Can we have an adult re-rider support group?
I hope everyone is enjoying lovely and warm riding weather this week, wherever you are!
this past weekend was a travel to KY to watch daughter show in an IHSA show. she got a 3rd on saturday and a 4th on sunday in the advance walk/trot/canter division. the weather was sunny and warmish on sunday, and i horrified my son by saying that i was over winter. we’re normally big skiers, but with the lack of snow and warmer temps, i have sort of enjoyed the lack of winter. i know i’ve ridden more this winter than last, but that might also be because i don’t have to share the mare with my daughter!

Welcome Janiemerle! Glad you decided to post instead of just lurk!! Let us know how the riding goes on the weekend.

Hope everybody’s first week of fitness is going well. I got to the chiropractor Monday and I’m going again tomorrow. I’m feeling better so hope to join in the fitness group by next week. I have managed to ride this week though. We jumped a large-ish oxer in lesson today :). My daughter managed to make it through a whole lesson with no tears and actually quite big jumps for her. So I’m feeling happier tonight, despite working night shift with a Back on Track back support on :frowning:

Opus let us know how things are progressing with the lease!

It has been warm up here too so nice riding weather. Looking forward to hearing everyone’s fitness success stories on the weekend.

Just have to announce a happy thing… I took my two greenies to their first show ever last Thursday- and my first A show in 22 years- we drove the 6 hours to Rochester NY and had a blast doing the baby greens. What a hoot. We were about the only horses with a trace clip (it’s SO darned cold in the Adirondacks I can’t justify a full clip) and neatly trained manes, no braids… but we did it! And with just me and non-horsey hubby, I got both horses in the ring on time, and he even got little snippets of video while holding the other horse. Maybe I can figure out how to link them…

I did manage to go off course once, but that was the only bummer of the day (that and how little sleep we got!). Woolly did GREAT considering it was his first time alone in a show ring, despite my pilot error, reversing the first and last jumps. And he got a ribbon in the class that we weren’t off-course in, but the vid is from the one we were off-course:

Here’s Boo, a little more nervous, but actually got better ribbons… (if it works):

And here’s how Boo looked when we got home…

Thanks go out to the incredibly friendly folks at Lehman Farms Horse Show, especially Naomi and Gail.

Welcome janiemerle!

Congrats on a successful show kayteedee!

Weather here is co-opearting and it is in the low 70s today. THIS is southern winter! Had a great lesson yesterday, did a line with a 5 stride to a 1 stride with the back jump being a small vertical. I realized that in addition to just jumping in my practice rides, I really need to do at least one combination, as I CAN do them, then I won’t have that little pause I get sometimes when faced with them in lessons. Trainer did say she could see all the work I’ve been putting in lately.

Looking forward to tonight when I will ride under lights for the first time. Several of the college students did this last week and it was suggested to me. I talked it up Sunday and everyone wanted to come out! I was hoping to have a few people to ride with but we may have a full house (which gives me a total breakdown!).

Have not met any fitness goals this week, but have a so-so excuse of being hit from behind at a stop light on Monday night (no damage) and then hit from behind again stopping at a yellow light Tuesday morning (damage to the rear of my car). That put me off doing anything other than driving home very cautiously Tuesday night.

Greetings to all of the new folks! And if you’re really new to COTH, may I direct your attention to the now-open Off Topic Forum. We are celebrating Groundhog Day today, I guess. Whatever the reason, OT Day is always fun.

I burned a vacation day today, and am enjoying the weather. It’s around 65 and sunny. Some wind from the north, but that’s ok. Did some shopping, worked in the garden and greenhouse, and now am getting ready to go visit Mr. Stall Rest. Day 49. Must remember to bring him a new Uncle Jimmy’s ball since he’s been without for about a week. Don’t have a riding lesson until Saturday, but Tuesday’s lesson was great. Previously naughty lesson pony remembered me, and was just perfect.

Welcome Janiemarie! Hope you enjoy this thread and maybe you can be a sounding board for us trying to get in shape!

Katyeedee - I cant see the pics!!! :frowning:

Hey quick question…advice…

So I will be starting dressage lessons with a trainer who trains my neighbor (where I ride when my horse is at home).

When I show, I typically go alone, sans trainer/coach. And I plan on doing a couple of dressage shows. This trainer comes to most of them, and helps her students.

If I’m at the show, without soliciting her, and she comes over to help, what obligations am I under to pay her?

I know this is kind of silly but this could very well be a real kind of situation, and I really want to make sure I’m giving credit when its due.

Oh wow I almost missed the “I’m so out of shape!” conversation! Me too, me too! My trainer at one point was like “what do you do to exercise?” I was like um, ride? And, to be fair, I was WAY more in shape when I had my horse and was riding 5x/week than I was at the time of the conversation when I was only riding with her once a week. But I would really like to start doing crunches to strengthen my core.

I am also a big WW fan. I do it every January for three months (and then slack off horribly for the rest of the year and slowly gain it back, unhealthy I know.) But it is so easy to follow, you can eat whatever you want, you just aren’t allowed to stuff your face with no accountability. And it’s so easy to use the online version, or do it with an app on your phone.

So more bad news for me last night - there was a horse I was trying to work out a deal on but the selling trainer was acting kind of shady. Last night I finally found out he was purchased by someone else for DOUBLE the price I was quoted. Who does that??

Not only that, but it took me a few days to get my own trainer on the phone to even find out what was going on. And it turns out she was avoiding my calls because… she is going out of business! ARGH!!! I was up all night crying. This is SUCH a mess.

So now I have no horse, no trainer, no barn, no lessons, nothing but a saddle and a pair of boots. And a pair of puffy eyes. Ugh. This is supposed to be fun!!!

I’m not a re-rider but I enjoy reading this thread!

BonneAmie - where are you in DC? I might have a horse you could ride. Send me a PM

So I swear. I ALWAYS get hurt riding. And sometimes its not even by my own stupidity.

I have to work tonight so I have the day off. I decided to ride. No biggie. I did take an extra precaution to ride in my field which is fenced, because I was alone, figured, if I get dumped or something, at least its enclosed. Smart!

Well all was well. I was just going to walk/trot, because I could tell he was a little frisky. But my trot work was AMAZING. Very forward into the bridle and just lovely.

Then, all of a sudden, he kind of leaps/rears forward, and when we went up, his neck SLAMMED into my hand and bent my thumb back. Don’t ask me how. It happened so fast I cant even remember if we were walking or trotting. All I know is my lovely grass is all turfed up from him.

I don’t know what happened. I do know that there was no warning and it was literally out of nowhere. I don’t know if he was just feeling good or something spooked him.

I had to get off because it hurt so bad (still does!!) and then I got back on because I did NOT want him thinking that he got his way, if in fact he was being a poophead.

Finished the ride nicely and then nursed my hand.

Hi, Spacy! Tell your horse he’s had his Spring Fling already, so now he needs to settle down. Think he’ll listen??? Hope your hand is ok.

BonneAmmy, you also have no difficult-to-get-out-of trainer/horse/barn situation. You have all of the makings for a fresh start. Sometimes that works out for the better. Good luck, and check in here if you need support, a gentle push, or a great big shove.

ST how is your hand feeling? I know how you feel, i got stepped on last week and I’m sure my toe is broken. It was stupid and my own fault. Fortunately my back is so sore this week that I hardly even notice my toe anymore!

So I need some advice and I thought you guys would be the best people to ask. I put on my favourite shirt and winter breeches this morning and within 5 minutes was so incredibly itchy I had to take them off. After some thought I realized that I had clipped my son’s horse wearing this very outfit. Now both of these items have been laundered but when i looked at them there are a bazillion teeny hairs stuck in the fabric!!! How in the world do I get them out? Did I mention that this was my favourite shirt and my only winter breeches and that it’s cold up here in Canada?? Can somebody help me??

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. Not too cold and very sunny here today

I got to ride today! squeal I rode the entire lesson on a bareback pad. After the butterflies settled down, I was… ok. My position was good, my balance was mostly ok, but I really just need to mentally get over my last bad fall (years ago). I swear any time we went faster than a fast walk, I could feel myself tense up. No reason other than the ghosts in my head. As my trainer said, I just need to ride through it and focus on relaxing. deep breathe I will, I will.

And I was a proud mama seeing my daughter trotting around the ring with a big smile on her face.

All in all, I’m excited to be back on horseback.

Way to go Janie! How are the riding muscles feeing today?

So how did everyone do with their fitness goals this week? Do we have new ones for next week? I didn’t manage anything but riding this week due to the nasty back pain, but I’m hoping to find time for some pilates and yoga this week if my back and foolish work schedule allow it. So sad to see the end of the weekend so soon :frowning:

SpacyTracy- I feel your pain- I got bit in the butt yesterday by the horse I lease! It was not bad- only a small mark… I think she had feet issues as a baby and now does not like them handled and is notoriously bad for the farrier…I won’t be turning my back on her again!

Other than that I had a good lesson… although I am still struggling with my gripping leg. Trying to relax it and let it be long…any ideas?? I don’t realize I am doing it until I release it.

As for fitness goals, I admit I have been slacking! :frowning:

Boy, am I out of the loop! Welcome to all the new re-riders!

Best laid plans and all that - boss out of town Thurs and Fri - should have been able to get an afternoon off to ride, but didn’t.

As to a work out: Does is count that I shlepped feed for 15 horses yesterday and today; dumped 30 water buckets (some really really full); cleaned about 15 stalls, spread shavings in about half (there were two of us), fetched hay and then brought all the kids in and fed last night?

Same routine for today, except I won’t be doing night feed. And managed to ride my horse today. We played with a gymnastic with 2 itty bitty cross rails - walked over the first part and the first x, then trotted to the end which was also an x. First time, Finn a champ. Do it again and we are rushing, and rushing, and rushing.

Can’t figure what I am doing wrong - if I ask him to just trot an x with me posting, all good. But, ask him to trot to and over with me in half seat - he runs at it. Luckily I have a lesson next Saturday. My trainer will fix it - she fixes everything!

ST - you made my thumb hurt just reading about your injury! Hope you are feeling better!

HazelG, I’m afraid all I can suggest for those tiny hairs is plenty of time with a vacuum cleaner…more laundering might help, or you might just have very clean little hairs.

Oh, SpacyTracy, Ouch! I’m so sorry- I hope it’s starting to feel a bit better.

I have come to the conclusion that JJ absolutely is hurting somehow during riding, and it’s not him being belligerent like he is prine to. He’s fine on the lunge, and then when riding he was OK-ish to the left, but still a bit unhappy. As soon as we switched to going right, his ears pinned more and an IMMEDIATE buck just at the trot. I really think it’s the saddle somehow. used to fit him great, but he has become a lot more muscular since I got him over a year ago. So I have a saddle fitter/physiotherapist-type lady coming out, but couldn’t get an appointment that worked for us both until the 17th. So, I’m kind of sad that I won’t be making the show this coming weekend- our first of the season- as planned. But even more concerned that he’s hurty and I am not sure what’s wrong yet. I hope it’s the saddle and nothing with his health.

So sorry for JJ PaintedHunter. I hope they can figure out what is ailing him and it gets fixed up quickly so you all can get back on track with your show season.

spacytracy - hope the hand is feeling better. Same with your back HazelG.

I did pretty well on the eating well front last week, but I had no time to execise. Work has been unreal. I did not get to go to the barn this weekend at all, because I was at my office 12 hours per day Saturday and today. But I am hoping I can sneak away at some point next week for a mid-week lesson to partially make up for it. UGH - it sucks having to work to pay the horse bills. I liked it better when I was a kid and didn’t have the responsibility end of things!

PaintedHunter, sorry your horse hasn’t been himself. Hope it doesn’t turn out to be anything serious.

Spacytracy, I was so sorry to read about your hand! Ouch! Get well soon. Same to you, HazelG.

I did very well on my exercise goals for Tuesday, but not for Thursday or Saturday. I was busy, busy, busy, so I will try again for the same goals for next week: 30 minutes of aerobic exercise and 10 minutes of strength exercise on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

I did ride three times this week as usual, and green mare has been so good this week. She has been jumping little verticals (2’) softly and quietly. She did a little course Thursday and today. She even did one lead swap in each direction without my asking her. What a good girl!

Hi all, hand is doing ok, still hurts if I move it to extremes but getting better. Had a great ride on pony today!

Workouts last week went very well - went to the gym three times, and started Couch to 5K. Hoping to be able to run a 5k in a respectable time by May. Eating-wise, I was terrible. I have no food willpower.
