Can we have an adult re-rider support group?

OTTB ![]( live up in the NE ohio area if you go up 71 you will eventually get to the exit where you can hop off at and go across about 30ish miles to get to my place…
Yes I grew up in ohio so it is difficult for me not to end the previous sentence with an ''AT"… , and when I go south I go down aka going in the direction of th river and north is up aka direction of the lake Across either east or west depending on which you need at the moment it is just assumed the reciepent knows… and I waRsh my car and the capitul(aka capital to the rest of the world) looses a sylabol(sp) somewhere but only if you grew up there… ;)… Columbus(Ko-lum-bus) becomes clumbus(Klum-bus)…And of course we have proper cities though no not proper ones… As in we went to Cleveland proper.

And yes my granny and gramps were school teachers would swear until the day theiy died that those green things that flavor foods that can also come in the color of yellow and red are called mangos and those fruits of the same names are definatly not mangos… Oh yeah the rest of the world calls those green things either green pepers or bell pepers…

Every grammar/ english teacher nightmare to have someone from ohio land in ther classroom if they are not from ohio… lol ask me how I know…

I have the highest reguard for teachers. I really do. I just do not like what their union has done to them and our children but that is a whole other thread and rant… probably best kept for a whole other board compleatly one not frequented by teachers retired or active… living or dead…

I really did not stop riding I just slowed down a lot to where it felt to me lke I had stopped riding. I went to college rode and showed my horse until marrage and move across the country to live with military dh… still flew ‘‘home’’ on occasion to show horse as well as friends horses. then had kid and got ill… hung up irons kinda sorta rode for ‘‘fun’’ not in shows for a few years until drs fixed me… then started showing again until much to dh and I, and drs suprise kidlet #2 was on way… was under dr orders not to go with in 100yrds of horse because they knew would not be able to resist temptation to hop on horse… as soon as could after #2ds was born aka as soon as 40+drs gave their ok you may now go back to riding I did… That was the only way dh would bring my stuff back from ship he was on… where chaplin had it under lock and key…they had to see it in writing… I rode for the mileage/experiance /fun /just to be able to ride not for $$$ other peoples horses military did not pay enough to support horse 2 kids house, etc on E5 20 yrs ago well almost 20 yrs ago…

After dh got out of AD military I/we returned home to tend to dieing parent. Been here ever since. After living in ‘‘big cities’’ I kinda enjoy the ‘‘big cities’’ of ohio yeah we have columbus, cleveland, cinn… but even those compaired to san diego, los angles, philly, NYC, DC, etc are small in poplation and drivers… and where I live I live on a main street and well it is close to rush hour and gee in the last 5 minutes maybe 8 vehicles have gone by in both directions and that includes school buses… it is 7:30…

The bone I broke egins with a C I think and I am sure I will slaughter the spelling it is the cubiod bone if you look down at your foot wait a sec let me see if i can find a pic of a skeleton of the foot…
[IMG]http://home.mindspring.com/~amfatc/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/bonesoffoot.jpg)

wow wadda you know I spelled it correctly… I have what is called a nutcracker break along the cubiod bone… intrestingly enough this break is commenly found in girls who ride horses and is normally found after they fall off their horses … Silly me I did not do this break properly…
http://www.eorthopod.com/content/why-is-a-cuboid-nutcracker-fracture-serious

i did the break after watching the monkees marathon actually honestly after falling asleep watching the monkee’s marathon on my couch and taking a funky step…

As of last Thrus I have a minimum of 6 wks recovery. Dr wants to see progress in another mm 3wks from last thurs so what 2 1/2wks from now ( my life is in my phone if I loose that Im screwed)… that is not counting physical tourture, if any surgery may be indicated , or more cast time… concidering my luck Im thinking I will be lucky to hop on my own horse by Aug. …

Beautiful weather we’re having huh… supposed to hit low to mid 60’s today

Bumknees, I’m sorry you are laid up for awhile, been there, done that.

I get to ride this weekend, yay! I’m so excited! Had a little girl ride him yesterday and he was a stubborn pony, but I think if she keeps riding him, she’ll figure it out and so will he. I was glad to know that he’s at least SAFE.

pony - I’m so sorry your guy is stuck on bedrest for a few more weeks. And for the fact that your barn isn’t cooperating with your requests.

Opus - hope you can finally get to ride soon!!!

Sorry, I haven’t read past this current page! Hope everyone has a fantastic week and can get out and enjoy this beautiful weather!!

Hi, everyone–I took a stray cat cat to the vet today–he has been hanging around our garage for months, coming and going. He has been helping himself to our cats’ food, which I didn’t mind. I decided to take him to the vet to be neutered and just found out he has the feline leukemia virus. Ugh. Now I am waiting for the vet to call me back. (He left a message, which is how I found out.)

I am afraid I am going to have to put him down, which I feel terrible about, but he isn’t an indoor cat, and we have other cats that could become infected. I know come cats live long lives with the virus, but since he is an outdoor wanderer, I don’t know if I can just let him loose in good conscience.

Not a fun day so far.

I’m sorry Dewey, I think putting the kitty to sleep is a good choice. You don’t want to infect other cats. Sorry you have to deal with this.

I got to ride my baby Sat & Sun. Yah. I even had a small leap/spook on Sun. It was cold and windy. I am getting more confident with him, still miss my old guy.

Dewey: My daughter reminded me about our rescued stray we took in last year. She did not have leukemia but she went blind after 2 months and we had to put her down. She had a head injury, jaw injury and a severe infection in her eyes and nose. So sorry, she was loved but we had to say good-bye to her. Hugs.

Sorry Dewey. We routinely get drop offs with FLV. It’s terrible…

Had another wonderful ride on the boy. Seems that CONSISTENCY is a good thing for him snort.

Wish I could provide that to him all the time, but I’m working on it. It’s kind of funny to have a horse for so long and to just now be working him…but…meh, such is the life of an adult ammy with a green horse.

It was windy and he was a tad on the spooky/pissy side when I pulled him out of the pasture, but we worked through it and got nice canters in both directions and he stayed relaxed afterwards.

WIN!

We also got to work in the arena with other horses, which is unusual because of our normal hours. He was a bit perplexed at first, but then was fine with it. I was going to do hillwork with him after our arena ride but I was so pleased with his canter work that I let him quit and hosed him down, his first full water experience of the year - YES.

Tomorrow he gets a bath (which he sorely sorely needs) and all prettied up, and then we head to VA for two whole weeks! Well, HE goes for two whole weeks. I am going for 4 days and then hopefully 4 more days if my husband doesn’t disown me after the first four.

And then we MIGHT show on the 7th…just an itty bitty schooling show…maybe just to go travel. Exciting stuff!

I’m reading all these posts, and starting to wonder if there is a conspiracy afoot. Because today, B was a gentleman, and I’m almost believing now that the weather is getting better, there is hope for a quiet?!? horse? Even though yesterday he ran through his taped pen, dragging the tape with him, into another, and brought that one down, too. One thing I’m not crazy about is that the place is not watched regularly… Good thing we are way off, way off main roads, and that he just hung around the barnyard, and is fine except for a couple of superficial scrapes. He also will be waiting a couple more weeks before they are back in the fields. Won’t be a day too soon.

Anyway, I’m wondering if there is a secret national horse calendar out there, and they are all coordinating their misdeeds - bucking, infirmities, etc., and then when it is time to “give” and let us know that yes, they can be good, they coordinate that as well. Because we all seem to be writing about similar experiences over this winter. After reading so many threads on the board the past several months, I really do believe there is something going on, that not even the most thoroughly industrious COTHer can zero in on.

It was a beautiful day today. I expected B to really let it out when I turned him loose in the indoor. He rolled, and walked back to me. I brushed him off, put his tack on, rode him 20 minutes. He was p-e-r-f-e-c-t and I was done. Huh?

And all joking aside, I am constantly trying to figure out B as well. Paintedhunter, the discussion of PSSM had me looking into this as well thanks to you, although B has consistently been a challenge, so perhaps not. My latest issue w/ the barn trainer is that they are suggesting “Parelli type” training, which I have been wavering at. And only may consider because their terminology here is not always precise. If it is simply some natural horsemanship methods they wish to look into, perhaps. But I, too, find that the more I spend one on one time with B on the ground, and as I give him praise under saddle, the more he is a doll. Just have to keep on our toes about what works for us.

And we, too, had sad pet news today. My sister’s Australian terrier passed away yesterday. She was a hoot - a bundle of energy right up until recently. Sorry about your visiting kitty, Dewey.

Opus I hear ya! Sucks when work gets in the way of riding.

Sorry Dewey. Sounds like a tough call.

Good for you OGP!

Pony4me sorry about the vet flunkie. It has been a very long time for you to have him off. I know how much you were looking forward to good news. I know you must feel neglected about the turnout area. The BO must be very busy gearing up for show season. Do you know anyone handy? What if you offered to do the work yourself (with their approval of course). I had to do that last year. We only had fence around 2 sides of our outdoor ring and my son’s horse likes to think up practical jokes when he’s bored. My son wasn’t as strong then and the horse would drag his head to the ground and take off out of the ring whenever he felt like it with my son completely unable to stop him. My husband and a couple of the other dads plus our farrier built the rest of the fence in an afternoon. (that, plus adolescent growth spurt for my son, and a gag bit for the horse put a quick end to that little game!) Would they allow you to put something up yourself?

Had the kitty put to sleep today. I’m so depressed! It was a painful decision but a necessary one. The vet said he was a “strong positive” and had a raging respiratory infection (which I suspected), and even if they had gotten that under control, the cat would have had to be isolated from other cats, which given his history and the fact that we have four other cats was really impossible.

The vet asked me if I wanted to visit him before they put him to sleep, and I am glad that I said yes. I took him out of the carrier and cuddled him for about 25 minutes in one of their examining rooms. I had never even picked him up before. He was covered with battle scars and was filthy, but he was so sweet and affectionate! I had a good cry over him. I so wish he had come by our house before he picked up the virus. He would have made a wonderful pet.

I am going to get the other cats tested just in case though the vet said that he thought they would be OK. They shared a food dish but had almost no other contact since they did not like him.

In other news–I rode Sky today, and her feet are much better. I went to the barn after going to the vet–it helped me feel better.

So sorry Dewey…feel good though that you were there for him…very sweet!

Dewey, that kitty is so lucky to have met you. Imagine his end to life if he was left to his own devices. You did right by him, good karma coming your way. So glad you got to go out and enjoy your new girl!!

Thanks, shelliblue–that is my one comfort.

Thanks to everyone for the sympathy–I do appreciate it.

So sorry about the kitty, Dewey. You did the best you could for him, and he surely appreciated the meals and lovin’.

In answer to somebody’s question (I’m too tired to scroll up and get the correct name, so please forgive me) I talked to the barn owner and the barn manager/assistant trainer today, and they said they would set up a small turnout area tomorrow. I also emailed the vet and asked him to inquire about my horse whenever he’s out there. He gets out there at least once a week, so that should help. Trainer is back from Gulfport, so he’s home for two weeks before going to St. Louis for two weeks, and then Brownland for two weeks. So we have an opportunity to get something in place. I’m just a little ticked that it’s taken so long.

Had a good lesson tonight on a sale pony. Best of all, we got to lesson outside and it was still daylight, and warm at 6pm. They did tell me they found the perfect horse for me, but at $125,000 he’s way too perfect, and I had a good chuckle that they’d even tell me about him. I’m so flattered that they think I’m that affluent. They should know better. Sigh.

Have a nice evening!

My condolences, Dewey. That was a hard decision, but it sounds like you made the right one. Very loving of you.

CVPeg - what methods are they suggesting with your horse? Did they mention anything specific? I once rode at a barn that was very big with the Clinton Anderson techniques and have experience with that, but my own personal belief is to try anything/everything. Each horse is unique and I’ve yet to come across a situation that was identical to another. Maybe see what specific methods or exercises they’re suggesting?

It sounds like people have had a few good rides lately - OneGrayPony, CVPeg, stolen virture (sorry if I forget any names!). I finally got in a lesson on my guy - the first one since my accidents - and it was amazing! Great instructor who really makes things easily understood and helped us put all the pieces together. It was probably the best we’ve looked or felt! I’m so looking forward to the next ride!

Dewey sorry about the kitty… leuk is a horrid thing for kitties… one of my ‘‘heart ktties’’ was pts over it though he was not presenting with the same as the one you had to deal with… still heart renching ((( hugs))) …

Pony for that amount that horse had better learn the course all by itself also… lol its funny when we wold say that to the amount of 15-20k… scary thought and that was not THAT long ago not yet 30yrs…

OTTB yes is it not amazing what an instrctor understands the language you are talking helps? makes lessons and learning so much eaiser, makes them more enjoyable etc… I am glad you’re looking foward to your next lesson. Though Im new here what little I did read it sounded as though you were very frustrated in where your riding was going and with the instruction was going … So it is good that it sounds like maybe it will go in hte direction you need/want it to go.

I dont know enough about c anderson, pp et al to make any comments one way or another other than I will not touch a pp traind horse ever again s have been trampled by enough of them to last a life time ( yes more than 3).

Thanks spacy it really sux being laid up esp with the weather finally turning wonderful…
and with my guy hitting that 4yo age( offically 4 on jan 1 i know but his real bday is mar 30) where I feel comfortble to begin the ''real ‘’ riding… And where I live in qhwp he$% i just can not find anyone to ride him… no one unless I want someone who won at congress 4x’s…and will want 20$ cash an hr… mmmm No… I am looking for an ammie or a Jr who wants to ride a horse and if finances allow possible/maybe show a few shows this summer… heck horse doesnt even have a show name yet…

Sorry to hear about the kitty, Dewey. We were put in a similar situation here at work with a 1-eyed tomcat who was an awesome guy. He’d spend his days chasing down (and killing) the squirrels in the parking lot and was good at it. And he was super sweet to boot. Someone finally decided he needed to be taken to a vet so someone could claim him and his test came back positive. There were other ailments as well, so the vet put him down.

I know it’s probably for the best, but I still miss not seeing him out there, running down the squirrels.

I’m on Day 9 of my work week. :frowning: I should be getting Friday off, but then back to work Sat-Sun-Mon. Then hopefully I’ll get to ride with both trainers when I’m off Tues-Wed-Thurs of next week.

I keep telling Trainer No. 2 that this is not in anyway normal for me at work and that it just happens once a year, sometimes twice if I’m really unlucky. I mean, should she think I’ll be a bad match for her horse because I’m working all the time.

Well the big guy finally got some ace and turnout today! The barn made the round pen smaller, and put out some hay for him. He was just fine! Mostly nibbled the grass and was so happy to be out for that hour. The chiro also was out and paid special attention to his right front leg when he had has adjustment. Next vet visit in three weeks or so, and we’ll see where we are.

Dewey- sorry about the cat, but glad you were able to give him a good, loving end.

Pony- hope your barn co-operates soon and sets up what your horse needs to get better.

Spring has sprung early down south and so allergy season is here for sure. I skipped the barn this weekend to do some badly needed work around the house and then yesterday got absolutely done in with allergies. Finally got them slightly under control but turned myself into a zombie in the process. Got different medicine but was a total mess this AM and had to call and cancel my lesson at the last minute as there was no way I was going to be able to ride. Hopefully the new meds will work and I’ll up to riding tomorrow. Also calling for rain this weekend which should help the pollen but prevent riding. Trade offs…

I’m jealous of everyone who has nice weather and can breathe well enough to ride!

Way to go Pony!! First step in the right direction:)

pony - GREAT news about the turnout! Glad to hear about the positive step! That has to be such a relief to see him get some nice time outside

iechris - I typically get really bad spring allergies, but it feels like we’re skipping spring here. It hit 80 today! It was actually really warm outside and the horses were all sweaty, just standing in their stalls. We were all spending time with the shedding blades, trying to help those winter coats come off!

So, I got on my horse for the second time since my fall on Saturday. We attempted to go on trail with a couple of other boarders. Maybe I was too nervous, I don’t know, but he started prancing and jigging. I told the others I was turning back (we weren’t that far from home, maybe 200-300 yards). I turned him back and made it a few feet before he bolted. I managed to turn him and get him stopped (and didn’t fall off!), but was so shaken that when I got off, I couldn’t help but cry, I was so frustrated and just, well, scared.

In the end, I think I did at least the semi-right thing. I walked him back and took him to our indoor and did several minutes of straight walk-halt-back transitions to get him listening. I untacked him and then let him graze for a minute or two before hand-walking him all the way back down the trail at least 100 yards or so past his “melt-down” spot. I don’t know if that helped, but it was the best I could think of.

Here’s hoping the next ride goes better.
