Buying with no coggins

But the blood can go anywhere? The horse doesn’t need to reside in the same state as the lab that runs the test, I don’t think? I just looked at my last set of coggins…I’m in CT and the lab was in NY.

You could also pick up the horse, haul him to the lab (in Ohio), and then just wait for the results before going home. How likely is he to be cool standing on a trailer for a couple few hours? I knew someone who did that eons ago.

speaking of EIA, this is pretty damned scary–

I’m appaled that so-called “professionals” would regard spending a few cents on a new syringe and needle for each horse as a reasonable cost-saving measure.
I expect they’ll rethink their strategy after the regulatory and civil suit dust has settled.

Have I done it ? Would I do it again? yes depending on the circumstances- things like is it a pretty closed farm or do they travel a bunch, etc

If I lived where crossing state lines was a big deal I probably wouldn’t though.

From the Indana State Board of Animal Health:

Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA)
.
Equine must be tested for EIA (sometimes called a “Coggins test”) within the 12 months immediately prior to an animal entering Indiana. Animals that test positive for EIA may not enter Indiana. The ELISA and AGID tests for EIA are accepted.
.
The following equine are exempt from the EIA test requirement:
.

  • Suckling foals that are accompanied by their dam, when the dam has tested negative for EIA within the last twelve months.
  • Animals moved directly to a licensed livestock market, if the market facility collects a sample and submits it for EIA testing immediately upon arrival at the market.
  • Animals consigned for immediate slaughter.

My vet won’t accept blood that she doesn’t pull herself.

Right. But the vet who draws can send the blood anywhere. It doesn’t have to go through your vet.

Ah gotcha. I think he’ll just go to quarantine and wait. As long as we can get him loaded!

Fingers crossed for you and Stihl! When’s the day??

And she shouldn’t–that’s a federal form she’s filling out, and her licnse/accreditation on the line.

The physical location of the lab is irrelevant.
It’s a question of getting the test run before the animal crosses state lines, not the blood sample.
It’s a lot easier to transport a vacutainer and a form than a horse.

Mr Stihl has arrived at quarantine and is capital F Feral. He will stay 30 days to ensure he doesn’t have any bugs or other issues. This will also allow me to ship out my last client mare & foal for the year.

I’m excited for you guys! What a fun project! At least he got on (and off) the trailer :joy:

You’ll have to keep us posted an Stihl’s progress!

I felt like a real cowboy :cowboy_hat_face:. We had to use panels to move him.

He is supposedly gelded so that’s a plus if that is actually the case!

Not a Vet, but a (very sketchy) boarding barn owner did this a several years ago about an hour form where I was living. They found out when one of borders wanted to move their horse and the Coggins came up positive. IIRC, over 10 horses were euthanized due to his carelessness, including the horses of some kids that boarded there.

I saw a post from one of the owners who lost two $$$$ broodmares in this ordeal. They were much more understanding and gracious than I ever could be.

Happened to a neighbor/friend
Who bought a good h/j mare
From a sketchy trainer/sales barn.
She was notified by the state
Vet a year later that she needed to test. Positive.
Tragic outcome for innocent owners and their horses.

I’d have been homicidal.
Given the expense of having a horse on IV fluids/medication with an indwelling catheter, and they decided to save 10 cents apiece on flushes? I doubt the clients would have begrudged that addtitional expense.

Interestingly, the original post was much different and included kind words about the clinic. That has now been removed.

Somebody would be writing me a big fat check over that one. Way bigger than what some fresh needles would have cost
