate. I think it’s easiest to note that the devoted owners of each are just that…devoted. Thus they would likely promote what they have enjoyed most. But that doesn’t mean that someone else couldn’t feel the same way about a different brand.

I suspect that the adams and the 4-star runabout are likely similar in quality, which is to not say that adams and deluxe 4 star are the same (see my call out earlier).

Again, not to be jerk, but the Adams do not compare to either 4-Star model.

I’m bumping this very old thread, since it was helpful to me during my research. Hopefully someone else finds it useful.

I recently decided to upgrade my '04 Kingston 2H bumper pull to a 2+1. I went waaaay down the rabbit hole researching everything there is to know. 4-star and Kingston quickly floated to the top of my list of preferred makes. Basically, it came down to paying $60k for a new 4-star, $50k for a new Kingston, or $40k for a used 4-star (used Kingston 2+1s simply don’t exist; I’ve seen ONE come on the market in the last 6 months and it was sold within hours). OR drop down a tier in quality to something like a Shadow and pay $40k new or $25-30k used.

I decided I’m a Kingston girl at heart and to get into my forever trailer now. My old bumper pull served me well and I much prefer wood floors to aluminum. I found a new one on the lot at Whitehorse Truck and Trailer in MA. HIGHLY recommend Ryan Rudy at Whitehorse. He was truly exceptional to deal with. I made the decision to purchase on Tuesday and the trailer showed up in my driveway in upstate NY today (Friday) around lunch time.

It’s beautiful! So well made and horse friendly. I cannot wait to put it to use. I will certainly report back once its had its maiden voyage. But I wanted to bump this thread for anyone else considering the upgrade, especially these two brands.

I read through most of this thread before I realized how old it was :-). I bought an Equispirit 2+1 a few years ago and I love it. Incredibly well built tons of great features and it pulls behind me like there’s nothing at all back there. Another brand for anyone considering a 2+1
