Can we have an adult re-rider support group?

Well, crap.

Dublin’s snot came back. He finished his round of meds on Thurs/Fri. And its back today.

This was the fear all along. The next option is surgery, which I cannot do right now (money factors in, but mostly because the aftercare is pretty hands-on, which I cannot physically do). I am going to call the vet on Monday, but I’m leaning towards trying to find him a home who can properly take care of him.

Sorry to hear that Spacytracy!

I’m so sorry to hear that! When you say “find him a home,” you mean a temporary home, right?

Unfortunately, no. I can’t see anywhere that would take on his care that would not end up costing me way more than my budget can allow.

I’m not 100% on anything right now but I just don’t know how, in my current state, I can possibly take on essentially a rehab project while I’m not even permitted to lift anything.

If the infection keeps itself at bay, then I can muddle through. But in most cases, antibiotics just don’t work long-term and surgery is almost always necessary.

Well, I’m really sorry. I know how you feel.

Horses…they break our hearts, don’t they?

Dewey - So sorry to hear about the mare you ride. Your mentioning the head to cheek when you’re bridling reminds me of B when I’m buckling his blanket. He loves to get his head in the middle of it all. At first I thought it was annoyance, but now it just seems like nodding - and a little chance to nuzzle. How sad she is going, and how sad that the owner has to sell the others as well.

And Spacytracy - gee - you don’t have enough on your plate, do you? Any way you can keep Dublin on antiobiotics long enough for you to mend & care for him, or is the surgery a long recovery? Hope the vet has some good ideas. Hate that he would have to go!!

Kind of a crummy week. Of course the super short days are a bummer. It has been mostly rainy or drizzly or snowy here, although not much. The temps have been hovering around freezing - just enough to keep several inches of mud in the pastures. Went to ride yesterday and B was missing a new front winter shoe. Thank goodness there is very little hoof damage. Blacksmith will be here at his usual Monday time. So no riding this weekend. Tried to jog him around the indoor and he was really, really lazy.

Then a short while ago tonight, my brother called to tell me he needs a procedure this week to do with an artery near his heart. Still unsure what’s involved. I’m in my 50’s, and all my sibs are much older than I am. But for the most part in great health. My brother has a boat business and is always running around like a banshee. Hopefully this will get him to cut back, though, on some things he really overindulges in…

Here’s to turning a corner in 2012!

Thanks CV, I am going to call the vet back on Monday and see what she can suggest. My recovery is going to be at least 8 weeks. I’m not sure how long the antibiotics will be effective for, but we will talk about it.

Sending all the good ju-ju vibes in my arsenal your way Tracy.

Thanks, CV. Maybe someone will have some good news to report.

Dewey - I too am sorry about the mare you have been riding.

SpacyTracy - sorry to hear that snot has made another appearance. hope the vet has some positive news.

Yesterday’s schooling show at another barn was quite interesting.

My barnmates and I decide to enter an in-hand obstacle course class. None of us have ever done one. So, with a crash course from our trainer - off we go.
Finn and I walk in, walk over a pole. I turn him around and have to back him between to barrels and around a third. That was funny - me: move your butt this way. Finn: Hey mom, did you see those horses over there??? We get through it, trot a circle, walk a pole, trot ground poles and have to cross a bridge. Not a real bridge, just a thing on the ground. Finn walk across it like we do these things every day, ho hum. We ended up 2nd in that class.

Time to mount and get ready for our w/t class. First thing Finn does is the swing his butt away from the mounting block, just as I am about to swing aboard. Luckily, my trainer had him and they had a discussion about why he thought it was ok to do that.

By the time I get on, the 3 other horses and riders from our barn are round a corner of fence - completely visible. Finn has a fit - to the point that I almost jumped off and said that’s it. We go in the ring - the footing is horrible. We are walking - Finn is flipping his head. Trainer says, shorten reins. I do. Head flipping and pulling continues. I give with my hands just a bit - Finn leans and threatens to take it and go. This continues the whole class. If I asked him to trot -he tried to take off. Walking was a jig. I even backed him up to try and reset brain - as in, hello, rider up here. knock, kinock - anybody home? No. So we went in a small circle with my inside leg kicking. That didn’t either. This continues until the end of the class when we have to line up. Guess who does that part perfectly??? Yep. Needless to say, I did not get a ribbon!!!

The minute we go to ride out of the ring - the drama starts again.

For the rest of the day, I had one of the fearless teens ride him. Dork.

But, I did survive the w/t fiasco and I did not quit or end up in the dirt!

Thank you all for the good vibes, this am his nostril was wet but not yellow. Tonight it was dry! So I hope its a goofd sign. He has also been off his feed so i bought some probios, senior feed, and alfalfa pellets. I soaked his stategy with a little senior, and the pellets are still soaking. He went right for the feed so maybe he likes it in amash? I dosed him with some probios too in case the antibiotics have messed with his tummy and appetite.
Sorry this is poorly typed, im doimg it on a nook.

spacytracy: I hope this means he’ll continue to get better. Glad to hear his nose was dry.

Jaslyn: Sorry to hear your show was shaky, but I’m glad you survived it all! I need to get into show mode soon. It’s been 12 years since my last show.

CVPeg: Hope everything goes OK with your brother’s surgery.

My goals for the year: I’m going to give myself a lesson or two (out of the saddle for 3 weeks now) but after that, I’m going to canter every lesson. Even if it’s just for 1/2 a lap or a few strides. I would like to go to at least 3 local/schooling shows this year. I’d prefer to do flat classes, but my trainer may convince me to do some ground poles just to get used to doing ‘courses.’ And I would LOVE to be able to maybe do a crossrails/18" class by fall.

I also want to do a lot more riding in the open. I must be crazy, but riding in the ring makes me nervous and tense after a while. When I’m out and about in a field, I feel sharper and even a little braver.

Wow – just checking back in after being out of town this weekend, and so bummed about everyone’s bad news! Rough couple of days. I’ll me thinking good thoughts for everyone.

I’m glad to hear that Dublin may be doing better.

Sorry that Finn was being a stinker for you, Jaslyn, but every once in a while you have a bad ride. As adults, we go back for the next ride thinking about the bad one and being worried. The horse, of course, has forgotten all about that bad ride…and in fact forgot about it as soon as he saw his next meal! So don’t worry too much, and enjoy the next ride.

All I can say about our riding this weekend is COLD. Saturday wasn’t too bad, temps in the mid 30’s but a bit windy. I rode with the kids again, we did a “drill team” exercise to work on adjusting our pacing…shortening and lengthening strides. Our instructor puposely paired up horses with different strides (16.3 TB with 13.2 pony…evil!) so we had to work hard at staying in our pairs. There were lots of near crashes and a lot of laughng, but we finally got it.

Sunday is was below 20 and windy. I did not want to go to the barn. But I only have two days a week to ride, so I suited up in my warm riding gear and headed out. I was glad that I did, because Mahindra & I had a nice realxing ride, and managed to pull off a couple of decent lead changes. The footing was hard, so I tried not to overdo it.

Hope things get better soon for everyone who’s struggling.

Hinderella: I was in NYC this weekend, and could not believe how cold and windy it was Sunday! I can only imagine what it was like in Connecticut! You are my hero for suiting up and riding in that.

Thanks Hinderella and Opus - this was the first time I ever rode a horse whose brain had apparently fallen out on the ground!

At least I am pretty much off next week - there will be much riding!

Dewey- Sorry to hear about the mare you have been riding.

Spacytracy- hope this is the start of more good news for Dublin.

Jaslyn- sorry to hear the show didn’t go as planned, but at least you have a sense of humor about it!

I got out to ride both days this weekend. Saturday was great, worked in the area, cantered some lines of poles. My trainer was in the area too working a greenie and she commented that my eye was back and I was seeing all my distances. Still struggling with getting pitched forward. Horsie was a the definition of a made hunter, such a good boy!

Sunday- apparently got a racehorse out of the pasture instead of a hunter! First sign… tried to walk off when I was bridling him. Hello!!! Mounted off my friend’s pickup truck and he would.not.go.in.the.area. I let him win that battle (bad I know) as we were setting off on the trail ride. First part was okay but once we were along the driveway, he got lit and jigged the whole way. I begged off the 2nd half of the ride due to his lack of brains and good thing as they were charged by stray dogs and one of my friends got unseated when her horse spooked.

I went to the area and since he was being a brainless wonder of the “fun” ride, we got a “work” ride instead. Again he did not want to go into the area, but we got there with a little crop and a bunch of circling ever time he tried to back up. Hello…brain… what?? Once in the arean a lot of trot figure eights, trotting over cavaletti and then doing some shoulder in (of as close to it as I can get) at the walk. When we got done, it seemed like I had a hunter again.

Supposed to have a lesson tomorrow and I swear it looks like it might snow. 80% chance of rain tomorrow, but we might make it up on Thursday.

Winter- isn’t it fun!

Iechris, I think it’s pretty brave of you to head out on the trail! We haven’t been out in ages, and the cold windy weather has not made me want to try.

Fortunately, I still have some vacation time left, so I got to ride today. Temps in the 40s and not much wind, and the arena sand has softened up, so all in all, a very nice day. I’m lucky to have a pony tthat LOVES to ride. She comes to the gate and nickers for me every day, ready to go. I really hope I can turn her into a field hunter

Hey all, just wanted to report that Dublin is doing well, eating his food and snot free! Also wanted to say thanks for the well wishes and also for keeping the thread going. Gives me good stuff to read, and even if I dont respond I am enjoying reading about the riding adventures. My laptop died so typing on a nook is tough!

Yay Dublin! Still sending good vibes.

I wish I had a riding adventure to share. Closest I’ve come to anything exciting with the ponies is for S&G’s I tacked up my colt for the first time. Complete non issue. All that crazy stuff I’ve thrown at him since he came home as a weanling have paid off. Then I burst my own bubble and reminded myself it was very naughty (he’s 21mos old now) so he wore it for all of 5 minutes, I took it all off gave him lots of praise and vowed to not do it again until next fall. :frowning: I feel like a bad horsie mom.

There was a great bareback stroll around the pasture with the haffy, but nothing special. Need to get my mare back to the indoor, I crave red head mare training time. Fiend for it like a pack a day smoker on a 16 hour flight fiends for a smokey treat.
