Calling all plus size equestrians!

Hi Everyone - just to add - my half chaps came 4 days after I ordered (would have been 2 except I altered the original day because I was out all day and then we had a nasty snowstorm). They fit really well. The leather is nice. Felt great to ride in. Cost less than $150 CDN including duties, brokerage, shipping and local taxes. Overall a great experience!

I was especially pleased with the online experience. I have ordered products horsey and otherwise from Canadian suppliers that have taken longer to arrive than these did. The shipper texted me so I knew where the delivery was and gave me options I could alter such as not requiring a signature or changing the shipping date.

Great cheap option!

During the Dressage Finals in Lexington I was Saddle Shopping. Walked into the Mac Rider booth and asked if she had any 18’s to sit on? The blonde Rep, the one that you see Advertising Mac Riders in magazines replied, We only bring saddles for Normal sizes. Umm…an 18 is not abnormal you rude thing.

*My friend exclaimed out loud, she just called you a fat A$$, and we left.

My 6k can go elsewhere, thank you very much.

Oh, my goodness! How…rude…stupid…mean! What an awful thing to say to someone. Good for you for walking out.

Finding protective vests is nearly impossible, especially if you’re short-ish.

I’m short. I ordered my Airowear Outlyne online from Amira Equi. They come in 3-4 different lengths and the short truly is short.

On another subject, I made a separate thread about this earlier. I forgot about this ongoing discussion. I just got a pair of Jileon rain boots to wear to the barn. They are fantastic. Wide in the foot and the extra-wide calf fits up to 21 inches. Finally, I have a pair of rubber boots that easily fit over my long underwear and jeans.

Wow.

Not only was she rude and horrible…but she clearly didn’t know how saddles are measured, either. 18 does not refer to the size of one’s posterior. It’s about the length of your femur.

I would have either called or sent an email to the CEO to point out her ignorance.

WOW! How rude. Thank you for sharing because I know that is one company that I will not be spending my money to support. I guess they don’t want or need money that comes from the pockets of anyone that their horrible rep deems to be less than perfect.

YES!!!, Thank you for mentioning this. I have finally succumbed to buying used boots, my one foot is too painful to break in new boots getting them stretched to where they are comfortable. Mens don’t run small enough for my foot and I’ve already gone up a 1/2 size in womens boots to accommodate.

Don’t get me started on sizing of clothes, I’m now finding that even WalMart clothes is getting smaller. Normally I wear around a 14-16, found a nice rain coat at WalMart but had to get a 3XL to fit my hips and it just fit. I was happy to find a brand of Wrangler jeans that size 16 were too big, had the forethought to buy several pair before they stopped making them. My old size 34 breeches still fit but new size 34 breeches-not even remotely close.

 That’s infuriating! Honey, you take that $$$$ and call your local County rep. They’ll make you want you want and ensure it fits you and the horse. Done!

If I’m not mistaken, she WAS the owner of the company!
Which makes it much worse…

A lot worse, and it’s an owner that makes me reluctant to deal with a plus size brand mentioned in this thread.

I was in customer service for a long time, poor customer service, or customer relations mean that I will avoid them in future.

People like the great folks at Buckwild on the other hand, great product, and really great to deal with. Which is why Ihave far to many pairs of their breeches.

I am looking to fit a shark finned wither TB with a Western Saddle, and got recommended to look at Schleese, I could only find 15" and 16" seats offered on their page. I contacted them expressed disappointment, and they said that their 16" fit large, so what size was I. I replied with height and weight stats, and they came back with “sorry our 16” will be a little snug for you" That’s the best way of saying “your fat butt wont fit”, that I’ve heard

LOL. Yup, my problem with WalMart clothes is the sleeve length. And the torso length. I am an average 5’4 in height, but shopping at WalMart? Not for long sleeve anything, that’s for sure. Seems like they are cut for short(er) people and then sold as “regular” sizes.

As for jeans… I remember finding a style I really loved many years back. Since (as you pointed out) they are prone to disappearing, I decided to buy every single pair on the shelf in my size. I grabbed every pair, checked every SKU, headed to the dressing room. Now mind you, I’m already wearing a pair of same said jeans… I tried on every single one, (I believe there were 6) and do you know…only TWO of them fit.

Go figure.

bumping this back up because I discovered today that Charles Ancona does make hunt coats and shadbellies in larger sizes, all the way up through plus sizes! And if they need to, they will cut a pattern to fit you (I’m sure with an extra charge, but still, it’s available). Their attitude was if you need it we will make it but they pulled an off the rack option that would only need minor tweaks to fit, much to my surprise, because I wear plus sizes in street clothes and never expected them to have anything close. They couldn’t have been more helpful, too (and at that price point of course they should be 😂). Now I’m tempted, which is bad!!

I miss Equisentials custom breeches. As near as I can figure out the man who owned the business retired and his daughters only keep it going for a few years. They had stock sizes but would also do custom.

I always had to have coats tailored in, with the shoulder /bust arm length dilemma.

Getting the shoulder / arm right meant a sack below. A quick visit to the cleaners tailor made that adjustment.

I wish more breeches makers offered what in the jeans world is called W size. Womans (W) sizing is just a little more generous in the hips and thighs without being stupid in the waist… Nearest I found were Royal Highness and Shaply her breeches via VTO

As a dressage rider I always appreciated breeches that had pleating in front, was always just the extra bit of room needed.

Orangutan arms, that knows no size. Eddie Bauer is one of the few clothing makers who consistently offer Long sizing, though I have quibbles with their cuts fit and styling as well. No older woman with active outdoor lifestyle wants to be showing her décolletage all the time

I wonder how the OP turned out with her research project.

Let’s see:
Large breeches that don’t cover my foot because they are too long.
Shirts that are built for an actual woman’s body (we have boobs and we use them).
Breeches that hit above the belly button.

justchaps.com in the UK have a wide range of sizes and may do custom sizing as well.

I am not that big, but have big calves; I wear a short XW in their brand. I’m at the “paddock boots and half-chaps” time in my equestrian life; if I ever do take up showing again, I’m kind of dreading it, as I am short, curvy, and not skinny (10 or 12 petite in street wear, 16 to 18 womens petite in “standard sizing.”)

Oh – I forgot, about why the sizes are so different than our regular street wear, the equestrian clothing is sized like wedding dresses – to a long-set standard from when people in general were smaller.

My 3 pairs of ten year old breeches from Equissentials finally wore out. I am delighted that FITs now makes an XXL breech that is just as comfortable as my Equissentials. I found the size chart on the FITs website to be accurate, and the breeches are high quality. Many of us are willing to pay top dollar for quality riding clothes that fit. I hope more manufacturers realize that a lot of us are out there and ready to shop.

Still my biggest gripe, see they do extended sizes YAY, all the way to XXL DOUBLE YAY, then you find out that XXL is in fact size 14 - 16
