You didn’t speak out of turn. I know that I sounded semi-hysterical.
I have some kind of stomach flu and I am miserable!
trying to work and clients are logging support tickets at 8, 9pm and all I want to do is barf and go back to sleep!
In other news, though, one of my new trainer’s clients just bought a really adorable 15.2 QH that she is interested in half leasing, so I may have found my solution to the horse issue for the time being. If I can ever get out of bed and go meet him, of course
Get well soon, wntrwhte! Ugh, I hate throwing up. You have my sympathy!
The horse sounds great! I can’t wait to find out how he works out! Maybe he will send you some good healing vibes!
Hi everyone! Have been reading all your posts, don’t have much to report on my end so just been kinda lurking.
I went back to work on Tuesday, it was alright. Its tough and its painful but I’ll be ok! I think pushing myself a little bit will help.
I’ve been slowly working back to caring for the horses. Thankfully they’re easy! Except its been sleeting all day so I’ve been stalling them at night which equals stall cleaning duty in the am. No biggie, I just go slow and don’t pick up too much.
Gave the dirtiest one a bath, because he’s going up to my trainer’s place soon and I can’t send him looking like that!
Opus, he sounds divine. So let me get this straight: you get to half-lease him for a month as a trial period? (Just make sure that he has good feet!:lol::lol:)
Yep. 1/2 lease, then full lease, then (hopefully) a chance to buy. I haven’t actually said the word ‘buy’ to her just yet. I want to maybe get through the next couple of weeks and see what happens. I did tell her if she found a suitable buyer, I had no problem with her selling him. But once I get through the 1/2 lease (or it comes up in general conversation) I’ll have the purchase-as-I-lease discussion with her.
I also want to get Trainer No. 1 out to ride this guy (and watch me ride) before I decide to go to a full lease.
And if I lease I’ll be getting major medical and mortality insurance on him.
Agreed – I sounded the same way, if not worse.
So, HazelG, no worries.
I want to look into insurance as well…any idea what it would cost? I haven’t owned a horse since the dark ages, and I am positive my parents never insured any animal we owned.
I talked a little about this to the B/O when I first broached the idea of buying my mare, and she seemed to think I could do it for not too much. I guess this will be the next item on the agenda.
I just emailed American Equine Insurance to ask as well. I figured its alot cheaper than paying outright for colic surgery
Wntrwhte hope you’re feeling better soon. I’m also a member of the “I hate throwing up more than anything” group. If it’s any consolation (probably not) my daughter threw up at WEF 2 weeks ago
Opus the lease progression thing sounds great. I’m all for getting your trainer on him. I love it when my trainer rides my horse, she feels and fixes all sorts of things I have no clue were even there!
Dewey did the contract arrive?
I’m also all for insurance. I have my horse and my son’s horse insured for mortality and major medical to 10 thousand each. My pony is too old so they will only insure him for “named perils” like if he gets struck by lightning or barn fire. The leased pony is insured separately, it was part of the lease agreement. I also have a bit on my tack. They let me pay monthly and it is just under 300 a month, if that helps any. Not sure if it’s different here in Canada, but I would think same ballpark. When my first pony colicked and had surgery it cost me more than 5 years worth of insurance. And then he didn’t
make it. so I think it’s worth the expense.
Glad you’re up and around Spacytracy. Don’t overdo things too fast!
Just met the owner at the barn, signed the papers, and gave him a check…she’s mine! And after all the panic attacks, I feel pretty good. Thanks for all your support, everyone. DH and I are having a beer to celebrate! Well, I’m celebrating…he’s being supportive.
I even banged her tail…way down low by her ankles. B/O won’t like it, but too bad! She’s my horse!
I also talked to a woman there about insurance…this woman’s daughter’s horse has been through everything including stem cell surgery…the insurance covered everything. She’s going to give me info next week.
In the meantime, here’s a pic of me and Sky:

Hey everyone! I have been out of the loop for so long, it just took me a good 20-25 minutes to catch up on all the posts. Can’t believe we passed the 1,000 mark - that’s pretty cool. And there are some new folks.
My life imploded at the begnning of February when I had a client end up with a big emergency. I am still in the midst of it, and not sure when things will slow down at work.
Then I had to go home to New Orleans for a couple of family obligations associated with Carnival and a wedding the weekend afterward (the 25th). I worked remotely a good bit of the time I was there, so it really wasn’t much fun. Came home from New Orleans after the wedding and immediately went out of town on Tuesday for meeting - just a day trip, thankfully. But more dreaded time on airplanes.
Oh, and in the midst of all of this, I caught a cold which turned into a serious upper respiratory infection, and I worked from home today so I wouldn’t cough all over everyone in my office.
Oh, and one other thing – on Monday night I had to rush my 12.5 year old Weimaraner to the ER vet for an ear hematoma! She is cruising around the house now in a cone of shame, which hopefully will prevent her from messing with her ear while it tries to heal on its own. If it doesn’t heal be itself, she’ll have to have surgery, which I really want to avoid at her age.
Finally, because of all of this, I’ve only gotten to ride once since 1/29 (that was on 2/10).
OK - whine over.
Dewey and Opus – I totally understand your nervousness - but it sounds like you have both done your due dilligence and know what you are getting yourself into. And Opus’ deal is great – basically an extended trial.
I was one of those insane people who bought a horse I had only ridden once. But my trainer, who I have great faith in, thought we were a good match, and I knew I could sell her to him if it didn’t work out. Now of course, he is my equine child, and I’ll never sell him. If I end up needing a different horse one day, he’ll just be retired – which I am sure would suit him just fine.
I agree with Dewey that anything can happen, and it is always a cautious leap of faith with horses, if not financially, certainly emotionally.
I am a big fan of insurance – I have mortality and major medical with Great American. If, at the end of Tajar’s life, I have never had to use it, I will be happy to say I wasted the money. For now it gives me great peace of mind to know I have it in case something really serious happens to him.
As some of you may know from my previous posts, Tajar and I were having a bit of a communication gap at the end of 2011, and he has been in a pretty serious training regine since md-December, so I am anxious to get back to the barn to see how he’s doing. And to get back on him after this long break and see how we do together.
With all of the work stress, I think I am going to try the “cocktail before the ride” method of unwinding so I won’t be all tense.
If my cough is improved enough, I’ll be riding Saturday. But even if I don’t feel well enough to ride, I will definitely be going out to the barn to hug my boy, groom him, give him treats, and lay my head on his neck for a big whiff of his horsie scent.
spacytracy - glad you are recovering well from your unexpected surgery. You are a real trooper. I know how frustraing it is.
Sorry for the long, disjointed post - that is what cough syrup with codeine in it will do to you!
P.S. One more thing – is anyone on here planning to go to Rolex? I’m thinking about it. If some of us go, we need to get together while we’re there.

YAY DEWEY!!! Wish I was there to give you a bottle of champagne to celebrate. Good luck trying to sleep tonight!
Congratulations, Dewey! Looking forward to proud mom bragging posts!
Yay Dewey!
Major Medical, Mortality, and Loss of Use coverage on my horse back when I last paid the bill (2004, when I sold the horse) was about $60/mo for a horse with an appraised value of $20k.
It’s not too expensive. I carry medical insurance on my dog now-- it’s worth it.
Wow! Then in my case it will be wayyy less than that. My pony probably isn’t worth more than a few grand. My biggest thing is major medical. Totally worth it if I need colic surgery or something.
Dewey! CONGRATULATIONS!!! How exciting!!! Have you perused through Smartpak and Dover catalogs and picked out all sorts of stuff yet? Or at least daydreamed about it???
Tarjheel, I’m so sorry you’ve had such a hectic time lately!!!
Thanks, everyone. I’m pretty excited!
Sky isn’t worth anything like $20K, so insurance should be pretty affordable.
And spacytracy, I’m trying not to go crazy! I do want to buy her a halter plate, though. It’s fun to have something personalized. Should I get the sire and dam’s names on there or just hers? Decisions, decisions.

Make sure if you do insure that you put their number on your stall somewhere. A lot of insurance companies require notification at time of incident in the case of major medical or death claims. When I was with Markel they gave you a little card with instructions to put on the stall door.
Thanks for the tip. Sky lives outside, so I will have to leave the number with the B/O and make sure everyone knows where it is.
Also, make sure your insurance policy is a “declared value” policy so if something happens, you aren’t in the position of having to justify the amount you insured her for.
Congratulations, Dewey! And what a beautiful picture too! Isn’t it fun now to start thinking of all those things you want for her (stall nameplate for instance?). I try to keep myself to just daydreaming - I can waste HOURS online looking at all the online catalogs, just thinking of things I could get my guy I just put in an order to Smarkpak yesterday. At least I can justify it as things we need for the upcoming show season!
Rode him again today! He was a really good boy. I was surprised that it actually took a little leg to get him going the first couple times – I was under the impression he would break into a piaffe if I so much as sneezed. (Kidding.) But I got him to go on the bit once, and then he did it all by himself after that. Pretty cool! For someone who’s used to riding around in a somewhat loose rein and purposely not being in a horse’s mouth, it’s an odd feeling.
AND the owner (Trainer No. 2 - I just get tired of typing it out) was very, very pleased by my ride today and she was really happy with the way I rode. So, it was a pretty darn good lesson.
Then on Monday, with Trainer No. 1, I’ll be back to cantering again. Weather permitting.

I know it all depends on a horse’s age, value, what discipline/level the horse competes at. At least, IIRC. I’ve seen some quotes as low as $400-500 for the year, and I’ve seen some go up to $1,000 or more.
For me, I’ll have to get with the owner and see what she thinks will be best.
Natalie A: Good luck with the city barn!! I know you’ve been without riding for a while now, so I’m pulling for you.
Dewey: CONGRATS!! I’m so happy it worked out for you! Maybe some of that luck will rub off on me in the next month or so.
TarheelJD: Throw one back. Seriously. I’m going to do it again on Monday, weather permitting. I would have done it Tuesday and today, but I ride with Trainer No. 2 on days I’m at work, so …
