Can someone tell me what happened in OT forum?

The wild west of forums, reddit, has the following plainly stated.

Just an observation. I sincerely agree with the poster who maintained there are those who enter the thread and drop a derail anvil for sport.

And just another thought. Personally, I have outrage fatigue. It’s best I don’t participate there. I am content with twitter sled dogs. It’s like a salve to my soul.

But you could refer to THAT Man as fugly backyard breeding mess, fbbm, for short and make it horse related. One of few times an emoticon

But this forum isn’t reddit, it’s Chronicle of the Horse

Just because some other forum allows a behavior doesn’t mean COTH can’t have their own rules and guidelines that they will enforce as they see fit.

No. The point is that they are very strict. And the ban hammer is used often, with gusto.

Y’all figure it out. I am retreating to Blair Braverman twitter account of sled dogs. She and wrangler hubby off grid training doggos. But she set up an advent calendar to tweet in her absence. The maxis have names now. This litter after explorers.

See ya.

OT got shut down? Thank God. Kudos, @Moderator 1. We’ve all gotten so bitchy since having it available full time. COTH was a better place when it was a rare treat instead of an expectation.

I don’t think you will get a response from a mod in this thread. Maybe they’ll PM you? I don’t know. I’ve never seen a mod contribute to a conversation except to close a thread or notify that they’ve deleted, banned or edited posts.

I think they closed it down because of the back and forth in the political thread and the white privilege thread. IMO the white privilege thread should have been locked immediately as I think it constitutes a political topic and would ultimately get heated, which it did.

TBH I saw a lot of posts that I’d thought would be moderated but weren’t. I’m not sure how much was actually being done. I personally wouldn’t be surprised if the mod only has time to check threads once or twice a week as I’m sure they have another job.

Wish I could like this a million times.

So what? It’s their BB, they can do what they like… they can be as strict as they like… they can ban as often as they want…

I have a feeling media companies who don’t have to, may in general, be better off not hosting political content given the current “official” political discourse involving… media companies.

Thank you all for sharing your intelligent insightfulness on so many diverse and interesting subjects. Thank you COTH for providing the forum for as long as was practical.

Best wishes to all, now signing off for the most part, but perhaps coming back every now and again to discuss horses.

Dang, I was just going to post my Christmas tree experience in that thread in OT. Perhaps COTH could separate the political type subjects into one OT area and the rather benign ones into another? I don’t know if that would be feasible.

We had a similar problem in a BB in a membership organization I worked for. It went off-the-wall screwy. We did a survey and discovered that something like 80% of all posts were made by about ten people. It was closed down.

It does take time to moderate some threads. Folks just get too heated. Particularly so in these days of heated, political rhetoric across the country. I suggest folks take that energy and write their elected officials and local papers. You know, people that don’t have horses vote too.

I appreciate COTH’s existence. I wish I’d discovered it sooner. I’ve even clicked on a few ads to help them out. I participated in the political threads. Hope I didn’t add to the decision to close off OT.

I loved the OT part of COTH. I visited every day, along with Eventing, Trail, Around the Farm, and Off Course. I particularly liked the political part of OT because we have so many very knowledgeable members. They have been a big part of my better understanding of our government and the American public. Yes, there were some posters to that thread that I would have placed on Ignore if the Ignore Function worked. I just scrolled on by. I could always depend on the political thread to keep me abreast of what I needed to learn more about. I read two newspapers online as often as I can, but it is hard to keep up with things.

COTH is the only bulletin board that I frequent. The breadth of knowledge here is amazing. I will miss OT!

They tried that. See the Current Events forum???

Maybe, and not really hopeful, a bit more ‘hard line’ on topics that even resemble politics and just delete the thread (and warn the poster that started the thread) rather than trying to moderate and get people to play nice. Boom, thread gone. If a poster continues to start new political/current event posts, maybe they could be gone too (or at least blocked from OT). This strategy might take less time to moderate as the thread is there or it isn’t

I will miss the non-political/non-current-event part of OT. The political/current event part… not so much. I pretty much stopped even reading those threads because it was the same old arguments over and over and over.

It wasn’t just one person being awful. It was a bunch. What came to mind the most for me when I read the political thread was the woman who insulted another for voting for Trump, telling her she was stupid (in an underhanded way). The poor woman retaliated by stating she had an IQ of 147 and considers herself a good person, and then multitudes of women got extremely catty and told her it was stupid to tell people what her IQ was, it was classless and IQ doesn’t mean anything, blah blah blah. It was vicious and mean spirited. If people can agree to disagree, that’s one thing, but a group of women jumping on top of another and just pounding away at her self-esteem was sickening. She was trying to defend herself and they were just awful. I’m glad the thing got shut down. It was appropriate. There are better places for people to discuss politics and not slam one another in terrible ways. It ain’t here. As nice as everyone is about horse related subjects, they are not nice with political issues. I wasn’t great on it either, but I don’t take people calling me names sitting down (because that was the responses I got to my posts). The libs outnumber the conservatives 100 to 1 around here. Therefore the libs like to beat the conservatives to a bloody pulp and still feel like healthy human beings while doing it. That’s my take on it.

Interesting how you know so much about COTH when you’ve only been a member since July 31st. Hmmmm. Nineteen whole days.

Sigh. Annnnnnnnnnd this thread gets closed. And this is why we can’t have open free for all OT. (You couldn’t say “beat up”? Really? You had to use the words “gang bang”??? This board is supposed to be PG-13, right? Do you think a gang bang is PG-13?)

OT was way cooler when it was on holidays, or for special events, and when people were super excited to see it.

The board was so much better then. Maybe I’m just an old timer, reminiscing for the “old days.” Kids these days! Get off my lawn!

What an excellent observation.

I really preferred it back then. Before it even went to OT weeks, just an OT day or a weekend.
