Thanks, gang. For some reason the fear factor isn’t there. Maybe I am a bit of a nut, but I feel really comfortable. I guess I am focusing on the horse…I want to be confident for her. I also really like/trust my trainer and know she wouldn’t put me in a bad spot. I was so lucky to find a trainer I adore right away. This horse is a hunter derby prospect, so this is only the beginning and I better be ready for it

I love that we are all in different stages with different goals, but have the same passion! Fun to hear all the stories.

i did an unplanned dismount into the wall the december after i got the mare (i got her in september). we were trying to canter a 20 meter circle in the arena and she wasn’t balanced enough to do so. after that i was more than happy to work on the walk and trot and save the canter for the next summer when she was more balanced. and now, in contrast, we’re working on pirouettes.

I have to tell you guys - having to work all day and not being at the barn like I was last week has been really really hard!

The good news is that when I left the chiro yesterday - it was still light!!!

Good news spacytracy! The time you had off was cold & dark anyway

Yes jaslyn, the days are getting longer. I have a sunset/sunrise chart at my desk, and I think by next week I might be able to squeeze in a short ride after work on Friday, when I leave work at 4. And here in CT, we’re hoping for a nice weekend.

For any of you who have talked about trying hunting, check out the hunt forum. Hunter’s Rest has started a thread for the spring CotH hunt, and some dates are up there for consideration. She has only so many horses available to hunt, and it’s first come, first serve. So if you’re REALLY interested, post on the thread and then PM or email Hunter’s Rest for details.

However, please don’t say you’re going and then back out at the last minute. Naturally, emergencies can happen, but those limited horses are assigned quickly, and if you “sign up” and then don’t go, it could mean that someone else has missed the chance.

If you live nearby (VA) and aren’t sure about hunting yet but want to check it out, come and car follow for the day. It’s a great way to enjoy the hunt and see the hounds work!

Hinderella – I can’t do Spring, but I am hoping for Fall! Even if I just come and follow in a car.

Quasi-bad news from the vet yesterday – nothing that affects soundness, but I am the type who worries over every thing. When I bought Tajar in October of 2009, he ended up with 2 or 3 nodular sarcoids around this time of year. No big deal - they didn’t seem to bother him, and they went away pretty quickly when the vet injected them with some sort of chemo drug. In winter 2010, he got a few more, maybe 5. Same thing – vet injected and they went away. Now, in 2011, he has about 8 or 9. So, they are increasing each year in both quantity and size (the biggest are about the size of a quarter or half dollar). The vet will come every 3 weeks for the next 3 months (4 treatments with the injections). Then, he’ll shave the hair around the spots in early April (after the last treatment) so he can get a good look at them.

Two issues. First, I hope this doesn’t continue to get worse as he ages, and start to be uncomfortable for him. Second, he is going to look like he has mange with these bald spots when Spring hits, at the beginning of show season.

Has anyone on here had any experience with nodular sarcoids (not the erupted, oozy sarcoids - these are bumps under the skin, that feel like hard cysts)?

Good news is – I am back in the saddle tomorrow after 4 weeks away – YAY!

Had a pretty good lesson with the trainer I was testing out. It was a dressage-based lesson(!) which was interesting. Especially since the only letter I know is ‘X’. Seriously. She knows her stuff*, and she had me on a 17’2h Dutch warmblood. Wow. Y’know, I’m so used to riding and looking at TBs and QHs/crosses, I’d forgotten how cool WBs are built. He also required more leg than my normal lesson TB, and felt less responsive, but then again, new saddle, new horse, new trainer. But it went well, I survived, and he was a mellow guy, so I now have Lesson No. 1 on Mondays with my current trainer and Lesson No. 2 on Thursdays with my newest trainer.

Coolest thing? She’s bringing down some other horses of hers in Feb., and she’s looking to lease them out. And one’s an Oldenburg/Shire cross which sounds right up my alley. Free lease. Not hunter lease. I haven’t even laid eyes on him yet, but I’m already looking for a wide saddle, as I only have a M tree Crosby PDN right now for the TB I ride. (I’m leaning towards a Tekna and getting the gullet adjusted for him. Y’know, assuming I lease him.)

Oh, and the WB was WIDE. Doesn’t look wide until you’re on him. They have magically expanding sides or something.

Despite my best efforts, I still looked like an epileptic monkey while sitting a trot in a dressage saddle. I got it a couple times though. I just feel so WEIRD sitting on my butt and not my crotch.

So, a pretty good week.

Mine doesn’t fit B - had to buy a custom saddle for him - so much for the “free” horse. :lol: But I’m not about to give mine up. It was in my hallway until a couple weeks ago when it conflicted with all the Christmas decorations, and I had to put it in the outside storage. But I still visit it from time to time.

TarheelJD, I’m not familiar with the sarcoids you mention - B has some kind of cyst RIGHT where his girth goes behind his R elbow, but as long as I use a fleece girth, it’s not an issue, and it hasn’t changed so far. Did you try the Horse Care section?

Had some free time yesterday and it was one of those days when I thought: Wow, wish I lived closer to the barn and owned my horse so I could just ride without all the scheduling!! Hoping to start my 2 day a week part lease in Feb, but still waiting to work out details to make sure we can $$.

On the Crosby issue, I ride in my old crosby hampton classic circa 1994. Trainer says it puts me in a really good position and seems to fit the horses I have lessoned on. Glad I kept it all these years!! Now I am just trying to darken the leather…it is a tad orangey in color.

Well, I rode, and I lived! lol

Started off HORRIBLY. I left him loose for 5 seconds to grab a whip and off he goes, out the barn, down the driveway into my neighbor’s yard, almost in the road, cars stopped. I’m running, yelling for hubby.

JERK. I was so mad at that pony! Finally he ran BACK onto our property, and I thought, damn you, I’m riding.

It was a great ride, he was fine, my DD (4) took some pictures, so I apologize for the quality! lol. I take what I can get!

It wasn’t pretty, my one stirrup was twisted, I was on the wrong diagonal half the time, but I was RIDING. I cantered a few strides too which was really nice.

He was great, minus the GREAT ESCAPE. Now what to give the neighbors as an “I’m sorry my horse is an ASS” gift? Home Depot gift cert to fix the lawn? Hubby went over right afterwards and said there was no damage but I don’t believe it. Its so soggy out today I can’t imagine he didn’t turf it up a bit. I know OUR yard is!

Are you kidding? My trainer had some good school saddles, but they all had blocks and or knee pads on them. I felt so out of place on them, I decided to go out and buy a used pancake saddle to do my lessons in. I hopped on for the first time, and it was like ‘Oooooh, yeaaahhhh. THIS is how I remember riding.’

My old trainer, back in 97-99-ish, really, REALLY did not like us riding in anything but pancake saddles. Now I think I know why. My current trainer will sometimes school the horse I’m on, and she has a hard time riding in it. It’s a bit slippery, and there’s nothing to brace against. I love it!!

As for the possible lease – my head’s churning out ideas, BUT I’ll have to sit down and budget it all out. Because while I’m hoping to improve my riding leaps and bounds this year, I also know that I, on a personal level, I need to spend some money on me and my care.

And OF COURSE – on the same day I had my dressage lesson, I was told I may be the proud new recipient of 7 additional people to manage at work and a new title to boot. Which means more money. So, yeah, I was ‘spending’ money on a new saddle for a possible new lease not more than 10 minutes after the meeting with my boss.

I’m such a schmuck. :lol:

Opus, quite a difference betweeen a WB and TB, huh? the other barn i ride at has WBs. i like my Appendix QH. she’s not as much WORK!
