Bye bye Baby Bear. You were a very good boy. :(

Step one of “Let Bear be Bear” (those of you who are The West Wing afficianado’s will understand the context) is a SUCCESS!

Giving him the taste of hay, and letting him figure out how to chew it is working! Having had a little at dinner, he saw me give the other horses their nighttime hay at 10pm and he leaned out of his still, nodded his head and nickered at me for some more.

Not only that, but he ate his hay (3 handfuls) AND ate his soup overnight!
Same thing this morning for his first breakfast.
He inhaled both hay and soup!

And, wait for it… The best news (to a horseperson) is…

He POOPED!

Great news!

Yay!!!

“He POOPED!”

We are so easily pleased.

GO BEAR!!! Hallelujah!!

I thought of you both this AM as I’m shaking out some beautiful alfalfa leaves
and wondered if Bear Man would like this…?

Keep up your great work!

Who would have thought manure was a beautiful thing.

I so relate to your second guessing every little thing - drives us crazy and on our minds every minute of every day.

Waiting for further good news…

The Manure Miracle instantly turns a bad day into a better one. So glad Bear is eating some, and pooping some. All good signs in a better direction.
Hugs and jingles to you both.

Met my mare in the midst of her having an impaction colic that lasted for days… she was for sale so at the 11th hour I put some $ up for a lease on her to help provide funds for the vet… When was I sure she was meant to be in my life for a lllllooooonnnnngggggg time?? a few days later when I got a picture text of a pile of poop captioned “LOOK WHAT I DID MOM!!” I shed just a few tears…yep we love poop…the manure miracle should be celebrated and thanks given to the gastric gods digestive divas by having some chinese food…poopoo platter(s) of course and chocolate cake pops for dessert

Thanks for keeping us updated during this ordeal. We are all pulling for you and Bear!

More Jingles & AO for Da Bear & his owner !!

[/B]more Jingles & AO for ‘Da Bear’ Team !!’

Very glad to hear it.

Glad to hear a good update for Bear (and you, LH).

Glad to hear a good update.
Still jingling for Bear.

Looking in on Da Bear ```` Jingles & AO continue ~

Morning … looking in on the ‘Da Bear’ team ``` Jingles & AO continue ~

I’m so glad to hear your good news, Hooray for the Bear!

Like everything that has happened in the last month, there are small peaks and deep valleys. The eating thing was short lived. Despite 3 injections/day of Torb and 20 cc’s a day of Banamine and an enormous shot of antibiotics everyday, Bear has not eaten in 24 hours.

The vet and the surgeon are looking long term – They think that, in 4 - 6 weeks when the wires come out, he MIGHT be pain free. I keep saying that my time frame is measured in days not weeks, but it is like they do not hear me.

I understand that there is a chance he MAY pull through. But between now and then, he will need to be on narcotics and huge amounts of Banamine. And his antibiotics cost over $100/day. It could cost over $3000 more if I follow the vet’s path.

A friend wants to set up a “Go Fund Me” account. I have not decided, but if I agree to try to keep Bear going for another 4 weeks, I might have to.

I am not a praying person (despite my screen name  ) but now is the time to pray for Bear.

LH- you have been an amazing advocate for Bear all the way through, and I know you will continue to work in his best interest, with your loving heart. Hugs and good thoughts to you and your Bear, across the miles…

We ARE praying people and will continue to pray for you and Bear. In fact, my wife put you and Bear on the weekly prayer list at our church.

I think getting some funding help is a good idea. We could certainly help.

Thank you all for taking this trip with me. It has been emotional and heartwrenching – no more so than this morning when I took the Bear man to the vet clinic.

I have been keeping a log of every meal I made and every poop and every morsel of hay he tried to chew. By this morning he had bottomed out on all levels. No eating, no manure, just a very little wet spot, and he had not even eaten the soft hay I left for him last night.

When I went out to give him his morning meds, he just stood in the middle of his stall, with his tongue hanging out and his jaw clenched sideways.

To keep him going through this for even another day would have been for me — because I was too scared to make the decision — not for him. Putting it off by even a day or two would not help either one of us.

He was a really good horse. He always did what was asked of him, whether it was getting dressed up with a paper necklace and glitter on his hooves for little girls who wanted to play dress up with a horse, to winning a pregreen class at the big May KHP AA show. And everything in between.

Many people loved him and he has left a big hole in many hearts today.

RIP da Bear Man. I love you.
