I was from PA, now live in TN, and would NEVER be without 4 wheel drive. I have very rarely ever parked on hardtop for any horse event, and even wet grass can be slicker than snot.
The reason why I dropped a significant sum of money on a new-to-me truck this very afternoon was that the 4 x 4 in my aged truck failed on me at a clinic a couple of weeks ago and left me burying myself in wet sand.
It was the last straw in its slow disintegration and made me realize that a) it just wasnāt worth pouring any more money into fixing it one more time, and that b) if I didnāt, I was going to be a nervous wreck every time I trailered anywhere, waiting for the next thing to fall off it.
When you are stuck it seems no amount of money saved on a 4x2 wold be worth it (to me). Or when you canāt go out
to p/u hay because it is snowing, etc. We put 500 pounds of sandbags in our p/u every year as well, plus we keep very good tyres on it. When hauling my most valuable possessions in the back, I need to feel well equipped.
Every time it seemed like I needed the 4x4, it was seriously because of a 2ā square patch of mud I managed to get a tire in backing up the trailer on a flat surface. That or wet grass. I wouldnāt risk the 4x2.
The resale value on your 4x4, even well used, will be much higher.
Iām on the north shore, and I bought a 4x2 Chevy Silverado 2500 about five years ago. I donāt haul often and rarely in winter, so I thought Iād try it ā itās a heavy duty truck, I put aggressive tires on it . . . and itās been pretty good. It was soooo cheap. But, I think about replacing it annually. My tires spun on the grass at Groton House, too. I am a skilled driver and hauler, and that helps, but I am tired of thinking so carefully about conditions. Youāre making the right move to stick to a 4x4.
Iām in MA now but growing up in Ontario, the couple of trucks I shared with my siblings were 4 x 2. Yeh got stuck and put weight in the back etc as well. When it came time for me to buy my first truck for towing down here in the US I made sure to get a 4 x 4! I use mine a lot.
Everytime thereās a bad storm with lots of snow and need to get to the barn (I do rough board) Iām so thankful for 4 wdr! Itās also nice to know I can also park at events and not worry (gah! Gonna jinx myself) too much about where I park and if I can get out.
Yeah-- I see more people disappointing with 4x2. I wouldnāt get one. It depends a lot where you are but w 4x4 you push a button and usually bingo you have traction and go. 4x2 ā¦you can spin on wet grass frustratingly. Yeah, sure you can get going againā¦after hiking back to the barn for 6 bags of grain and a couple cinder blocks to get weight over the rear tires.
Donāt get a 4x2----the money saved is not worth the hassles you will get into trying to use it for anything but interstate cruises. The 4x4 just saves a lot of aggravation if you have a farm and deal with inclement weather/conditions at all.
Amen!
Thanks for all of your help. Meet Red, he is a 2012 4 x 4 F250 :).
He is beautiful, congrats!!! I also just got 4WD 250 and Iām smitten! Mine was built by someone in Canada, so we named her Trudy, short for Trudeau.
Very, very pretty truck! Congratulations and may you have many safe miles of travel!
Congrats! I am picking up my brand new F250 on Wednesday.
