Can we have an adult re-rider support group?
I have been listening for news about the storm…so far it sounds as if south Georgia was spared. Opus…?
I wish. We’re getting ours today it seems.

We just got through with an hour-long Tornado Warning, if you can believe that. I drove through one of the cells coming into work today, and didn’t know that would be the cell that was freaking out the National Weather Service.

No touchdowns – yet. But there’s some seriously wicked bands coming out of the Gulf, and it looks like it’ll continue into the night.

Tarheel: So glad to hear everyone’s OK! I can’t imagine.

Everyone else: Please be careful out there.

I was reading in the paper about the aftermath of the weather in the States. Are all you guys safe and sound out there? We are cold up here in Canada but nothing like you guys have had. Everybody and their horses safe?

I am fine, Hazel–nothing materialized here.

We had an F3 touch down (and up and down) for about 8 miles down here in South Georgia, in the Lanier-Berrien County area. No deaths or serious injuries, although it tore up some trailers and houses pretty good. Lots of downed trees and power lines, but that’s about the extent of it.

We had several tornadoes nearby, but none right where I am. Several barns in the area were destroyed including one full of horses (just south of where I am in Crittenden, KY). There has been a lot of discussion around here about what we should be doing better in terms of disaster preparedness.

Then we woke up this morning to 1-2 inches of snow and some black ice. Accidents all over the freeways. Colic is certainly a concern, along with flare-ups of arthritis.

Fun times thanks to Mother Nature.

Thanks for the updates guys. i’m glad you’re all safe. Tarheel how are things?

SpacyTracy how are you feeling? Did you get your pony to your trainer’s okay? I saw your picture of him on onother thread, is he a Haflinger?

Opus, have you ridden him again or are you still away?

Calling for warmer weather here the rest of this week. Hooray

Glad everyone on here is ok, I am so sad reading the news of people dying.

I’m doing alright! My friend was nice enough to bring my trainer’s trailer down for me so I didn’t have to drive up there to get it, thus eliminating 2 trips for me.

Lucky was UP - spring fever! Got on the trailer fine, then while waiting to put him out with the other horses, I used the whip to tap the other horses back, and he sprung straight up in the air and slammed down on my friend’s foot.

We put him out and he was fine - we were worried because they have a new horse that is kind of bossy and mean, and since Lucky is the smallest, we were concerned (hence the whip being present). Well, I think Lucky decided he was going to pretend he was insane, and started ripping around like an idiot, bucking and rearing, and running at them. So he went mental on them and they all stared at him like “WHAT IS THAT”.

Now he and the meany are BFF. Smart pony.

Hazel, yes, he’s a half-haflinger. lol. A Halfie. The other half is QH. He’s a conformational nightmare.

Glad everyone is OK!

And spacytracy - glad Lucky settled in well, and made friends with the boss.

We spent the weekend cleaning up what we could at the barn. My trainer is now dealing with the insurance company – hopefuly that won’t be too painful.

With everything going on, and all the work at the barn to be done, I did not ride this weekend. So, I am now on an even longer streak of being out of the saddle. This weekend can’t come fast enough, so I can get back on a horse!

On a plane to New England now – gotta love inflight internet on Delta, great opportunity to catch up on COTH.

Wow, inflight Internet–is that free?

No its not free, and I hate it. My boss spends a lot of time on planes, its my only opportunity to be out of his reach. Fortunately he travels mostly overseas, so is not on Delta too often but it will soon be available on all airlines. :frowning:

Tarheel, omg- so so glad that everyone was OK! How scary for everyone.

Well, I talked to the saddle fitter again about my dumb-dumb bucker. We are going to try a bigger girth size, more heating pad use, and put him on u-guard. She said that JJ appeared to be in the top 5-10% of most sensitive horses she’s had to work with, and he may be simply dramatic about mild discomfort. And maybe he has low-grade stomach issues that aren’t presenting themselves as full-blown ulcers.

So, we’re going to try this and see what happens. I have NO CLUE what to do after this if it doesn’t make him happy :frowning: I don’t want to sell him. I don’t want it to be a behavioral issue - I don’t have the time to fix him if it is, and I am so in love with him anyways, bucking and anger issues under saddle aside, that I don’t want to sell him! On his good days, he is BRILLIANT. he has all the potential in the world.

But I’ve tried so many things…I’m soon to run out of options.

Nope, not since Thursday. Although I did ride at my other place yesterday and had a pretty good ride. It was windy, the guy I ride spooked while I was leading him - at a horse. He was kind of pissy, which made me pissy, and the wind made riding uncomfortable. Which is a shame, because I was right there and was in the mood to canter him – and then the spookiness/pissiness came up and I was like, ‘Eh, maybe I’ll wait.’ :sigh:

I am set to ride possible lease again on Thursday, assuming my trainer doesn’t go up to get her Westphalian gelding and bring him down later in the week.

This is my hell month at work, so my riding may be limited for the next week or two.

That damn wind we’ve had since this past weekend here has been hell, Opus! Damn ponies spooking at everything. JJ spooked at a shovel on the ground, and he pretty much never spooks.

So sorry to hear about the farm Tarheel, but thank heavens everyone was safe.

Hinderella, hrm…mine wasn’t a surgical colic (“just” an impaction)…maybe it’s still worth getting regardless. If he’d pull a suspensory or something that would likely be covered. Probably worth it. Would be hard to find his “current value” though…maybe HR could evaluate that if I can get down there.

Was away for work all weekend so I haven’t ridden sigh I hate this inconsistency!

Thankfully, it seems to have died down quite a bit. Sunday was a nightmare and Monday was only slightly better. The same horse he spooked at was galloping and kicking and farting and bucking all over the place in the paddock next to the dressage ring. Awesome day. Really.

Wow - everyone is dealing with such rough weather! Storms, tornadoes, now wind? We had a pretty nice day here in Ohio/Kentucky area - some breezy/windiness, but nothing major. Nice temperatures too. I got to hack out around our barn’s property with a couple other boarders and was ever so grateful to have my nice calm gelding! I was with three other mares who were not so steady and my guy was most certainly the level head. He’s been off the track for a couple of years and I’m glad to see his mellow personality.

OneGrayPony - how long ago was your horse’s colic? Have you noticed any issues with the weather swings? Mine just had a medical colic this past December so anything makes me nervous with him!

$9.95 for the duration of the flight.

Farrier shod the mare last Wednesday…she’s been too sore to ride since then. I tried twice. I think he tried to solve all her foot problems with one shoeing!

DD is home from college on spring break. She went to the barn with me yesterday to ride her beloved Jack, who is being sold. We had a good ride together; since Sky was so sore, I hopped on someone else.

Tarheel- horrible about your trainer’s barn but very good that everyone is okay.

We had horrible wind on Sunday and I’m not even sure why I went to the barn and not dressed warmly enough at that. Got off when I decided I wasn’t getting anything accomplished and wasn’t even having fun. Then it started hailing.

No lesson today at the vet was there for spring shots and “brain surgery” for last year’s baby. I did ride and had a bit more horse than I was expecting, so mainly did a bunch of cantering.

Vet visit today for Mr. Stall Rest. He did trot quietly on the lunge line (better living through chemistry) but was still off enough that the vet wants him to have another month off and then recheck. The good news is that he asked the barn to set up a double-stall-sized outside area on some grass so he could get some outside time. The original idea of turning him out in the round pen is a no-go because the round pen is too large.

Meanwhile, the very nice sale horse I was riding got sold, so I’m back to riding lesson horses. They’re wonderful steady horses, but it’s not the same as riding a nice Adult Hunter.
