YMMV, indeed.
OMG, call me a mean girl all you want but geeze… this forum is supposed to be for technical help on using the BB and now the back-and-forth type of postings that I’d be fairly convinced are the type of posts that got OT shut down have migrated here…
Sorry, but I think you are being disingenuous. You stated you could not understand how seemingly intelligent people could vote for President Trump and continue to support him. THAT is what I was responding to.
If you read through the entirety of my post and I encourage you to do so, I further stated that I now understand and that the numerous observations which were the basis for that understanding had been educational. Frankly, I wonder if you’re not responding to a popular trope (aka false narrative) to which I do not subscribe.
Aly
uh huh. And you honestly were not being facetious? Never mind. Pretty much nothing you might say would convince me. I’m out.
I’m going to post quickly before this thread goes away too.
Can’t tell you how many times I thought a poster was a woman and it turned out to be a man. Perhaps some of us just aren’t seeing the simpatico guys among us.
Tomorrow, I’m going to bring out my fall leaves and start decorating. It’s 95 out. I don’t care. o7o
The latest bickering on this thread shows why OT got shut down.
Some people should just step away from the keyboard.
I will miss OT. I found out about news before seeing it in the mainstream media…eg. Antonin Scalia’s and Aretha Franklin’s deaths…I enjoyed the dead parrot by John Cleese…and all the assorted other topics seen in OT.
I stayed away from anything political…though I have been known to type out a long reply then hit, Cancel.
And I do subscribe to the print edition of COTH.
I didn’t. Never visited regularly enough to participate, and it was only silly stuff anyhow. To have a discussion takes time. COTH did not become my preferred site until Off Topic was opened all the time.
Bit of a mess, though. All my devices default to COTH and I have to reroute them now.
You guys are absolutely correct. I am now in self imposed time out. It helps that I am off to Lamplight for the festival. Have a good week all.
But clearly it’s not them. It’s everyone else:rolleyes:
I am glad OT is gone and hope we go back to OT days. I mean really guys, y’all dragged your BS to the technical help forum. Get a grip.
I think the suggestion to sub to coth is a good one. Although I am horseless, I read some of the online articles. The bloopers article was funny. Been there, many times. Not that high up, but still…
you know @dotneko. And I prob have political differences. But I admire her talent and what she has accomplished quite a bit.
I think her screen name comes from dot and eko. Thusly, dotneko. And they were a force.
Apologies Dot, if I’ve got that wrong. But that’s what I got from reading about you in a non stalker context.
Take care. AB
I just subscribed. Is there a reason why no pay pal option. I still subscribed though.
Guys, um, why are you bickering here?
To paraphrase the sages of Monty Python,
“This is supposed to be a happy occasion. Let’s not bicker and argue over who killed who.”
I have some experience with moderating on the internet and so I appreciate the time and just personal trauma it can cause. This is especially so when you’re dealing with software you don’t control, because there aren’t a lot of tools to work with to make things easier.
I really enjoy the Chronicle forums in general and I also quite appreciate the off topic area in particular. I’ll discuss politics, yes, but mostly I love that it’s a community of people who are bonded through horses and have a hive mind that is expert on almost any topic. I helped someone with a database problem once, for example, and I’ve been helped with other dumb life things that I can’t remember. I’m poltroon, I’ve been here ahem nearly 20 years(!!), and y’all know me as well as you can know any person. You guys have helped me through good problems and bad ones, bonked me on the nose when I needed a wakeup call, and taught me about all kinds of things I didn’t know I didn’t know. This is an important source of community for me. So I do value that, and enough that I did get a print subscription to the Chronicle, which before the forums existed didn’t really hit my radar on the west coast.
So yes, I’ll miss it, especially when I’m not feeling like I can enjoy a thread on a topic that’s been done to death and can’t find horse things that get my attention.
But, I also respect the needs of the moderation team and hope this gives them the respite they need.
A thing I’d suggest to the mod team is to consider putting a tighter leash on alters. Probably you already did this behind the scenes, but if someone needs an alter to talk politics on a horse board they probably shouldn’t. There were accounts that posted prolifically in Off Topic and Current Events that ONLY ever posted in those forums, and I don’t think those were the better behaved posters. YMMV.
I wish there was a way for the group who wants OT to migrate to an un-moderated site.
Try Definitely Dressage if you need a fix.
You don’t, really, unmoderated sucks. (To a site that has a different policy, sure.)
To me, the sign of a site that is really well moderated is when you barely notice the Moderators doing anything, and yet for the most part, your reading experience is spam-free and productive. The COTH team is really very successful at making this place nice with a minimum of intrusion.
It’s interesting, by the way, to go about reading various sites’ rules for participation. The best are funny and breezy, but make the lines extremely clear. These are shockingly hard to write and to live by, but there are often some good ideas out there. When you are moderating, though, there is a certain “I know it when I see it” and you have to give yourself permission to be a heartless dictator sometimes.
Ummm…no.
I was pointing out how Tyrus’s Mom was jumped on for her opinion.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion but nobody is entitled to bullying.
Do you think new posters, alters should not be able to post in politics? Maybe a minimum post count? Just brainstorming here, not making accusations, but that seems to uniform in some other special interest forums…
the software has that ability to delay the ability to post for new members… .and also has a posting limit cap and or a time between posts ability which might cut down on some of the heated discussions… but knowing this crew they would just have several names to post under
So this is third or is it forth time that the rules cannot be followed that have lead to the forum shut downs? …and you expect the next time (if there is a next time) to be different?.. the political forum would been euthanized anywhere else
My theory is someone who was acting as a mod recently, who is more up-to-date with internet forums and has seen others out there 100x worse, has now returned back to college. And that someone else has returned who is less tolerant. And who caves to whiners.
While a valuable meeting place has been stopped.
Coincidentally, the same week that papers across the US united against Trump’s criticism of the press.
I don’t like it at all.
ETA: I do apologize for sounding ungrateful. And realize the work is a burden. I just don’t like the decision, or the explanation.
